It felt strange really. Soon couldn't understand it at first.
“What now?” he asked.
“Come on,” Be said. “They want hear your story. This will be good
for you.”
“But me speaking in front of a crowd?” he asked. Soon shook his
head.
“I can't do it. It would be too weird,” he said. He shivered at the
thought. Mai-Pai put her hand on his.
“It will be fine,” Be said. Soon looked between the two women. How
did it come to this? The man dropped his shoulders.
“Fine. I'll do it,” he said. Be perked up and clapped her hands
together.
“Great, thank you!” she said. “You won't regret this.” Soon
nervously laughed. Mai-Pai held his hand.
“When is this lecture again?” Soon asked.
“Saturday,” Be said. “At three.”
“Okay,” the older man said.
“I'll be there for you,” Mai-Pai whispered. Soon tried to smile.
Maybe this wouldn't be so bad. Maybe…
Oh boy.
--------
Saturday came before anyone knew it. The girls helped Soon through
his lecture and notes.
“Relax,” Be said. “You're got this.” The man tried not to look
nervous. Mai-Pai fixed his tie.
“I'm going to be there,” she said. “Don't worry.” That didn't help.
He seemed to be more nervous.
“Really to go?” Be asked from the doorway. The couple looked
up.
“Uh, yeah,” Mai-Pai said. Soon wanted to say no, but the girls
wouldn't listen. Too late to back down now.
“I'll be downstairs waiting,” Be said. She turned and walked into
the hall. Mai-Pai and Soon looked at each other.
“Let's go,” she said. She took Soon by the hand and led him out of
the room.
---------
The community college came into view as the car pulled up. Soon
tried to relax as the car pulled up into the parking lot. Mai-Pai
rubbed on his arm.
“You're going to do fine,” she whispered. “Just speak from the
heart.” Soon pressed his lips together and nodded. Mai-Pai smiled
and climbed out of the car. He and Be followed behind. A professor
stood outside the main entrance.
“Welcome, welcome!” he said with his arms out. “So glad you are
here!”
“Hello,” Be said. They bowed. She turned to the couple.
“Oh, this is my mom and Gok-san,” she said.
“Hello,” Mai-Pai said.
“Hello,” Soon said. The couple bowed.
“Which on will be giving the lecture?” the professor asked.
“He will,” Be said, pointing at Soon. The professor held out his
hand.
“Well come on,” he said. “You're on in five.” The older man took
Soon by the arm and led him inside. Be turned to her mother.
“Shall we?” she asked.
“Yes,” Mai-Pai said. The women walked into the building.
----------
Soon stood backstage, waiting. He took in a deep breath. Sweat
formed on his brow. Be and Mai-Pai would be there for him. They
believed in him. The man took another breath.
“I can do this,” he said.
“Excuse me,” a small voice said. Soon turned around. A stage hand
with headphones stood inches away.
“You're up,” she said.
“Thank you,” Soon said. He bowed and followed behind. He relaxed
when he spotted Mai-Pai and Be in the front row. This was going to
be fine. Soon relaxed and stood at the podium.
