Worried
It's another weekend at Shin and Kimiko's house. But something
isn't right. It's with the maid.
Hina's been by Shin's side for a long time. She's like, no, is a
dear friend to him. They can spend nights talking to each other.
But today, she seems off.
“What's wrong, Hina-san?” Mai-Pai asked. The maid tried not to
cry.
“Nothing,” Hina said. She sniffled.
“Come on,” Mai-Pai said. “Talk to me. What's the matter?” The woman
waited patiently. Hina sighed and put down the cloth.
“Got time?” she asked.
“Sure,” Mai-Pai said. The maid sat down next to her.
“It's my daughter,” she said. “She's… She's…” Hina sighed
again.
“What's wrong?” Mai-Pai asked. “Is she sick?” Hina nodded once.
“Oh… I'm sorry to hear that,” Mai-Pai said. “Do Shin and Kimiko
know?” The maid nodded.
“They want me to take time off,” she said. The other woman cocked
her head to the side.
“So… why are you still here?” she asked. Hina took a breath.
“Can't leave,” she said. “It doesn't feel right.” Mai-Pai
frowned.
“It's okay,” she said. “You can go and see her.” The maid just
looked at her.
Meanwhile, Shin listened from the hall.
“So that's it,” he said to himself. An idea formed in his head.
-----------
Everyone had dinner at six. Shin sat at the head of the table. Soon
and Mai-Pai sat to the left. Kimiko and Hina sat to the right. No
one sat at the other end. Everyone was eating quit at first. Shin
smiled to himself.
“Everyone,” he said aloud. His family looked up. Shin lowered his
fork.
“I think we should take a trip,” he said. His eyes turned to
Hina.
“To your hometown,” he added. The maid froze.
“What, sir?” she asked. Shin smiled.
“We're going to see your daughter. All of us,” he said. Soon and
Mai-Pai looked at each other. Hina covered her mouth. Tears filled
her eyes.
“Sir…” she said. Shin held up his hand.
“We leave tomorrow morning,” he said. Kimiko smiled. Hina didn't
know what to say.
“Sir…” she said at last. Shin lowered his hand.
“You're welcome,” he said.
“Wow,” Hina said at last. Her boss smiled as he took another bite
of dinner. Meanwhile, Soon sat wondering how this would work.
What are you up to, dad? Shin just grinned the
whole time.
