Another Round

On Tuesday, the phone rang. Mai-Pai mumbled to herself as she felt around for it.

“Hello?” she asked. Mai-Pai paused.

“Steven?” she asked. The call didn't last long.

“Oh… Oh…” she said. The woman frowned.

“When are you coming here?” she asked. Mai-Pai's stomach turned as she listened.

“Oh…” she said. “Okay. Sure.” Mai-Pai lowered her phone. Oh no…

---------

Mai-Pai and Soon sat at the dining room table.

“They're coming again?” he asked.

“Yeah,” she said, nodding.

“How bad is it?”

“Really bad.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah.” Both sat silent. Mai-Pai grimaced.

“I don't want to do this,” she said.

“I know,” Soon said. “Why did you agree to do this?” His wife's head dropped.

“I don't know!” she wailed. Mai-Pai felt like crying. Suddenly, the doorbell rang. She quickly lifted her head. The woman looked so pale.

“Do you want me to get the door?” Soon asked. His wife slowly nodded.

“Okay,” he said. Soon rose to his feet and walked the front door.

Steven and Pumpkin stood outside. She had a sour look on her face. He looked ready to run away.

“Um… hi,” Soon said. Pumpkin hugged as she walked inside. Soon looked at Steven.

“What's with her?” he whispered. Steven lowered his head.

---------

“Mai-Pai!” Pumpkin wailed. “I need a hug! Mai-Pai! Mai-Pai!” Mai-Pai froze at the table. Here it comes. She slowly turned around.

“Yeah?” she asked. Pumpkin stood in the doorway, frowning.

“What's wrong?” her sister-in-law asked. The other woman walked over and sat down at the table. She huffed aloud.

“What is it? What's wrong?” Mai-Pai asked. Pumpkin looked ready to cry.

“He makes me so mad!” she shouted.

--------

“I don't know what I did,” Steven said. Soon just nodded.

“Yes, yes,” he said.

“She can be so unreasonable.”

“Yes.”

“I don't know what to do.”

“Yes.” Soon nodded the whole time. Steven sighed and rubbed his forehead.

“I want to leave sometimes,” he said. Soon rubbed his back.

“There, there,” he said. “You can't mean that.”

“Yes I do,” Steven said. The other man had a nervous look on his face. Mai-Pai must have felt the same way.

The couple knew they couldn't keep this up. Something had to change.

Reluctant
