Road Danger

Time to hit the countryside again. Mai-Pai stretched her arms out.

“Ah! It feels good to be back!” she said. Soon stepped out of the car as well. Mai-Pai turned around.

“Ready to go?” she asked.

“Not really,” Soon said. Mai-Pai walked up to the front door. Mai-Pai rang the bell.

“Coming!” a woman's voice said. The couple backed up as the door opened.

“Oh! Mai-Pai, Soon!” Hina said. “So good to see you!” The women bowed.

“You're looking well,” Mai-Pai said.

“Is dad in?” Soon asked.

“Oh, no,” Mina said. “They're at the town council.”

“Town council?” Mai-Pai asked.

“Yeah,” the maid said. “The village is deciding on whether or not to allow a bike path to run through it.”

“Ah,” Soon said.

“Where is that?” his wife asked.

“All the way in town,” Hina said. “You can't miss it. The building is near a dog statue.”

“Thank you!” Mai-Pai said. She turned to her husband.

“Ready to go?” she asked. Soon shrugged.

“All right,” Soon said. Mai-Pai and walked to the car. Soon bowed and followed behind her.

Slam! Slam! Slam! Slam! The gavel hit the podium. The packed town hall council went quiet. The mayor cleared his throat.

“We shall begin the meeting!” he said. Soon and Mai-Pai slipped in through the door. They sat in the back.

“Miya-san had the floor,” the mayor said. An old man in his seventies stood with a piece of paper in his hand.

“I propose that we have the bike path come through the village,” he said. The whole room clapped. Mai-Pai looked confused.

“Why?” she asked. That wasn't meant to be said aloud. By the time she realized what she said, it was too late. Everyone was staring at her. Mai-Pai froze.

“Oh…” she said. Miya-san raised his eyebrow.

“What do you mean?” he asked. The younger woman blinked.

“Uh… um… Why do you want this bike path?” she asked. “Won't it cause problems?” There was a pause. The villagers looked at each other. Shin stood up.

“This village is dying,” he said. “We're getting old. The youth care leaving us.” Another villager stood up.

“We need this! Another village is trying take it from us!” he said.

“We need this!”

“We need this!”

“We need this!”

Mai-Pai sat stunned. She hadn't expected this. Soon put his hand on her shoulder. She lowered her head.

“Sorry,” Mai-Pai said. A woman next to her gave her a pity look. Miya-san cleared his throat.

“Shall I carry on?” he asked.

“Yes,” the mayor said.

“Right,” the old man said. Mai-Pai's face turned red as Miya-san kept reading. Maybe she could disappear into the floor? That would be nice.
