Open to Me
Soon leaned against his bedroom door. She's out there again. He
doesn't understand why she does this. It's was just like she
did.
Her. Ah yes, her.
Soon sighed. He waited for the next question.
“Are you okay?” Mai-Pai asked. Soon lifted his chin.
“No,” he said.
“What's the matter?” she asked. Soon took a breath.
“I haven't told you about my ex-wife, have I?” Soon asked.
“No,” Mai-Pai said. He took a breath.
“She's like you in a way,” the man said.
“Was she?” Mai-Pai asked.
“Yes.” Soon buried his head in his hands. He took a breath. The man
lifted his head.
“What was she like?” Mai-Pai asked. Soon turned to the door.
“Patient. So patient.” He looked out into the room. “She handled
everything. Money, food, my therapy, and the house.”
“You were in therapy?”
“For a short time.”
“Why did you stop?”
Soon shrugged and shook his head. “I don't know. Divorce. Money.
Life. Take your pick.” He looked up at the ceiling.
“What else about her?” Mai-Pai asked. Her boyfriend looked up at
ceiling.
“What is there to say? We met, dated, got married, and got
divorced.”
“Any children?”
“No. She didn't want any. I didn't argue with her.” It felt so
strange. He hadn't talked about Hang in so many months. Soon
chuckled to himself.
“This feels strange,” he said. “I don't talk about my ex-wife.”
“Why did you get divorced?” Mai-Pai asked. Soon slumped down onto
the floor.
“It just didn't work out,” he said. “She just up and left. I didn't
argue. I just let her have what she wanted. I mean, she deserved it
after all I put her through. I don't know if she took anything. I
just moved out.”
“Do you still have a key?”
Soon shook his head. “I just left and took nothing with me.” There
was a pause. Did he say too much? What would Mai-Pai think now?
“Mai-Pai?” he asked.
“Will you open the door?” she asked. Soon looked confused at
first.
“Sure,” he said. Soon reached up and opened the door. Mai-Pai sat
on the other side of the doorway. She pulled him into her arms.
“Shhh,” she whispered. Soon wanted to speak but couldn't think of
what to say. He just rested in her arms.
“Shhh,” Mai-Pai said again. This wasn't much but this would have to
do for now.
