Help Me Out
As if things couldn't get any worse. The doorbell rang. The couple had confused looks on their faces.
“Who is that?” Soon mouthed. Mai-Pai shook her head. She got up and walked to the door.
“Who is that?” she asked as she looked out the peephole. Pumpkin stood outside.
“It's me,” she whimpered. Mai-Pai froze as she went pale. No… No. No!
“Pumpkin!” she said as she opened the door. “What are you doing here?” Her sister-in-law stood crying. Mai-Pai looked confused.
“What's wrong?” she asked.
“He's cheating on me!” Pumpkin said. Mai-Pai blinked.
“Huh?” she asked. Her sister-in-law jumped to hug her. Mai-Pai looked around for help. What the hell was this?
-------
Mai-Pai, Soon, and Pumpkin sat at the table in the dining room. The couple didn't know how to approach this.
“So… what happened?” Mai-Pai asked. Pumpkin sniffled.
“Steven's been cheating on me!” she wailed. “I just know it!” Pumpkin broke down crying. Soon handed her a tissue. Pumpkin blew her nose.
“Thank you,” she said. Mai-Pai narrowed her eyes.
“How are you sure of this?” she asked. “Do you have any proof?” Pumpkin sniffled. She reached for her purse. She pulled out her phone. Mai-Pai and Soon took a look.
“It's locked,” Mai-Pai said. Pumpkin reached down and unlocked the screen. She opened up a folder called “Evidence”. The couple took a look. Pumpkin had twelve pictures saved. All of them were of Steven talking to another woman. They looked really friendly.
“So?” Mai-Pai asked. Tears welled up in Pumpkin's eyes.
“It's her!” she wailed. “She's the other woman!” The couple looked at each other.
“You sure?” Soon asked.
“Yes!” Pumpkin shouted. “She's trying to steal my husband!” Tears ran down her cheeks.
“What is her name?” Mai-Pai asked.
“Huh?” her sister-in-law asked.
“The woman,” Mai-Pai said. “Does she have a name?” Pumpkin sniffled.
“I don't know,” she said.
“Well… they could just be friends,” Soon said.
“No!” Pumpkin shouted. “He's cheating on me! I just know it!” Pumpkin broke down sobbing.
“Uh… what do we do?” Soon whispered. Mai-Pai didn't have an answer. She just shook her head.
“Is something wrong?” a voice asked. Mai-Pai, Soon, and Pumpkin looked up. Mrs. Henderson stood in the doorway. She looked confused and concerned. Mai-Pai sighed and waved her off.
“It's fine,” she said. “Just family problems.”
“What?” the old lady asked. Mai-Pai waved her off. Mrs. Henderson shrugged and walked off.
“Who's that?” Pumpkin asked.
“Oh, that's our editor for the script,” Mai-Pai said. “For the film.” Her sister-in-law nodded.
“Oh,” she said. The woman sniffled.
“Yeah,” Mai-Pai said. She frowned. She knew what was coming next.
“Listen, I can book you a hotel room if you want,” Mai-Pai said. Pumpkin shook her head.
“Why can't I stay here?” she asked.
“Um… you can't!” Mai-Pai was quick to say. “We have the kids, Choko, and our editor. I don't think we have any more room.”
“But…” Pumpkin whimpered. The sister-in-law was about to speak when the phone rang. Mai-Pai relaxed. Thank goodness.
“Excuse me,” she said. The woman bolted from the room. She was happy to find her phone in the living room.
“Hello?” Mai-Pai asked.
“Mai-Pai?” a man's voice asked. Her eyes widened in relief.
“Steven!” she said aloud. “So good to hear from you!” Pumpkin wailed from the other room. Mai-Pai covered her free ear. This had to stop. She was going to have to be the one to do it. Mai-Pai straightened up.
“Listen, we need to talk,” she said.
