Chapter 1: The Dark Lane
Our story begins on a rather warm afternoon in a town that, for many reasons, shall remain nameless, as will its whereabouts as I wouldn't want anyone to go off searching for it right this very minute because you wouldn't find it, for reasons that shall be explained. We find Gaia staggering home after her daily beating her normally brilliant red eyes now dull and almost brown. Her hair had dirt all through it which was obvious thanks to the white streak on the left side of her hair which was now a dull brown. Her peers, it seems, had been in a rather foul mood and thus had been much more vicious than normal after our soon-to-be heroine had tried in vain to stick up for herself as no-one else would. I'm sure you all know the feeling of being surrounded by a group of teens intent on beating the living snot out of you, of course at least some of you would have had a friend to lean on at least afterwards, unfortunately for Gaia she was an outcast of the outcasts. Now, I'm sure you're all wondering where the magic in all this is. This is sounding rather depressing and you're thinking of putting the story down because the author won't shut up and get on with it…but my reader…I'm simply giving Gaia enough time to make it to the lane way in which will be the beginning to the magical events which shall soon follow…lane which had no name to speak of, it was just a lane that was over grown with vines and other various plants which caused it to be very dark and perfect for hiding in; Gaia thought it was safe to have a small rest and thus leant on the right wall near the entrance of the lane to catch her breath, she'd have many a bruise from this beating and they'd be hard to explain away. She knew her parents were slightly suspicious of all the injuries she'd been receiving recently but there was nothing she could do just then. She had to wait for the right time. did Gaia know that the right time was quickly approaching as a figure appeared at the other end of the lane. Whomever it was seemed to be hurrying and walked with a purpose toward where Gaia was now leaning against the wall unaware to the stranger who was about to turn her life upside down and inside out."You must come with me! There's no time to explain!" Is what I'd like to say the stranger said to Gaia; but in truth he walked passed her ignoring her completely, Gaia didn't really notice him either though which most wouldn't find odd unless you counted in the fact that the teenage girl we follow was injured and the stranger seemed one to stop and see if someone who seemed injured was alright.
Normally one would wonder why such a thing would occur, why a young man who looked like a nice lad with his blond hair, blue eyes and odd clothes is beyond this writer, unless you consider that this young man could not see Gaia at all and then the same for her, that possibly she could not see him either. If you consider this then it really seems rather reasonable; you could also consider that, as the air was growing thick and the lane and a small area surrounding it was getting darker than normal, and Gaia had still not noticed anything awry somust surmise that she could not see anything wrong with her surroundings.young man that Gaia could not see had stoped but a few paces away from our girl to look around, he seemed slightly lost and there was open concern on his face; this accompanied with the change in at least his surroundings can tell us magic was finally at work, though we cannot expect that any magic that makes a small area darken and the air get thicker to be much good at all. decided she'd better get home or else she'd be in 'big doo-doo' as her mother often said, so she straightened up and picked up the bag she'd dropped onto the ground when she'd stoped to rest; this small movement made a wave in the young man's reality, and he turned to find a girl with long black hair with a white streak on the left side and strange red coloured eyes blinking rapidly, confusion rampant on her face which mirrored his own.He swiftly moved into what looked like an attack position, Gaia, still tired from her previous beating didn't move, in her eyes, if he was going to attack he may as well get it over with. When he didn’t move she grew impatient. “Well? Are you going to or not?" She asked in a tired yet agitated tone which seemed to take him by surprise as his stance softened ever so slightly, his eyes were narrowed and it seemed he was waiting for her to make the first move. This was laughable, there was in no way that Gaia Neptune Solaria would attack someone with no real provocation, she was not like the other teens in her school and she refused point blank to stoop to their level. She rolled her eyes and began turning away from him to start heading home and I would sincerely like to say she made it there and lived happily ever after, unfortunately I cannot as it was at that moment that a large black creature seemed to fall out of the sky and landed in Gaia's way. our very tired and agitated heroine, did not move as the creature roared so deafeningly and unexpectedly that it probably would have made a grown man and an elephant soil themselves and run away crying to their mothers, which probably would have been a very sensible thing to do given the circumstances. When the creature of unknown origins and name had finished its rather loud introduction, Gaia, who was feeling a sarcastic mood coming on, waved the air in front of her nose in an attempt to lessen the bad breath she'd just copped as she was standing right in front of it. She also straightened her hair which had been blown about by the force of the roar."Ever hear of breath mints? Or maybe mouthwash?" She asked it in a monotone, a small frown evident on her face. Now, as this was going on the young man who is still nameless at this point was gaping at Gaia who apparently did not know what danger she was getting into at all as she glared up at a monster that could most probably rip her limb from scrawny limb. She wasn't exactly chubby, which was one of the many reasons the girls at her school did not like her.creature blinked stupidly and proved that it wasn't much of a thinker or did not understand whichever of the many languages there are in this world she was speaking; the boy finally spoke."It hears you but does not see you…" He said in a voice that in a few years would become very deep and smooth as silk…but at the moment still had a fair amount of boyishness in it. Gaia looked over to him and raised an eyebrow. For some reason she was feeling much more confidant than usual and I must say that I blame it on the high intensity of magic around her which most likely caused her to do what she did next. She turned back to the large beast smirking as she did."So you can't see me, big, dumb and ugly? What a shame…oh well…guess you won't mind if I release some tension that’s been building up in here…" She said slowly putting a hand to her heart as she spoke, she knew the boy behind her was watching her carefully though she didn't know why, all she really knew was that she felt very strong right then and she was now in a bad mood and wanted to vent, why not on the monster in front of her? It was most likely hoping to eat her or something awful to that effect, thus, without any warning at all, she punched the creature quite hard forcing it backward several feet. "Huh…." She said watching the thing struggle to get up, for some reason she wasn't surprised or shocked by her own strength as would a normal teenage girl if she punched a large creature and caused it to fly backward several feet. In fact Gaia Neptune Solaria laughed, quite heartily at her deed; which as you may be aware is not really a very good sign considering the circumstances. The boy noticed this at once, it was what he'd been looking for in this town, why he was there in the first place and it was why the creature was there. For her.He walked over to Gaia carefully, not wanting to cause her to turn on him and attack him without warning; he touched her shoulder lightly and she turned to show him her now completely black eyes, they held no light at all and the sight of it made him flinch slightly.
"You must calm down or the darkness will take over your body and you'll end up like that thing…" He said seriously and pointed to the creature still attempting to get up; this seemed to get through to her as she wobbled and held her head, the scene that followed was not a pleasant one so I shall spare you the details but I will say that Gaia would have liked a bucket at that particular moment.
After that unpleasantness Gaia's eyes had returned to normal and there was now a blob of nasty black goo on the ground between the two teens. There was the creature to be dealt with as well. It was doubtful that Gaia's strength had endured after the black goo had been…well you get the picture…thus it was up to the young man to save them both from certain death and, well, Gaia had her doubts he would be much help as did I until I saw the next scene.young man pulled out a small round device from his pocket and pressed a button to activate a crystal sword that shone even in the darkness that was slowly growing stronger; he quickly ran at the creature and jumped into the air bringing his sword above his head, as he began falling he swung it down with an incredible force. He cut the creature in two before immediately backing off. As he did the creature seemed to heal itself, sliding back together. The young man swore under his breath, it didn't really look very good at this point reader and Gaia was getting very worried; no matter how bad her life was, she didn't want to die just yet, she had things to do. And she hadn't yet got the teens in her school back, this, above all things was something she needed to live for.
A glow came from her chest and spread outward enveloping her completely. The next thing Gaia knew she was wearing something…different. She now wore a white non-sleeved top with a light blue belt around it, under the belt a pink lace like fabric showed from her top. Then there was a slightly darker shade of blue for her skirt and white boots, the belt was longer than a normal one as it tied at the back and then hung down reaching to her ankles. She also had white fingerless long gloves on which had a wing motif on the top of each. looked herself over in disbelief."What on earth!?" She said bewildered. A roar from the creature brought her back to the present; she looked from the young man who was now staring at her and the creature that was now looking right at her, she knew, as did I reader, that the creature could now see her quite clearly. Gaia took a step back as the creature appeared to grin horribly, it was the kind of insane grin murderer's in movies get before they kill a character off, but don't worry Gaia wasn't going anywhere just yet."I think I better take over from here Gaia…" Said a vaguely familiar voice inside Gaia's head, do not ask me how I know this, for now I can not tell you, perhaps later you will figure it out on your own or perhaps when it is revealed. Gaia felt a strange feeling come over her and then she was no longer in control of her own body, her eyes opened and instead of red they were now a bright purple. As soon as the young man saw this he seemed openly relieved and smiled at the girl now standing in for our dear confused heroin."My lady! You must use the light magic!" The young man said suddenly as the creature began charging at the two of them, the purple eyed girl nodded silently."You'd best get behind me then…" She said softly enough for him to just barely hear, he nodded and ran behind her as she raised her left arm slowly. The creature was coming very close by now and a small light was slowly gathering strength in the palm of her hand which was reaching to the heavens. I must tell you all that I was very nervous at this point, though if you'd actually seen me yourselves…you wouldn't have known it at all.
At the very last minute the girl pointed her now large ball of light directly at the creature which was pouncing at herself and the young man behind her, the ball of light became a beam and hit the creature dead on causing it to explode and emit a strange gas, as it slowly dispersed so did the darkness that had been enveloping the small area surrounding the lane."Please…don't scare her with a big explanation just yet, you need to get her out of here before They send more…" The girl said to the young man over her shoulder. He nodded understanding her reasoning, the girl then closed her eyes and fell backward into the young mans arms. When Gaia opened her eyes she was sitting on the ground being held by the young man, he'd been watching her worriedly and now smiled in relief that she was ok."What…what just happened?!" Gaia said in disbelief, this afternoon was shaping up much like one in a book she'd recently read…the boy grinned impishly at her."Well…" He began helping her up, "I just found the Light Mage…and helped her fight a government shadow soul." He told her triumphantly and puffed out his chest with his hands on his hips in an attempt to look important. Gaia didn't buy it, nor did she know what he was talking about."Uh…Light Mage? Government Shadow Soul? What are you on?" She asked bemused and shook her head, she was feeling much better and her head was clearer than it had been in a while."I'm not on anything! You're the Light Mage and THAT," he pointed to where the creature had been, "was a Government Shadow Soul!" He said insistently; Gaia laughed at him, thinking that he was crazy and deluded. To her Light Mage said two things, powerful and pure; and she was neither of these things."Yeah, sure…" She said waving him off and shouldered her bag which had fallen to the ground nearby. "Whoever you are, thanks for the rescue and all…but I'm not in the market for a ticket to crazy land…" She told him and began walking away shaking her head as she went.that moment a large dragon could be seen in the sky by those with mage-sight or the ability to see such creatures; it was a large bronze mountain dragon from, by the size and wing design, somewhere in Western Europe. It landed near-by and Gaia, having never seen a dragon up close and personal before was immediately interested. The young man smirked at this; he'd known that she would be."Wanna go for a ride?" he asked her holding out a hand, still smirking but there was a smile in it too. Gaia looked from the boy to the dragon unsure of what to do."I don't normally go for ride with people that I don't know…" She said to give him a hint; he laughed and nodded agreeing with her terms."I'm Rai…" He said bowing politely which made Gaia giggle slightly, it isn't often that she does this, reader, so Rai should have felt very proud, unfortunately he did not know this…thus didn't."I'm Gaia…" She told him holding out a hand to shake it which he did before quickly rushing her over to the dragon and helping her on. Before Gaia knew it she was on the back of a bronze mountain dragon that was flying effortlessly over the clouds. "The reason I just did that…is 'cause I needed to get you away from there before They send more…" Rai said into her ear as he was sitting behind her, Gaia turned slightly to look at him; the look on his face was deadly serious which made her realise one very sad thing, she wouldn't be going home for sometime…"Who…ARE you…?" Gaia asked bewildered as the full events sank into her properly, it was almost unbelievable. Almost. Rai smiled mysteriously at her."Just someone who's been looking for you for a long time…" He said his words were almost as enigmatic as his smile had been; it frustrated Gaia that she couldn't get a proper answer out of him, but she'd have to deal with it. And she did, quite simply really. She thumped the top of his head with her fist. This did cause some grumbling on Rai's part but with a simple threat to thump him again looming over him he kept his peace."Ok, where are we going?" She tried again to get answers out of him, but he just gave her the same mysterious smile."Somewhere safe." Was all he told her as the dragon flew towards a large cloud in the distance…And so my dear reader, we will leave these two adventurers till the next time that we meet, I am sure to have the next part all ready so never fear…Hikari Mahoo
