Original Stories Fan Fiction ❯ Kazemaru and Miharu ❯ Chapter 15
[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Kazemaru sat on a rock, holding his leg tightly, teeth gritted. It was a deep gash, almost to the bone, and he watched as the blood seeping through his fingers and onto the earth slowed and finally stopped. He held it a while longer, and stared at the body of the dead demon a few yards away from him. The bastard had fought hard, and Kaze knew he had half a dozen other wounds, but this was the worst. It would take almost a whole day to heal, and that was not convenient. The demons trying to penetrate into his land had grown stronger and cockier by the day, and he wondered what on earth could be happening in the neighboring territory to the north, where they all seemed to be coming from. It was if something was driving them all out. Someone was trying to establish a new reign, he reasoned. Either that or there was a damn good holy human who was exorcising them all. Maybe it was that one girl… she'd be about 25 now, coming into her powers fully. He shook his head. It didn't seem to be the sort of thing she would do. Destruction on a massive scale was more her style, not systematic exorcism.
At last he let go of his leg, it seemed it would hold for the time being. He shifted himself, checking for other major injuries, and winced when he tried to fold in his left wing. He pulled it forward to where he could see it.
Damn. The outermost bone was broken. He knew he'd injured it, because he hadn't been able to fly. But he didn't know it was that bad. He used his hands to pull it in towards him, the muscles in his back straining as this was not a normal position for his wings. This would be so much easier if Miharu… he stopped himself and laughed a little despite his pain. If Miharu were here she'd probably faint. If the fact that he was covered in blood and wounds weren't enough, he was in his transformed state, too. No telling how she would react to an 8-foot-tall Yokai with giant bat wings. He knew he looked very different this way, and he wondered if she'd even be able to recognize him.
He thought about her very hard as he pulled the bone out and reset it in the proper position. She was a good distraction, he judged, and decided that there weren't any other contusions that couldn't handle themselves. He figured it wouldn't be a good idea to transform back or fly because of his wing, and so he used magic to lift himself up into the air.
Suddenly something white fluttered in front of him, and he caught it, careful not to crush it in his large hands. It was a note from Miharu, and he held it gingerly between his claws and read it intently.
Papers of Introduction? She actually thought that would work? He shook his head. He supposed it was worth trying, even if it meant just showing her that she was wrong. It wasn't as if it would pose any danger to him or anything. He tucked the paper carefully into his obi and returned to his cave. He wanted to write back to her right away, but he couldn't hold a brush right in this form, and he was exhausted anyway. He lay down on his pallet carefully, face down, and resigned to write to her in the morning. He then fell asleep.
