[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
“ Father Andrew, look a child!” I heard a woman’s voice, but I didn’t understand what she was saying.
I opened my eyes when I felt her warm hand on my forehead. She was beautiful, with kind purple eyes, and golden hair. She looked like she was in her early 20s, and looked worried. Worried about me, but why? Why did she even care for me?
“ Sister Eva, stay away from him! He’s a demon!!” The guy Father Andrew pulled her away from me, and held her close. Father Andrew looked middle aged; his black eyes were cold and cruel as he glared at me like I was truly some evil think. But was I evil like?
Sister Eva pulled away for him, and growled. “ Father Andrew!! He is just a boy, he is not demon!!” She shouted at him.
As they yelled at each other, I took the time to look around. I noticed that the cold hard steps I was sitting on where in front of a church, but I don’t remember how I got here or even falling asleep. As a matter of fact I didn’t remember anything of my parents. I tried thinking of what my name was, but I didn’t remember. Why couldn’t I remember?
I clung to the stuffed kitten I had been holding the whole time, I remember a little. This stuffed kitten was my one and only friend.
I started to cry, holding my kitty tightly to my chest. I couldn’t stop. I was so scared. Scared of the man named Father Andrew. I didn’t know if he was going to hurt me, but Sister Eva seemed to be stopping him from doing so.
Father Andrew calmed looking at me with less cruelly then before. “ I’ll go tell Mother Laura that we have a guest.”
“ Thank you Father Andrew!!” Sister Eva said with a big bright smile, which made me feel warm and safe with her around.
As Father Andrew walk away, Sister Eva looked down at me with a smile. I looked at her curiously, giving her a weak smile.
“ What is your name little one?” She asked, but I didn’t understand what she was asking. Plus I didn’t know my name, if that is what she was asking me.
I looked down at my kitty sadly. That’s when I saw the tag around his neck. My kitty’s tag said ‘ Belongs to Liebe’. That’s my name! I know my name! My name was Liebe!
“ Hello? Little one, what is your name?” Sister Eva asked once again, but I didn’t care if I didn’t understand. I knew my name, and I had to tell someone.
“ Liebe! My name is Liebe!” I shouted happily. Hugging her tightly along with my kitty.
She smiled at me, and giggled. “ So Liebe, you speak German?” She said to me and I understood her. She knew my language!
“ Yes! Yes! You understand me!” I was so overwhelmed that I was jumping for joy. I was so happy that she could understand me.
“ Calm down, Liebe.” She laughed as I gave her a hug, cling to her legs. “ My name is Sister Eva.” She said ruffling my hair.
“ Sister?” I blinked. “ Why add sister?”
“ Because I’m a nun, and I’m god’s child, making me everyone’s sister.” She took my small hand in hers.
“ Oh! So that guy Andrew must really be Father Andrew?” I was starting to get it. Though it was still a little odd to me that someone would put sister or father in front of their name.
“ Yes, and I’m sorry about him. I think he believes everyone is a demon.” Sister Eva sighed as she led me into the church. “ Anyways, how old are you, Liebe?”
“ Um……I think 5.” I said. I wasn’t all that sure about my age, let alone my name.
“ You think?” She looked at me with a questioning look.
“ I don’t remember who I am, let alone my age. All I know is my name and that I’m different for some reason. Don’t tell anyone that please.” I begged squeezing her hand tightly, pleading with my eyes.
“ Your secret is safe with me, Liebe.” She smiled at me, with her hand on the doorknob of a room. I hadn’t noticed that we had got that far, but we were on the second floor now. I looked out one of the over sized glass windows to check.
“ I-is that Laura person nice?” I asked, my little body starting to shake. I had heard the name and wonder if that was the person who was behind the door; hoping that she wasn’t like Father Andrew.
“ Mother Laura? She’s the greatest Liebe. There is no reason to be scared. I won’t let any harm come to you, and neither will Mother Laura.” She opened the door and air swooshed over my face. It smelled of roses.
“ Come in Sister Eva, and bring our little guest.” Mother Laura spoke softly in a beautiful voice.
Sister Eva and I walked into the well-lit room that had roses in beautifully made crystal vases everywhere. In the middle of the room was a desk with two crosses on either end. There were crosses on the walls too. I’ve never seen so many in my life.
“ You must be out little guest?” A woman in her 40s bent down to my eye level, speaking in a language I didn’t understand, so I looked at Sister Eva.
“ Mother Laura, Liebe here doesn’t speak English. He only speaks German.” Sister Eva smiled kindly.
“ Oh I see.” Mother Laura returned the smile, and then turned that kind smile my way, playfully ruffling my hair. “ Is this better, Liebe?” She spoke German for me.
“ Yes, Mother Laura. Thank you!” I smiled at her. She was just as nice as Sister Eva; I liked her.
“ What a sweet boy you are! I just love your red hair too!!” She gave me a big bear hug. She squeezed me to the point I thought my insides were going to be squeezed out of me.
“ Mother Laura, please.” Sister Eva giggled; she must have seen my face turn red, then blue.
“ Oh sorry.” Mother Laura let me go, and sat behind her desk. “ Liebe, where are you from and where are your parents?” She turned serious.
“ Germany, and I…I don’t know.” I whispered holding my kitty close to my chest, and squeezed Sister Eva’s hand tightly to the point in hurt her.
“ Ow Liebe!” Sister Eva pulled her hand from mine, and rubbed it to ease the pain.
“ I’m so sorry, Sister Eva. I’m just so nervous with some many new people, plus Father Andrew thinking I’m a demon.” I whimpered holding my kitty even tighter and backed away.
“ You are scared?” I heard Mother Laura ask me.
“ Yes, very much.” I looked at her with sad eyes. I wondered if she understood why I would be so scared.
“ Don’t worry about Father Andrew, Liebe. Sometimes we all wonder about his health. What with him accusing everyone of being a demon at some point or another.” Mother Laura assured me, trying so hard to speak lightly of the man who so wrongly accused me, but then again he could be right. I just wasn’t going to admit that out loud.
“ Oh, okay. I trust you and Sister Eva.” I smiled as kindly as I could through the fear of me possibly being the demon I was accused of being and of Father Andrew. I wonder what he would do to me if that were true.
“ I am glad of that, Liebe. Well, I shall tell the others of your arrival, and if possible speak German when you are around as Sister Eva and I do. Are you hungry, Liebe?” Mother Laura asked me.
“ No, just tired is all.” I yawned. “ Excuse me.”
“ It is fine. Come I’ll show you to your room. Sister Evra, please get some blankets for Liebe.”
“ Yes, Mother Laura.” Sister Eva rushed to get what Mother Laura had asked her to get. Though I didn’t want her to leave my side just in case of Father Andrew were to see me.
Mother Laura led me up stairs and through many hallways. I knew I’d never remember them all, so I really didn’t bother to pay attention. I did pay attention to the things around me. There were many crosses and pictures of Christ, and of the Last Supper. But I didn’t see many pictures of Mary, she did appear in the Last Supper, but that was about it. I thought it was a little unfair, but this wasn’t my church to run or decorate.
Though I have to give the housekeeper credit. They keep this place well painted and clean. I’d thought of a church with dusty everywhere and cracked walls that were in a bad need of a paint job, and not to mention the creepy creaking stairs. But this church was so beautiful and not dusty!
Even if there was a crazy old priest, who isn’t right in the head accusing me of being a demon, I was going to like it here.
“ Here we are, Liebe. The bed is a little big though.” She opened the door and pointed to the huge, four post canopy bed that looked like 5 people could sleep in it.
“ Oh my……sorry” I looked at Mother Laura with a very sorry look. I was going to say God, but I was in a church and if I was going to live here I was going to have to respect the Lord like everyone else here.
“ It’s alright. You are still young. You’ll learn in time. Sister Eva still slips up.” She smiled, showing me around my new room. My closet was fill with clothing, chest full of toys that was at the foot of my bed, a bookshelf full of books, and a dresser with everything else I might need. It was wonderful, this room, everything! Even though the hard wood floor was cold against the bottoms of my bare feet.
I couldn’t stop the impulse that every child has when they see a huge, comfy, well-made bed. I just couldn’t hold it back any longer as I ran and leaped onto my new bed and jumped on it, laughing happily.
The only thing that stopped my jumping was my falling to the floor, not noticing that my foot had been wrapped around the sheets of the bed. I hit the floor with a loud and heavy thud, and it hurt like hell; but like all kids I picked myself up and laughed, waning to do it again.
“ Are you okay, Liebe?!” Mother Laura brushed me off, looking so concerned as she looked over me, making sure I had not major injuries.
“ Yes, Mother Laura, I am fine.” I smiled sweetly at her, showing her that I was 100% okay.
She let out a sigh of relief. I guess I scared her more than I thought I had. Poor Mother Laura.
“ Please be careful, Liebe. I don’t need or want you getting hurt.” She said as she picked me up and sat me on the bed.
“ Sorry, I didn’t mean to make you worry so much.” I pouted, hoping that she wasn’t upset with me. “ Kitty’s sorry too. He didn’t mean to cause trouble either.”
“ I know, and it’s okay. I’m not mad. I remember what it’s like to be your age.” She gave a soft laughing, ruffling my hair. “ Now you need to get some sleep okay?”
I went to say ‘ okay’ and crawl under the sheets, knowing that I’ll just have to wait for the blankets, when Father Andrew burst in my room shouting. “ That demon shall not sleep!!”
I opened my eyes when I felt her warm hand on my forehead. She was beautiful, with kind purple eyes, and golden hair. She looked like she was in her early 20s, and looked worried. Worried about me, but why? Why did she even care for me?
