Love Notes

Mai-Pai frowned in the mirror. How long has it been? She thought the death of her husband was it. She wasn't sure if she could date again. It's been so long. Too long.

“Mom?” she heard behind her. Mai-Pai turned her head. A woman in her late teens stood in the doorway.

“Be,” Mai-Pai said. “Aren't you supposed to be at work?”

“I was just on my way,” she said. “What are you doing?” Her mother became flustered.

“Uh… Uh… Nothing!” Mai-Pai shouted. Her face looked so red. Be smiled and shook her head.

“It's okay,” she said. “I can help you.” Mai-Pai stared at her wide-eyed.

“Really? You mean it?” she asked. Be walked over and took her by the hands.

“Yes,” she said. Mai-Pai bowed her head.

“Thank you,” she said.

Be wasn't the only one to help.

Mai-Pai's friends noticed the rosy glow on her face.

“Come on,” one of them said. “Spit it out. Who's the guy?” Mai-Pai smiled.

“Just an old friend,” she said. Her friends perked up. They just had to know who the lucky man was. Mai-Pai kept a tight lip. But she still needed their help.

“Guys,” she confessed. “I haven't been on a date in years.” Her friends were more than happy to give her advice.

“Sit up straight.”

“Whiten your teeth.”

“Don't laugh too loud.”

“Dress nicely.”

“Lose a little weight.”

“Smile more.”

“Laugh at his jokes.”

“Do something with your hair.”

“Get some new clothes.”

“Here are some of my beauty magazines.”

Mai-Pai's head spun with this information. Whoa! How much has the dating world changed? She looked over her notes. The woman could barely make out her own handwriting. She had to ask her friends to repeat themselves many times. Some advice seemed fine. Others… Well…

Mai-Pai shook her head. She decided to toss out that advice out. Be gave her the best advice of all.

“Just be yourself. Take it easy with him. He's been through so much already. He loves you too.”

Mai-Pai took a breath in the mirror.

“I can do this,” she said. But where to begin? Mai-Pai rubbed her forehead.

“Gah! I don't know what I am doing!” she shouted. She sank down to her knees.

“Tell me what to do!” she yelled. Mai-Pai dropped her head and sighed. Don't worry, you can do it. We believe in in you. Hang is there!
