Pumpkin's Surprise

Pumpkin and Steven pulled up into the driveway. She couldn't help but giggle to herself. Steven rolled his eyes.

“I can't wait to tell them!” she said. She squealed and clapped her hands together.

“Yeah, yeah,” Steven said. They climbed out of the car and walked up to the front door. Pumpkin rang the bell.

Everyone looked up at the sound of the doorbell.

“Are we expecting anyone today?” Be asked.

“No…” Mai-Pai said. The doorbell rang again. She turned and walked to the door.

“Who is it?” Mai-Pai asked as she looked out the peephole. Pumpkin perked up as she waved. Her sister-in-law froze.

“Pumpkin?” she asked. Everyone else looked up. Pumpkin rang the bell again. Mai-Pai sighed and opened the door.

“Mai-Pai!” Pumpkin shouted. She hugged her wildly.

“So good to see you!” she said. Mai-Pai nervously laughed.

“Yeah… so nice to see you too,” she said. “Uh… what are you doing here?” Pumpkin let go with a smile on her face.

“I have some great news,” she said.

“What?” Soon asked. Pumpkin stood on her tip-toes and waved.

“Hey, Soon!” she said.

“Hi…” he mumbled.

“What is the news you have?” Mai-Pai asked.

“Oh!” Pumpkin said. She cleared her throat.

“We've adopted a son!” she said, clapping her hands. Everyone whipped their heads around.

“What?!” they shouted. Steven stood next to her.

“That's right!” his wife said. “We adopted a boy from China.” Silence filled the room. Mai-Pai struggled to speak. Pumpkin kept her gaze on Mai-Pai. Her sister-in-law was frozen. Steven stood quiet the whole time.

Everyone sat in the living room now. Pumpkin still hadn't stopped smiling. Her news was hard to comprehend.

“You adopted a son?” she asked.

“Yes,” Pumpkin said. Her sister-in-law made a face. What was this? This couldn't be real.

“What's his name?” Chiko asked.

“Haru,” Pumpkin said. “Want to see a picture?”

“Uh… sure,” Mai-Pai said. Pumpkin reached into her wallet. She showed off a picture of a baby boy.

“Ah,” Mai-Pai said.

“See?” Pumpkin asked.

“Yeah,” her sister-in-law said. “He is really cute.” The others came around for a look.

“He is cute,” Be said. Pumpkin giggled.

“We're picking him up tomorrow,” she said. Mai-Pai and the others said nothing. This was the first time they'd seen her so happy. On the one hand, she would be too busy to mess with them. But on the other hand, Haru would have her as a mother. Mai-Pai and her family had nothing to say. Oh boy…
