Country Free

Mai-Pai waited in the car. She was tempted to honk the horn. Come on! They were supposed to be gone by now. They should be on the road. The woman puffed up her cheeks.

Suddenly, the front door opened. Soon stepped outside. Mai-Pai perked up as he walked to the car.

“Sorry about that,” he said. “I was trying to find my watch.” He held up his wrist.

“Found it,” he said. His wife smiled as she shook her head.

“Can we go now?” Mai-Pai asked.

“Yes, yes,” he said. Mai-Pai put the car in reserve and pulled out. They were going to the country for the weekend. Just a nice little getaway. They would be back by Monday. Soon leaned his head on her shoulder. His wife giggled.

“How did you find this cabin?” she asked. Soon kept his eyes on the road.

“Just by looking around,” he said.

“Oh!” Mai-Pai said. “Getting tech savvy, I see.”

“Sort of,” her husband said. “Still not a fan.” Mai-Pai shrugged.

“Fair enough,” she said.

The drive took most of the morning. The couple took in the scenery around them. So much green on either side of them. It felt surreal to Soon. He blinked several times.

“It's real honey,” his wife said. Soon's face turned bright red. He mumbled something under his breath. Mai-Pai pretended not to hear him.

They came to a small town near the sea. Mai-Pai pulled up to a small yellow house near a field.

“Here we are,” she said. “This is it.” Soon looked out the window.

“Great,” he said. The man climbed out of the car.

“Wait up!” Mai-Pai shouted after him. She jumped out of the car and ran to catch up.

“Wait!” she yelled. “We need to get out bags! And I still have the key.” Soon slowed down at the door. Mai-Pai stopped to catch her breath. She held up one finger.

“You can't get in without the key,” she said at last. The woman reached into her pocket and pulled out the key to the house. She walked up to the door and unlocked it.

“There,” Mai-Pai said as she opened the door.

“Thank you so much,” Soon said, bowing his head. He walked into the house.

“Don't forget our bags!” Mai-Pai shouted. Her husband held up a finger and nodded. He turned and walked to the car. She followed behind. They would get time to enjoy the house soon enough. The house and the weekend altogether.
