Young Need
Hindeo is a thirsty man. Mai-Pai picked up on that quickly.
Unfortunately, she didn't know how to turn him down politely. He
can't take no for an answer.
“Hey foxy!” Hindeo said in the morning. Mai-Pai forced herself to
smile.
“Hello, Saitou,” she said. She tried not to make eye contact.
Hindeo walked up to her desk, grinning. He didn't speak at first.
Mai-Pai sighed.
“What do you want?” she asked. Hindeo smiled and pulled out a
bouquet of yellow roses.
“Ta-da!” he said. Mai-Pai nervously laughed.
“Aw, thank you. You shouldn't have,” she said. “Really.” He gave
her a boyish grin. How many mornings has he done this? The flowers
ended up going to other rooms out of sight.
“Why don't you ask him to stop?” one of her employees asked.
Mai-Pai sighed.
“Do you think he'd listen?” she asked. Her employee said
nothing.
“Exactly,” the older woman said. Mai-Pai sighed again.
“You don't have to do this,” she said in present day.
“No,” Hindeo said. “But I want to.” The older woman nervously
laughed. Not this again. Mai-Pai looked around for help. Some of
her employees pretended not to see them. She cursed them in her
head. Finally, Hindeo took a bow.
“Well, I'm off,” he said. “I have class this morning.” The young
man stood and winked.
“Catch you later,” he said. Hindeo walked to the glass doors. He
paused and turned around. Mai-Pai stared at him, bracing herself.
The young man blew a kiss and winked. Then he was out the door. It
took Mai-Pai's all not to go crazy.
“Are you alright?” someone asked. She whipped her head around. A
woman stood near the doorway to the back. Mai-Pai shook her
head.
“No,” she said. She rubbed her forehead. The younger woman
frowned.
“Can I get you anything?” she asked. Mai-Pai waved her off.
“No,” she said. “I'm fine, Chiko. Really.” The young woman closed
her mouth. Mai-Pai turned and walked to her office.

At first, it was enduring. Now…
Suddenly, her phone rang.
“Hello?” Mai-Pai asked.
“Mai-Pai?” Soon asked. The woman relaxed at last.
“Soon,” she said. “It's so good to hear you. What's going on?
What's on your mind?” There was a pause on the other line.
“Hello?” Mai-Pai asked.
“Uh… I have a little problem,” Soon said. His girlfriend
paused.
“What?” she asked. He nervously laughed.
“It's your daughter,” Soon admitted. “I think she has a crush on
me.” Mai-Pai about fell out of her chair.
“What?!” she asked. Her employees could hear her from outside the
office.
