Reconnect

“Now what?” Soon asked. Mai-Pai turned her head.

“I don't know,” she said. “What do you want to do?” Soon shrugged. A thought crossed his mind.

“Well, there is something,” he said.

“What?” Mai-Pai asked. Soon shifted in his seat.

“I want to know what happened to my brother,” he said. “I lost contact with him after the Exile.” He felt himself get sad.

“Please?” Soon asked. Mai-Pai took his hand.

“I understand,” she said.

“Can we do that?” he asked.

“Yes,” she said. Mai-Pai rose to her feet.

“Come with me,” she said. The woman walked out of the room. Curious, Soon followed behind.

---------

“What was your brother's name?” Mai-Pai asked. She sat at the computer. Soon stood behind her.

“Hui,” he said. “Gok Hui.”

“Okay,” she said. Mai-Pai started typing.

“What about you?” Soon asked. She froze.

“What about me?” the woman asked.

“Don't you have anyone you're looking for?” he asked. Mai-Pai drew back her hand.

“There is someone,” she said.

“Who?” Soon asked. Mai-Pai turned to him.

“Ono Suki,” she said. “She was a friend of mine.”

“Let's look her up,” Soon said. His girl hesitated at first. Her eyes shifted away from him.

“Alright,” she said. Soon frowned.

“You sure?” he asked.

“Yes,” Mai-Pai said. “Let's find your brother first.” She turned back to the computer and hit send. Soon leaned in for a look. A list of names popped up on the screen.

“When was Hui born?” Mai-Pai asked.

“Oh, wow,” Soon said. He tried to think.

“May? No, June. June,” the man said. “June eighteenth. 1988.”

“Okay,” she said. Mai-Pai narrowed down the search. Three people with the same name now.

“Where was he born?” she asked.

“Incheon,” Soon said.

“Okay,” Mai-Pai said. She narrowed the search down again.

“Is this him?” she asked. Soon leaned in to the screen. His eyes widened.

“Yes! He's still alive?” he said.

“Apparently,” Mai-Pai said. “Here's the address.” She wrote down the address on a piece of paper.

“What are you doing?” Soon asked. Mai-Pai handed him the paper.

“In case you want to find him,” she said. He didn't know what to say. Mai-Pai pushed into his hand.

“T-T-Thank you,” he said. Soon took the paper. Mai-Pai turned back to the computer. She began her search for Suki. Sadly, she wasn't so lucky.

“Oh,” Mai-Pai said. Soon looked up.

“What?” he asked.

“Suki…” she said. “She's dead.” Soon pulled her into his arms. She held him back.

“I'm sorry,” he whispered.

“They have where she is buried,” Mai-Pai said.

“Do you want to see her grave?” he asked. His girl nodded. Soon kissed the top of her head.

“Okay,” he said.

“Thank you,” Mai said.
