How many years had it been? Just seeing her face again brought back
so many memories. Soon thought lost he lost her. It had to be a
miracle that her found her again.
Soon heard a knock on his bedroom door.
“Soon?” Mai-Pai asked. “Are you up yet?”
“Uh… yeah, yeah,” he said. Soon got up. He opened the curtains as
Mai-Pai opened the door.
“Good morning,” she said. “Did you sleep well?”
“Yeah,” Soon said, nodding. Mai-Pai leaned against the doorway. He
stared at her trying to think. He felt he had to say something.
Soon opened his mouth. Mai-Pai cocked her head.
“Is something wrong?” she asked. Soon shook his head.
“No,” he said. “No.” Soon walked past her to the bathroom. Mai-Pai
turned her head as he disappeared down the hall.

Mai-Pai and Soon sat at the table in the kitchen. He ate up another
bowl of rice. The man glanced up at Mai-Pai. She had her eyes on
him. Should he say something?
Soon lowered his chopsticks.
“Mai-Pai,” he said.
“Hm?” she asked. Soon got choked up on his words. Why was this so
hard? Did she want this? Did he really want this?
“I love you,” Soon said at last.
“Excuse me?” Mai-Pai asked. He lowered his eyes. This wasn't coming
out right at all. Still, he couldn't stop talking. Soon lifted his
chin.
“I love you,” he said again. “And I still do.” Mai-Pai froze.
Soon's face dropped. Oh no. Did I go too far? No, that
can't be it. What did I do wrong?
“Mai-Pai?” he asked. She tried to speak at first.
“Uh… Well… I… Uh…” Mai-Pai said.
“Was I out of line?” Soon asked. He braced himself for the worst.
Mai-Pai shook her head.
“No?” he asked. Mai-Pai took a breath.
“That's so sweet of you,” she said. A pause hung over them. Soon
gave her an odd look.
“What do you mean?” he asked. This time, Mai-Pai lowered her
eyes.
“I do love you too,” she admitted quietly. Now, Soon was
speechless.
“You… You do?” he managed to ask. Mai-Pai glanced up at him.
Neither spoke. Soon shifted his eyes back and forth.
“Um… now what?” he asked. She pressed her lips together. Mai-Pai
took him by his hand.
“We just see comes next,” she said. “Together.” Soon stared at her
with big eyes.
“Together?” he asked. Mai-Pai stared at him with a serious look in
her eyes. His heart jumped in the chest. He had his answer. Soon
held her hand back.
“I'm with you,” he said. Finally, Mai-Pai need to declare their
rekindled love aloud again.
