Work Helper
Time for another lecture. Soon didn't know when it would stop. Why
couldn't he say no? Mai-Pai rubbed him on the shoulders.
“You don't have to do this,” she said. Soon pressed his lips
together and nodded.
“Then… why do you do this?” she asked.
“I don't know anymore,” he said. Mai-Pai looked at his notes.
“Let me help you,” she said. The woman flipped through the papers.
Soon looked with her. This all was a timeline of his life. Mai-Pai
whistled.
“Wow,” she said. “You have so much here.”
“Yeah,” Soon said. She looked over at him.
“What are you going for here?” Mai-Pai asked.
“My childhood in the Exile?” he said. “This is all I know.”
“And the lecture is one about forgotten history?” she asked.
“Yes,” Soon said. Mai-Pai picked up some pages.
“We could take these out,” she said. He whipped his head
around.
“What?” he asked. Mai-Pai showed him a page of notes.
“You don't need these,” she said. “Just keep it close to the
point.” He kind of frowned.
“Do I have to?” Soon asked. She gave him a sympathetic look.
“Let me help you,” she said. Her boyfriend didn't respond. He
reluctantly let go of the notes.
“Thank you,” Mai-Pai said. She got to work with arranging the
notes.
It was Be's idea for her mom to help with organizing Soon's
lecture. Soon didn't get it at first.
“Why?” he asked. Be put up her hands in a shrug.
“She would understand you better,” she said. “I wasn't born in your
time.” He didn't get it. Last week, Be was chomping at the bit to
help. But now she wasn't interested. What happened?
“You sure you don't want to help?” Soon asked.
“I'm sure,” Be said. “Besides, mom's better at this than I am.” She
wouldn't let him argue any further. Soon sighed and shrugged.
“Fine,” he said. “I'll let her help.” Be smiled to herself.
Soon looked at the paperwork. He had to admit that his girlfriend
was good at organization. Mai-Pai sat back and sighed.
“Done,” she said.
“That quick?” he asked.
“Yeah,” Mai-Pai said. He looked through the new pile.
“I cut down everything to the main talking points,” she said. “It
will help the lecture stick to the point. You have an hour plus
questions, right?”
“Yeah,” Soon said. Mai-Pai noticed him frowning.
“What's wrong?” she asked. Soon looked up at her.
“It's not the full story,” he said. She rubbed his back.
“That's not what they want,” she said.
“But…” Soon said. His words trailed off as he looked at the
paperwork. It all came down to this? Somehow, it didn't seem worth
it anymore. But he couldn't say no. Something had to change.
