Soft Holiday
This was Mai-Pai's idea, really. Soon had a blank stare on his
face.
“What?” he asked.
“I want to find that B'N'B we stayed in that night,” Mai-Pai said.
Soon pursed his lips.
“Does it even exist anymore?” he asked. His girl shrugged.
“It might,” she said. “I mean, we can find out. It's worth a shot.”
Mai-Pai stared at him like an excited child. Soon sighed and
smiled.
“Fine,” he said. “We can go.” She playfully hugged him.
“Thank you so much!” Mai-Pai said. Soon patted her on the head.
“Yeah,” he said.
----------
They left early Sunday morning. Mai-Pai did the driving.
“You sure you're okay with this?” Soon asked.
“No, it's fine,” she said. “I don't mind.” Soon looked out the car
window. It felt so weird. How long had it been? Decades? Years?
“Wow…” he mumbled to himself.
“Hm?” Mai-Pai asked. Soon shook his head to himself.

-Autumn 2000-
It didn't rain anymore, but there were sandstorms. This one was a
bad one. Soon got separated from his unit. He was looking for
survivors at the time.
“Come on!” one of his fellow officers shouted at him. The winds
made it too hard for him to hear. Soon thought he could at least
save one person. The blowing sands made it worse. Soon had to give
up his search halfway. He had to get to shelter. It didn't help
that he couldn't see where he was going. All he could do was keep
walking.
He walked until he collapsed onto the sand.
---------
-Present Day-
“Do you know where are going?” Soon asked.
“Uh-uh,” Mai-Pai said. He quickly turned his head.
“What?!” he asked. They had left the city an hour ago. Soon could
see nature outside.
“Then… what are you doing? Where are we going?” he asked.
“I can find it,” Mai-Pai said. “Just relax. It will be fine.” Soon
nervously laughed.
--------
-Fall 2000-
Soon awoke to the familiar sound of fire crackling.
“Hm?” he asked.
“Oh good, you're awake,” a familiar voice said. The soldier quickly
lifted his head. A girl about his age stood in the doorway. Soon
squinted for a better look.
“Mai-Pai?” he asked. The girl walked over to his cot.
“Are you okay?” Mai-Pai asked.
“Yes,” the soldier mumbled. He looked around at the wooden walls
and ceiling.
“Where are we?” he asked.
“I just found this house,” she said. Soon blinked.
“You got stranded too?” he asked.
“Yes,” Mai-Pai said. She sat down by his side.
“I found you on the path,” she said. “I managed to drag you
inside.” Soon's eyes widened.
“How? Are you okay? You aren't hurt, are you?” he asked. Mai-Pai
shook her head. She rubbed her right shoulder.
“It's fine,” she said. “I'm just glad you're okay.” Soon laid his
head back down. Even back then, Mai-Pai cared more about others
than herself.
---------
-Present Day-
“There!” Mai-Pai shouted. Soon looked up.
“What?” he asked. The car pulled to a stop. He looked around.
“Why did we stop?” the man asked.
“We're here,” Mai-Pai said. She pointed out the windshield. Soon
looked to see a large wooden building standing at the end of the
road. Soon's jaw dropped.
“No way…” he said. The building was now another B'N'B. Despite
that, it still looked the same. Soon turned to his girl.
“Is this…?” he asked.
“Yes,” Mai-Pai said. She noticed a mischievous smile on his
face.
“What?” she asked. Soon chuckled as he pointed to the B'N'B.
“This,” he said. “This was where we first slept together that
night.” Mai-Pai blushed as that night danced in her head. Her
boyfriend smiled and took her hand.
“I love you,” he whispered. Soon kissed her on the cheek. From
there, the couple had to stay together.
