Dear Sister
Mai-Pai awoke to her phone ringing. She grumbled as she felt around
for in on the floor.
“Hello?” she asked.
“Mai-Pai! How are you?” a shrill voice asked. Poor Mai-Pai
froze.
“Pumpkin?” she asked. She bolted up in her futon. Dread built up in
her throat. Oh no…
“How are you?” Pumpkin asked again.
“Fine!” Mai-Pai yelped in a high-pitched voice. Her eyes darted
around the room. Oh no. Oh no.
“Uh… What are you calling me for?” Mai-Pai asked.
“I'm in town,” Pumpkin said. “I figured I would come by for a
visit.” The color drained from Mai-Pai's face.
“You what?!” she asked. Panic took over.
“Yeah,” Pumpkin said. “See you soon!” She hung up before the other
woman could speak. Mai-Pai couldn't move. She slowly shook her
head.
“No… No… No!” the poor woman said. Not again. Her stomach
turned.

Everyone saw the look of terror on Mai-Pai's face.
“Mom, what's wrong?” Be asked. Her mother slowly turned her
head.
“She's coming,” she yelped in a whisper. “She's coming. She's
coming. She's coming!” Her daughter looked confused.
“What are you talking about? Who's coming?” Be asked.
“Your aunt,” Mai-Pai whimpered.
“Oh…” Be said. She too started to look pale. Soon looked back and
forth.
“Is something wrong?” he asked.
“My dad's sister,” Be said.
“Oh…” Soon said. He blinked at first.
“Wait… why is that bad?” he asked. The women looked at each other.
It was like they were daring each other to talk.
“Guys?” Soon asked. Be lifted her chin.
“She's… well…” she began. Be pressed her hands down onto the
table.
“Much,” the young woman said.
“Much?” Soon asked. Mai-Pai slowly nodded.
“Yeah…” Be said.
“Oh,” Soon said. Suddenly, the phone rang. The women looked at each
other.
“Pumpkin!” they gasped.
“Pumpkin?” Soon asked.
“Mom, it's Aunt Pumpkin!” Jin yelled. “She said that she's on her
way in twenty minutes!” Mai-Pai and Be froze. Soon tried to process
what was coming next. Mai-Pai and Be leapt to their feet and
started running to clean.
“Guys?” Soon asked.
“Don't just sit there!” Mai-Pai shouted. “Get up! Help us!”
“Right! Okay!” he yelled. The man jumped to his feet. The three of
them got to cleaning.
---------
The sound of high heels paraded up the path. A woman in black high
heels and hot pants walked up with her rolling suitcase. She smiled
to herself. Her hair bounced with each step. She made it to the
door. She smiled as she rang the bell. The woman giggled to
herself. She turned her head as the door opened. Mai-Pai stood
trembling.
“Hello, dear sister!” she said, waving.
“Hello, Pumpkin,” Mai-Pai grumbled. Pumpkin grinned and
giggled.
