Smile Girls
This will not do. Mai-Pai couldn't watch her daughter and employee
spiraling. Over men, no less. Be and Chiko sat in the living
room.
“What are we doing out here?” Chiko whispered. Be shrugged and
shook her head. The clock ticked in the background.
“Hey! Sorry to keep you waiting!” Mai-Pai said. She jogged over to
the young women. The older woman smiled.
“Why are we here?” Be asked. Mai-Pai grinned.
“We're going to spend the day together,” she said. Be and Chiko
looked confused.
“What?” they asked. Mai-Pai giggled. This wasn't going to be easy.
But she was going to try.
----------
This day was going to be easy. They were going to have lunch and
dinner. First, they were going to take a walk. They didn't have to
talk. So they didn't at first. Be and Chiko looked so sour. Mai-Pai
smile. Everything was so nice today. Birds were singing. The
children were out playing. Summer will be here tomorrow. Mai-Pai
closed her eyes and took a breath.
“Mmm,” she said. Her girls said nothing. Mai-Pai turned to
them.
“So,” she said. “How is everyone?” Be and Chiko didn't speak.
Mai-Pai shrugged.
“Let's get some ice cream later,” she said. The girls said
nothing.
“Okay,” Mai-Pai said. She walked between the girls. There were no
phones allowed. Even Mai-Pai turned off her phone.
“Mom, why are we here?” Be asked. Mai-Pai turned her head.
“Hm?” she asked. Be threw up her hands.
“I don't see the point,” she said. “Why are we here?” Mai-Pai
slowed down her tracks.
“You shouldn't be like this,” she said.
“What?” Chiko asked. Mai-Pai didn't turn her head.
“I don't like seeing you like this,” she said. The woman turned her
head. Mai-Pai gave the girls a little smile.
“I'm doing this for you,” she said. “If it takes your mind off of
your problems. I don't know if it will help. But I'm trying here.”
Be and Chiko stared at her. Mai-Pai broke into a big smile.
“Shall we get going?” she asked.
“Uh… sure,” Be said. Chiko slowly nodded.
“Good!” Mai-Pai said. She turned and started walking down the path.
Be and Chiko looked at each other. What choice did they have?
“Come on!” the older woman yelled.
“Coming!” Chiko yelled. She and Be ran to keep up. Might as well
make the most of this walk. What choice did they have?
