Straighten Her Out
But the happy couldn't last long. That evening, Mai-Pai got the
call.
“Hello?” she asked.
“Mai-Pai!” a voice on the other line said aloud. Mai-Pai froze.
No…
“Pumpkin?” she asked.
“Mai-Pai?” her sister-in-law asked. Mai-Pau forced herself to
smile.
“Pumpkin! So nice to hear from you,” she lied. “How have you
been?”
“Good!” Pumpkin said. “And you?”
“Great!” her sister-in-law lied. Sweat formed on her brow. She
started praying in her head. Please don't say it.
Please don't say it. Please don't say
it! But then, Pumpkin said it.
“Steven and I are coming for a visit!” she said. Mai-Pai's eyes
widened.
“What?!” she yelled.
“We'll see you soon! Love you! Bye!” her sister-in-law said.
“No! Wait!” Mai-Pai cried. But it was too late. Pumpkin had already
hung up. The other woman panicked.
“Oh no…” she said. Her heart sank.
“Mai-Pai?” a voice asked behind her. She turned to see Soon in the
doorway. He noticed the look on her face.
“What's wrong?” Soon asked. His girlfriend held up her phone.
“She's coming,” she said in a whisper. Soon froze.
“No…” he said. The couple stood in stunned silence.

Good thing the kids were out. Mai-Pai trembled. Soon held her hand.
She turned her head. He gave her a sympathetic look. Screaming
wouldn't help. She already did that in the bathroom moments
earlier.
“Better?” Soon asked when she came out.
“No,” Mai-Pai said.
That reminded her of something.
“Soon,” she said in present day.
“Yeah?” he asked.
“They don't know about us, do they?” she asked. Soon shrugged and
shook his head. Mai-Pai sighed and shook her head. Too late to turn
back now.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Mai-Pai jumped in her seat.
“It's her!” she yelped. Soon squeezed her hand.
“I can answer the door if you want,” he said. Mai-Pai shook her
head. Her boyfriend raised his eyebrow.
“You sure?” he asked. She nodded once.
“I have to do this,” Mai-Pai said. Soon drew back his hand.
“Okay,” he said. She stood up and walked to the door. She took a
breath and looked out the peephole.
“Who is it?” Mai-Pai asked. Pumpkin leaned in close.
“Hi!” she said. Mai-Pai trembled as she opened the door. Pumpkin
and Steven stood outside. The woman perked up.
“Mai-Pai!” she said. “So glad to see you again!” She wildly hugged
her sister-in-law. Mai-Pai nervously laughed.
“Yeah…” she mumbled. She looked over at Steven. He stood off to the
side, saying nothing. The man only waved with a sheepish smile on
his face. She could only pity him.
Suddenly, Pumpkin paused.
“Oh, he's still here?” she asked.
“Huh?” Mai-Pai asked. She turned to see Soon walking towards
them.
“Hello, Pumpkin,” he said with a sweat drop on his head.
“Uh-huh…” Pumpkin said. Mai-Pai lowered her eyes.
“He lives with us now,” she said. Pumpkin raised her eyebrow.
“Is that right?” she asked.
“Yes,” the couple said.
“Oh…” she said.
“What?” Mai-Pai asked. Pumpkin shook her head.
“Nothing,” she said. “Nothing at all.” The woman let go of Mai-Pai.
She gave the couple a judgment look. No one spoke for a moment.
Steven cleared his throat.
“So nice to see you,” he said.
“Yeah,” Mai-Pai mumbled. She moved aside to let her in-laws in.
Pumpkin and Steven walked in without saying a word. Mai-Pai and
Soon exchanged looks. This was going to be a nightmare visit.
Mai-Pai shook her head as she closed her door.
