Lecture

Jin first saw the flyers around the city. He was walking to school when he saw the first one. The boy tilted his head.

“Huh?” he asked. The boy reached up and took the flyer down. The word “Exile” caught his attention. Jin read the flyer to himself. What was this? A lecture on the Exile? This sparked intrigue. Jin stuffed the flyer into his bag and headed to school.

Jin couldn't stop thinking about that flyer. He wanted to understand his mother's past. Now, he had two people from the Exile in his life. Maybe one of them could come with him.

“I'm home,” Jin said when he came home that afternoon.

“Welcome back,” Soon said. Jin looked confused.

“Where's mom?” he asked.

“She went out to the shop,” Soon said.

“Oh,” the boy replied. He sat down at the dining room table.

“There's something I want to show you,” he said. Soon cocked his eyebrow.

“What is it?” he asked.

“Hang on,” Jin said. He pulled out his bookbag and reached inside.

“Here,” he said. He handed over the flyer. Soon took it as it slid across the table. He froze as he read it. Jin frowned.

“Too much? Did I trigger you?” he asked. Soon shook his head.

“No…” he said. “No, it's fine.”

“Do you want to go with me?” the boy asked.

“Why do you want to go?”

The boy shrugged. “I want to understand. Mom barely talks about her past. I just have to know. I want to understand what you went through.”

Soon lowered the flyer. “You mean it?”

“Yes,” Soon said. The boy bowed his head.

“Thank you so much,” he said. The older man slid back the flyer.

The lecture began at seven. It was to be held at Kokusai Junior College. Jin left Mai-Pai a note.

“I think I'll call her before we go home,” he said.

“Good idea,” Soon said. “Ready to go?”

“Yeah,” the boy said.

“Right,” Soon said. The boys head out the door.

They took a taxi to get to the college. Jin couldn't think of anything to say. He still didn't know Soon too well. Jin looked out the window instead. Maybe this lecture could help.

The taxi pulled up to the college.

“Thank you,” Soon said. Jin paid the driver. The cab pulled away. Soon looked at Jin.

“Ready to do this?” the boy asked. Soon nodded.

“You sure?” Jin asked. “We can take a moment if you like.”

“No,” the man said. “I can do this. Let's do this.” Jin nodded.

“Okay…” he said. Soon followed him inside.

Meanwhile, the professor straightened her deep red hair. This was for her late father. She worked on this lecture for months. She had to get this right. The professor straightened up her glasses and took a breath.

“Okay,” she said. “I can do this. Give me the strength, Papa.” The professor smiled.

“Right,” she said. She turned and walked out to the lecture hall.
