Old Cupids

Mai-Pai about fell out of her chair.

“What?!” she asked. Her employees could hear her from outside of the office.

“I'm sorry,” Soon said. His girlfriend shook her head.

“No,” she said. “Don't be. I'm in the same boat too.”

“Huh?” he asked. Mai-Pai sighed and rubbed her forehead.

“No,” she said. “Don't be. I'm in the same boat too.”

“Huh?” he asked. Mai-Pai sighed and rubbed her forehead.

“Can we meet for lunch?” she asked.

“Sure,” Soon said. His girlfriend breathed.

“Thank you,” Mai-Pai said. The couple hung up. She sat back at her desk. This needed to stop.

----------

The couple met up at a caf across Mai-Pai's shop. They sat near the window. Mai-Pai and Soon looked at each other. Who was going first? Mai-Pai lowered her cup.

“It's…” she began. Soon waited quietly. Mai-Pai took a breath.

“There's this young man,” she said. “He really likes me.” Soon nodded.

“I mean really likes me,” she said.

“Like…” he said. Mai-Pai nodded.

“Oh. I'm sorry to hear that,” he said. She took a sip of her tea. Her cheeks looked so hot.

“Are you okay?” he asked. Mai-Pai shook her head.

“What about Be?” she asked over her cup. Her boyfriend cleared his throat.

“Uh… Well… Uh…” he stuttered out. “Uh… Uh…”

“Something?” Mai-Pai asked.

“Yeah,” Soon said. He buried his head in his hands.

“Oh god,” he said. “Why us? Can't they pick someone their own age?” Mai-Pai shrugged and shook her head.

“I don't know, dearest,” she said. “I don't know.” But then she paused as an idea formed in her head.

“I think there is a way to help us,” Mai-Pai said. Soon lifted his head.

“Huh?” he asked.

“It's a long shot,” she said. She took him by the hands. She took him by the hands.

“I'm desperate at this point,” she said. Soon slowly nodded.

“What did you have in mind?” he asked. Mai-Pain perked up.

“I have a couple of ideas,” she said.

-Saturday-

The couple, Be, and Hindeo made it to the park. The younger pair were over the moon about this double date. Meanwhile, Mai-Pai and Soon held their breaths. This had to work. The couple held hands. Be turned to them.

“You coming?” she asked. Soon waved her off.

“It's fine,” he said. “We'll be with you later.”

“Yeah, you go on ahead,” Mai-Pai said. Be and Hindeo looked at each other. The older couple waved them off.

“Go on,” Soon said. “It's fine.” The young couple shrugged and walked down the hill. Soon turned to Mai-Pai.

“Now what?” he asked. His girlfriend shrugged.

“We wait, I guess,” she said. Soon tried to smile.

“Right…” he said. The couple sat down under a tree. It felt good to rest for a change. Mai-Pai rested her head on Soon's shoulder. She drew her eyes closed. Her boyfriend did the same. It didn't take long for them to fall asleep.

---------

Hours later, Be and Hindeo came back up the hill.

“We're back,” Hindeo said. He and Be made it to the top.

“Look,” Be said, frowning.

“Huh?” Hindeo asked, looking ahead. Soon and Mai-Pai were still asleep.

“Well, that's disappointing,” Hindeo said with his hands on his hips. Be turned to him.

“Now what?” she asked. He shrugged and shook his head. They stared at the old couple sound asleep under the tree. All interest in them died the evening.
