New Friend

Soon had to get out of the house. This was Mai-Pai's idea.

“It's a nice day out,” she said. “Let's go out for a walk.” The woman urged him out the door.

“Whoa! Okay! Okay!” Soon said. “I'm going.” The couple stood outside. Soon looked up at the sky. The sun nearly blinded him.

“So where are we going?” he asked. The man turned to Mai-Pai.

“Do we have to go anywhere?” she asked. He blinked at her.

“Do we?” he asked.

“No,” she said. Soon just stood silent. Mai-Pai perked up.

“Let's go,” she said. She led him down the street. Soon didn't even get a chance to argue.

----------

This neighborhood was growing on him. Being with Mai-Pai made it much better. Soon stayed by her side. Mai-Pai stretched her arms above her head.

“So beautiful out,” she said. Soon nodded. That's when he happened to look across the street. The man frowned.

“Oh,” he said.

“What?” Mai-Pai asked. Soon pointed across the street. She turned her head. A large single dog stood watching them. Mai-Pai's eyes lit up.

“Aw, how darling!” she said. Soon shook his head.

“Not again,” he muttered. Mai-Pai looked confused.

“What do you mean?” she asked.

“Watch this,” Soon said. He started to walk down the street.

“Soon?” Mai-Pai asked. She looked and saw the dog walking down the street. Soon looked up and kept walking. The dog followed behind. Mai-Pai ran after them.

-----------

Soon clicked his tongue. How did this dog manage to track him down? This couldn't be possible. He turned his head. The dog was getting closer. Th little monster bad his tongue hanging out. The dog finally raced across the street. Soon didn't try to run this time. That never worked. He stopped in his tracks. The beast jumped on his legs. Soon groaned aloud.

“You again?” he asked. The dog happily panted. Mai-Pai caught up to them. Stars filled her eyes.

“How darling!” she shouted. Soon looked up, frowning.

“No, it's not!” he complained. “This little beast won't leave me alone!” The dog looked innocently at Mai-Pai.

“What? I don't know what's talking about. Why is he being so mean to me?” he seemed to ask. Mai-Pai leaned down and pat the dog. The little beast panted.

“No, don't,” Soon said. But it was too late.

“Aw, you're so cute,” Mai-Pai said. “Yes you are. Yes you are!” Soon frowned. Oh great. Now that little beast weaseled his way into Mai-Pai's heart. Soon threw back his head and groaned.

“I'll never get rid of that evil little mutt now!” he wailed.

“Hm?” Mai-Pai asked. The man shook his head. The dog look so happy in the woman's arms. Soon sighed and rubbed his forehead.
