Chapter Three

When the instruments were tuned the director announced their piece again and the second violin player, Sharice stood frowning. She was a small girl, only five feet in height with sable brown hair that hung free to her shoulders framing a fair skinned face. The eyes that were narrowed in disbelief were framed with short sable lashes and were a fresh green.
“There’s no flute in that piece,” she said confidently, “how can a flute player join in.”
“Well it wasn’t easy to write me in,” Kinmitsu said laughing at the class in general. “Fortunately when Kinmune and I were fifteen and Akira was seven we worked together with our dad who is a great violin player to find a way to write it in. It took a few months but we got it. Hopefully my lungs still have the capacity to keep up because since I’m the only one using air it’s not an easy flute piece. We’ll warm up and then you can tell us what you think of our creation.” Sharice sat down still unconvinced but she listened as Akira and his brothers warmed up with Kinmune on the piano leading his brothers. They flowed through the warm up easily, before they stopped and Kinmune began the Devil’s Trill. Akira joined almost immediately and after a couple notes Kinmitsu joined in as well even playing the vibratos along with Akira as Kinmune improvised flawlessly. They moved through the piece easily and Akira and Kinmitsu ended move with the harder pieces of the Trill in vibrato while Kinmune finished it normally. Everyone clapped enthusiastically while they bowed and the director even asked that they play the tune at the graduation for the older students. After they’d agreed the band disbanded for the last twenty minutes of practice so that the students and their families could mingle. When band class was done Akira and his brothers left the building making their way across campus toward the gym. When they got there they went into the bathroom changing into their karate uniforms each tying on their black belts when they stepped out of the stall.
“When did you make black belt?” Kinmune asked as he and his brothers wrapped their hands.
“Just a couple months ago,” Akira said grinning, “I’m only a first degree though but I’m still a good fighter.”
“You’d better be because it’ll be two on one and we won’t go easy on you just because you’re our little brother,” Kinmitsu said.
“If you did I wouldn’t learn anything,” Akira said smiling as they walked out and into the dojo. The sensei didn’t waste time as usual explaining today they would fight with the family members who had agreed come if they liked or they could challenge another student. The minute class started Akira found himself being challenged by another student. They moved through several styles starting from taekwondo, then moving into jujitsu, and finally into kendo before moving back into taekwondo again. They moved around the dojo floor smoothly with Akira allowing the student to attack while only defending. After five minutes of this Akira moved in for the attack using a fake punch to draw his opponents hands up to guard his face. He used the unguarded seconds to land a powerful kick to his opponents stomach winding him and knocking him to the ground on his back. When the instructor called the match Akira walked up to his opponent and reached out a hand smiling. “Good match,” he said as he helped the other opponent to his feet.
“Yeah thanks,” the other guy said, “it looks like I need a little more practice though.”
“Don’t feel bad,” Akira said laughing, “when I fight my brothers it’ll be my turn to lie on the floor.” They laughed as they walked to the side while the next group of fighters began their match. When it was time for him to fight his brothers Akira walked up to the front of the class with them. They bowed to each other with Akira standing on the right and his brothers on the left. The minute they straightened the match began. His brothers rushed at him from both sides and he brought up his arms to block Kinmitsu’s fist to his face and Kinmune’s kick to his stomach. He felt the hits reverberate through his arms but fought back the pain and pushed them back. When they came at him again he jumped up over Kinmune’s kick and punched him in the face while completely dodging the fist that would have caught him in the stomach from Kinmitsu. Backing up Akira jumped back into his stance while his brothers did the same. He allowed himself a small smile as Kinmune wiped blood from the corner of his mouth where the hit had connected. Akira ran at them this time attacking Kinmune and blocking Kinmitsu’s hits. He left his stomach unguarded for a second which couldn’t be helped but Kinmune took advantage of the weakness and hit him full in the stomach with both fists. This winded Akira enough to where he doubled over giving Kinmitsu the chance to elbow him hard in the back and send him sprawling face first onto the wooden floor. When the instructor called the match over Akira allowed his brothers to help him to his feet wiping at the blood on his mouth while coughing roughly from the punch to his gut. “Man I got a lot of work to do,” he said grinning up at his brothers.
“You did pretty good,” Kinmune said smiling as he and Kinmitsu helped Akira walk to where they had been sitting earlier.
“How,” Akira said arching a brow.
“Well no one’s ever landed a blow on Kinmune before,” Kinmitsu said grinning.
“And no one’s ever avoided all of Kinmitsu’s hits before either.” Akira grinned at his brothers.
“Well at least I know I’m getting better,” he said as they watched the last few matches. When the class was over they went back to the bathroom and changed clothes before making their way back to Akira’s dorm at nine forty-five. While his brothers got their stuff together he grabbed some fresh clothes to change into and stripped off his shirt to see the still tender bruise that was blooming across his stomach. “Damn Mune-Kun did you have to hit me so hard?” Akira asked touching the ache gently. “And you too Mitsu-Kun,” he said trying to shake off the ache in his back.
“Well we did say we wouldn’t go easy on you,” Kinmune said laughing, “and besides what about the blow to my jaw.”
“Looks like I’m the only one who got out of this unscathed,” Kinmitsu said grinning broadly.
“Oh yeah,” Akira said winking at Kinmune as Kinmitsu pretended to polish his nails on his shirt. “Get him,” Akira whooped as he and Kinmune charged at their brother. They wrestled him to the ground tickling him mercilessly. Kinmitsu let out big, booming laughs as he tried to get away from his brothers but a knock on the door halted the fun. Grunting Akira hauled his still sore body up off the floor and his brothers sat up properly while he went to the door and answered. “Myoji-San,” Akira said surprised turning around to find that his alarm clock read ten o’clock on the dot.
“Hey Takahashi-Kun we still on for tonight?” Ichiro asked arching a brow at the scene that was set before him. Akira, Kinmune, and Kinmitsu all looked rough with their hair tangled wildly around their heads. There was a bandage on Kinmune’s left cheek and Akira was black and blue on his back and stomach, and Kinmitsu’s shirt was ripped from where he had struggled against his brothers. “I could come back later if you’re busy,” Ichiro said as Akira’s brothers got to their feet slowly.
“No need we have to get going anyway,” Kinmune said as he and Kinmitsu grabbed their bags noting the books in Ichiro’s hands.
“Sorry about this guys but duty calls,” Akira said rubbing a hand over his bare stomach gently. “He’s got Rullsvien,” Akira said knowing his brothers had gone to the college before him.”
“Bad luck,” Kinmune said shaking his head at Ichiro. “Oh we’re his older twin brothers by the way,” he said remembering his manners. “I’m Takahashi, Kinmune and this is my twin Takahashi, Kinmitsu.” Akira’s brothers bowed before straightening up.
“I’m pleased to meet you Takahashi-San and Takahashi-San,” Ichiro said bowing, “my name is Myoji, Ichiro.”
“Wait a minute the Myoji, Ichiro, the one who won last years junior karate title?” Kinmune asked grinning.
“Uh yeah,” Ichiro mumbled blushing.
“That was some great foot work,” Kinmitsu said clapping Ichiro on the shoulder, “ I didn’t know you were friends with Aki-Kun.”
“No, no I mean Takahashi-Kun is just helping me with my studies,” Ichiro said blushing. “But you two you’re Team Mune-Miitsu right the ones who’ve held the adult championship for three years running right?”
“That’s us,” Kinmitsu said as he and Kinmune grinned happily.
“But we mustn’t forget Aki-Kun’s accomplishments either,” Kinmune began.
“Actually he’s the one who took the highschool title right?” Ichiro asked. When everyone looked at him he grinned a little more relaxed. “I like to keep up with new talent since we’ll probably go up against each other sooner or later. Besides it was announced he was your teams younger brother so I wanted to see what he could do. I was thoroughly impressed.”
“So were we,” Akira said grinning at Ichiro, “you fight beautifully. I believe the announcer called it a dangerously beautiful dance.”
“Yes well he said the same thing about you and your brothers fighting styles too,” Ichiro pointed out.
“Hey why don’t you guys order a couple pizzas and talk a bit,” Akira said grinning, “then I can go clean up. You guys better save me some pizza too,” he called out as he gathered up his shower things and left the room. When he came back hour later shirtless and clean he found his room completely deserted. Sighing he put his clothes up and left his door unlocked pulling the towel off his hair and drying it roughly. Where were they he wondered noticing his brothers bags were gone but that Ichiro’s book and tablet were on his bed along with a half eaten box of pizza. He helped himself to a slice of pizza and because his mother’s voice rang in his head about his poor appetite he ate another. Grabbing a soda from the refrigerator under his bed he noticed that three others were missing and figured that everyone had ate and Ichiro had probably drove his brothers to the hospital. Figuring Ichiro would be back he began stretching his slenderly muscled body to get the aches out that were put there by his older brothers wondering why they hadn’t at least waited to say good bye. Oh well he thought feeling a little better. Akira laid across his bed falling asleep almost instantly, which was how Ichiro found him when he came back. Akira was still sprawled across his bed and his hair covered his back in a soft, silky curtain. The crescent moon of his platinum lashes on his right cheek complimented his creamy, caramel complexion and the hand that curled by his mouth made him seem delicate. Ichiro blinked looking at him, surprised that he found him so beautiful. He stayed with his back to the closed door calling out softly.
“Takahashi-Kun, wake up,” he said. Akira stired hearing his name and he sat up groaning from the pain of sleeping on his bruises. His hand went to his stomach as he looked around to find Ichiro standing by the door with a pained smile on his face.
“Myoji-Kun,” he said yawning and looking around dazed. Rubbing a hand over his eyes he pushed back his hair out of habit and grinned at Ichiro in an impishly boyish manner that only made him seem more beautiful. “Sorry I fell asleep,” Akira said shrugging lightly.
“Its ok,” Ichiro said smiling, “it was a long day and from the look of those bruises you seem to have gotten the worst of it.” Akira looked down to see the black and blue mark blossoming on his stomach then grinned again.
“Its nothing,” he said lightly, “when I was first learning karate I looked much worse. Anyway do you still want to study tonight?”
“Sure,” Ichiro said making his way slowly toward the bed. Akira grabbed the science book and moved over to give Ichiro room to sit down. The older man sat down beside him busying himself by opening up his notebook and digging a pencil out of the bag he brought with him. When he turned back to look at Akira the younger man was tying his hair up in a bun while reading the table of contents in the book.
“Ok so what chapter are you guys on?” Akira said stifling another yawn.
“Chapter seven,” Ichiro said staring at him. When Akira noticed the look in Ichiro’s eyes he frowned confused.
“Are you alright?” He asked self-consciously wondering if there was a mark on his face that he hadn’t noticed in the bathroom mirror.
“I’m fine,” Ichiro lied feeling uncomfortable, “I was just admiring the family resemblance in you and your brothers and the bruise on your left cheek near your nose.”
“Oh that,” Akira said shrugging, making the movement gentle and almost sensual. “Its no big deal being more beautiful than handsome,” he said laughing, “but sometimes it sucks because I get confused for being a girl. I’d gain more muscle but I’ve tried and failed a lot. My mom said it’s because I don’t eat enough,” he said indicating the pizza box which still contained three pieces. “It’s not that I don’t want to eat it’s just that I get full really fast. But I’ve come to grips with it so its ok if you think I look beautiful, I think your handsome after all.”
“Well you are beautiful,” Ichiro said smiling politely, “and thank you for the complement.” Akira nodded as he turned to chapter seven.
“So do you have a girlfriend?” Akira asked as Ichiro wrote down the title of the chapter in his notebook.
“We broke up about a month ago,” Ichiro said shrugging, “she dumped me for my older cousin who’s a senior here.”
“Tough luck,” Akira said as he read through the chapter introduction, “but at least you’ve had a girlfriend.”
“You mean you’ve never had a girlfriend?” Ichiro asked in surprise.
“Only if you count this girl in second grade,” he said laughing, “but other than that no. Most girls tell me that they don’t want to date a guy who’s either more beautiful than them or is considered beautiful period. It sucks but then that’s life I guess.”
“And I thought I had it bad,” Ichiro said grinning, “at least girls still hit on me.”
“Better girls than guys,” Akira said laughing though it sounded slightly bitter. “When I first came to school the counselors thought they’d put me in the wrong dorm and then when I was moving a lot of the guys got happy thinking that the school had finally made a co-ed dorm.”
“Oh yeah I remember that,” Ichiro said laughing, “you caused quite a ruckus in the varsity karate division let me tell you. My team partner actually lives a couple rooms away from you and when he said they were getting a female student in the boys dorm everybody was over here everyday until it was found out you were a guy. I was dating my girlfriend at the time and we had a ball making fun of them for mistaking a guy for a girl. I can see I was wrong now though,” Ichiro said shrugging roughly, “you could actually pass for a girl if you wanted to.”
“Oh yeah that makes me feel a lot better,” Akira said sarcastically causing Ichiro to laugh again.
“Oh come on what’s the big deal,” Ichiro said shrugging, “I mean at least you’re not ugly or geeky looking. Then you’d have a right to complain,” he pointed out.
“Well while that’s true,” Akira said smirking, “I still have a right to complain since ugly and geeky guys tease me too. Though its better than having them hit on me. Since I get good grades in school it seemed to bring them to my door in droves until they found out I was a guy.” They both laughed at that thought for a moment before getting down to work on the chapter named The Laws of Attraction. By the time they were willing to call it quits it was six in the morning and Ichiro had several pages of notes on the seventh chapter as well as the eighth and ninth. Akira gave the older man his top two blankets and a pillow so that he could make a pallet on the floor and he slept with a sheet. Akira woke up to banging on his door and climbed carefully over Ichiro to answer it. Several tall men stood outside looking down at him taking in the scene of Ichiro sleeping on the floor and books scattered beside him. The bun had partly unraveled so that some of Akira’s hair fell over his shoulder to his mid-chest. He swept the hair back with a flick of his wrist looking up at the men confused. “Can I help you?” He asked in a soft voice that had the men’s gazes roaming over his body taking in the bruise and the fact that he was a guy.
“Yeah is Ichiro here?” The one in front asked.
“He’s sleeping right there,” Akira said softly again clearing his throat though it did nothing for the fact that he’d lectured for almost six hours straight.
“What were you guys up to?” One of the men almost out or Akira’s line of sight asked suggestively.
“I’m tutoring him for Mrs. Rullsvien’s class,” Akira said wishing his voice wasn’t so hoarse so that it would sound more intimidating.
“Advanced biology,” another said though he wasn’t visible to Akira.
“Yeah,” Akira nodded, “my older brothers were here so we got started a little later than expected so Myoji-San slept here.”
“You’re Japanese aren’t you?” The man in front asked staring down at him curiously.
“Yes,” Akira said arching a brow at him.
“Strange hair and eyes for a Japanese,” he said arching his own brow, “and the bone structure too.”
“My mother is half westerner,” Akira said shrugging in that almost sensual way of his. “Anyway I can wake Myoji-San up for you if you like,” Akira offered hoping if he could get rid of them quickly he could get back to sleep.”
“What happened to your chest and face?” The man in front asked curiously ignoring Akira’s offer.
“Him and his brothers fought in karate class yesterday and since their black belts of the third-degree he got the worst end of the fight,” Ichiro said standing up from where he’d slept on the floor. Akira turned as he stretched with his arms up and his fingers reaching for the ceiling before he walked over to the group by the door. Leaning against the wall behind Akira because the doorway was so small Ichiro looked at the man in front since they were the same height and frowned.
“What are you doing here Katsero-Kun?” Ichiro asked lightly though the look in his eyes didn’t match his tone.
“I’m still an upperclassman even if I am your cousin,” Katsero said. Surprised Akira looked back up at the older man searching between him and Ichiro before seeing the family resemblance. The man outside his door was as aggressively handsome and the same height as Ichiro with the same black hair and eyes. He was surprised he’d missed the resemblance before though it was clear that Ichiro’s features were just a tiny bit more sensual than the man he’d called Katsero-Kun. This must have been the cousin that had taken his girlfriend Akira thought before deciding seconds later that this wasn’t any of his business and stepped back to let Ichiro get closer to the door. Leaving the men to fight it out hopefully with just words Ichiro laid back down in his bed watching them for a moment before rolling over and closing both his eyes and his ears to the fight that was going on just inside his door. He heard a few of the doors near his room open and close as a few people came out to investigate the noise before he slipped into a light sleep. What seemed like hours later but was really only minutes he felt something fall on top of his back and grunted in pain as the person hit his bruise and then used his ass as leverage to stand up. Opening his eyes he leapt out of bed landing almost catlike on the floor as he took in the scene. Ichiro who was likely the one that had landed on him stood close to the bed and the man he’d called Katsero was standing in the room now with another man from outside. The rest of the men that had come with him were guarding the doors so that no one else could get in. Akira stood up straighter addressing Katsero angrily even though his voice was still soft.
“What the hell is going on here?” Akira demanded his eyes darkening to violet in his anger, “you can’t just come in here and start fighting in my place.” He opened his mouth to say more but the man that stood beside Katsero swung at him and he brought up his arm easily to defend against the blow. Akira brushed the man’s fist aside easily gaging his strength before he leapt back a bit and into a basic fighting stance. Ichiro fell into a stance as well and together they began battling his cousin and his friend. This is ridiculous,” Akira thought defending himself easily as they backed the men up slowly and forced them into their friends and out the door. Campus police were waiting there and took Katsero and his friend as well as the men around the door into custody immediately. To Akira they gave a slip that directed him and Ichiro to the Dean’s office. Sighing Akira walked to his dresser grabbing a t-shirt and some socks before pulling Them on along with his shoes. Once he’d made his bed he and Ichiro made their way to the Dean’s office while he worried about getting kicked out of school. They were shown in by the secretary almost as soon as they got in the door and sat down in front of the large oak desk. Akira figured it was only Ichiro’s first offense so he decided to worry about his own skin for the moment. The Dean looked up from typing on his computer his eyes moving disapprovingly from one of them to the other.
“Well, well the two biggest troublemakers in school in trouble at the same time,” he said sighing. Akira and Ichiro looked at each other in surprise before looking back at the Dean and trying to plead their case. “Look boys I understand the situation,” the Dean said holding up his hands to silence them, “but I think its time to face facts. This is the third time I’ve seen both of you in my office this semester and while it’s never your faults something has got to be done about this. Now your grades are good, your club activities are exceptional, and you try your best to get along but I more than anybody understand that you can’t please everybody. So here’s the deal,” he said looking at both of them through narrowed eyes, “there’s a two bedroom apartment just off the west side of campus kept for students who can make the rent or have extenuating circumstances like the two of you. Since the circumstances are what they are you can both live their rent free but you will have to pay for the lights, gas, phone, cable, and of course food and anything else you feel you’ll need if you want it. There’s a pool in the back yard, a nice sized kitchen, two bathrooms, and a game room basement complete with pool table. It used to be my sons while he went here but when he graduated he moved upstate so we rent it out. Now you both come from families of means so I’m sure this is a perfect arrangement and it allows you to continue going to school. If you both agree I need you to sign these forms and move your belongings to the apartment by tonight. The school will of course provide a moving truck for the furniture so what do you say?” Ichiro and Akira looked at each other for a moment before they happily grabbed the papers reading over them.
“So there are camera’s all around the outside of the perimeter but not inside?” Akira said arching a brow at the Dean.
“Yes,” he said smiling, “my son said he wanted to be secure and still have his privacy so I let him have his way. Is that a problem?”
“Not at all it’s perfect,” Akira said signing his name on the paper, “designed by a college student for a college student.”
“What about parties and all that?” Ichiro asked skeptically. “I mean I’m not a big party animal so I don’t want to stay with one.”
“Good to know,” Akira said since I’m not one either. “We can split everything and since we have separate bathrooms we don’t have to worry about that. I do however practice my violin at home so can you deal with that?”
“Sure I can deal with music practice just fine especially since you don’t suck at it.”
“Good,” the Dean said as Ichiro finally signed the paper and they handed them to him. Well the moving truck will be at the dorm about three so be ready. My secretary will provide you with moving boxes and hopefully I won’t be seeing you in my office unless its about your school work. You must maintain at least a three point oh to stay there got it?”
“That’s an A-B average isn’t it?” Akira said frowning.
“Yes,” said the Dean, “though you’re holding a five point oh and Ichiro is holding a four point oh so I don’t foresee a problem.”
“Nope no problem at all,” Akira said smiling as he stood up and shook the Dean’s hand before Ichiro followed suit.
