The next day Miharu went to her father with the letter. He read it carefully, and then looked at her sternly, trying to hide a smile.
“Do you know who this man is?” he asked.
She shrugged, her own smile playing on her face. Since he was not a man, she could lie easily. “I can only guess. The girls think it might be Nibori-san, since he was so quiet, but it could have been any of the men who visited.”
He nodded. “And you are alright marrying someone you may not know very well?”
She pretended to be shocked. “Of course, father. As long as he is high enough rank, I suppose. Besides, I feel that I do know him, from these letters he's written me.”
Her father nodded again. “Well, this is all very strange… not knowing who it is. But I suppose we shall just have to wait and see, ne?” he struggled even more not to smile.
Miharu paused a moment. Was he…? She grinned. “Oh thank you, father! Thank you so much.”
He smiled back and patted her cheek. “Anything for my daughter's happiness.”
She paused a moment. “Father… what if he isn't very rich… or a little strange…but of course still an honorable person?”
He paused too. “Well, then I suppose I would have to consider it further. But as long as you like him, he should be a fine man.”
She smiled, secretly triumphant. “Of course. Thank you, Father.”
He laughed a little. “Now go back to your attendants. They are probably dying to hear the news. I will see to it that the instructions in this letter are carried out.”
She nodded, and left quickly.
Emi was waiting outside the room. Miharu opened her mouth to gloat, but Emi held her hand up to stop her. “I heard the whole thing, there's no need.”
Miharu closed her mouth and smiled in a sort of told-you-so way. Emi sighed, and shook her head.
“I'm not sure `a little strange' covers it, but what's the worst that could happen? They'll kill him and then this whole mess will be over with.” She said lightly.
Miharu stopped and simply stared at Emi.
Emi looked back, slightly amused. “Hadn't thought of that?” she asked smugly.
Miharu stiffened and looked at Emi down her nose. “No, I will admit it never crossed my mind. But that is simply because of the sheer impossibility of that happening. If it did come to a fight, no one in this palace could defeat him.”
Emi looked to the heavens and shrugged. “Who could say?”
Miharu just shook her head in disbelief. “How dare you… address your superior… in such a manner?!” Before she could stop herself, Miharu slapped Emi across the face.
They looked at each other in mild horror for a moment, and then Emi looked away, angry. Miharu frowned and walked the other way quickly.
