Chapter 3
“The Night the Phoenix Cried”

“Chise! Chise!” Kazuyuki cried her name with no response. Hen then grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her, which still had no effect. “Chise snap out of it! You're scaring me!”
The front door opened just as a resounding smack was heard. Chise gasped and finally came to herself.
“Chise, are you alright?” He asked still worried.
“I-I think so…” she started, “but you didn't have to slap me!” She said getting angry.
“Well what did you want me to do?! You wouldn't respond to anything else I tried!” He retorted, getting angry too.
“That's enough you two!” Cried Kazuyuki's mother, making them both jump. “What has happened to make the two of you act this way?” She was standing in the doorway wearing her apron.
Kazuyuki hesitated. Their brief argument had caused him to forget what the problem had been. He remembered now, as well as the look on Chise's face. He turned back to Chise, his anger completely forgotten.
“I'm sorry I hit you but you were acting weird, so I was worried…” His mother game him an encouraging nod from behind Chise.
Chise wouldn't look at him but the anger was gone in her face too. “I'm sorry, it's just…”
“I think that we should get inside; there's no use in standing out in the cold. I'll make some tea and you two can talk in the sitting room.”
Kazuyuki and Chise both nodded, went inside, and sat at the table. Kazuyuki started, “So…” breaking the silence. He couldn't help the some that came to his face.
Chise gave him a weird look. “What's so funny?”
Kazuyuki still grinning shook his head. “Nothing. I was just reminded of how we first met.” A smile appeared on her face when she saw what he was getting at; though the smile left his.
“Chise, that thing we saw, I know you know what it was. You also said `how?'. Can you please explain it to me?”
Chise adverted her eyes again, “It's difficult to know where to begin. That creature does not have a name. You could almost think of it as a kind of anti-Shikigami. A creature like that has not been seen in this realm for more then a thousand years.”
There came footsteps from the stairs “I knew it…” said Kane as he appeared in the sitting area.
“You know, it's rude to listen in on the conversations of others.” Chise replied.
“Who me? I merely woke to the most annoying imitation of a rooster you could possibly get and decided to see what was going on.” Chise gave him a look that clearly said `yeah right'. “So you are the one who fought Him…”
“Which do you prefer, to ask questions or hear the story?”
“Hear it naturally.”
“Then sit down and shut up, please.” Chise said.
Kazuyuki bit back a comment he was longing to say; he wanted to hear the story too much.
“Those monsters, those anti-Shikigami, they are suppose to be controlled but That Demon… I have no idea how they could be on the move again…” Chise said.
“I have a theory to that,” replied Kane “the curse you and your partner preformed could have failed.”
Chise looked shocked, “But how? Kaito and I did everything right and I made sure He was sealed!”
“Wait, hold up! Can we start at the beginning please? I'm completely lost. Who are you guys talking about?” cried Kazuyuki.
“Oh that's right, you wouldn't know about this,” Kane said. “A thousand years ago there was this great evil demon.”
“What's his name?” Kazuyuki asked.
“We don't know. Any who did know are not alive to tell you…” replied Kane. “He terrorized the human realm and killed countless humans and shikigami. Most of the victims were innocent people; very few at the time tired to confront Him. By the time Chise and her partner came around He had a pretty good hold on the human realm. With how peaceful the country has been since then you couldn't begin to imagine the terror and chaos He and his minions caused.”
“When Kaito and I finally managed to track Him down the death toll was so high that we believed that if nothing was done the human race was at risk of becoming extinct. The fight took three nights and four days at His castle in the Shikigami realm. There were many times when we could have died, but we finally managed to weaken him enough to where we could risk the sealing spell…” Chise suddenly became said. “And then when our concentration was on Him…Kaito got stabbed from behind from minion we thought was dead…I couldn't stop to check if he was alright. If I had cancelled the spell in the middle it would have backfired on us instead…”
Kazuyuki could just picture the whole scene in his mind. [That must have been so hard for her to do…]
“After I made sure that He as sealed I went to Kaito…but it was too late. I tried to heal him but I knew it was no good. Nothing can revive the dead.”
“`Heal him?' Oh!” said Kazuyuki “You must be a phoenix Shikigami! I always heard that phoenixes had strong healing powers.
“Phoenix tears…” Kane replied softly.
“I admit that they were not hard to make that night.” Chise said.
Kazuyuki looked at her with sympathy. `Chise…I'm so sorry…' She smiled at him. He then thought of something.
“But something doesn't make sense…Chise is sure she sealed Him…So how can His minions be flying around?”
Kane looked thoughtful. “There are a few explanations I can think of… He could be waking from the seal…that technique is not foolproof. There are a lot of factors that could weaken its power. And then there's you Chise. Kazu is your first partner since Kaito in the past thousand hears. That in itself is strange.”
Chise looked confused. “hmm…now that I think about it…I don't really remember what happened after I released Kaito's soul…”
“I thought so…” said Kane. “I remember sensing a second sealing spell. He must have had more powerful allies than we thought…”
“That must be it, because the next thing remember is sensing Kazuyuki's power calling me…” Chise replied.
Kazuyuki's attention had completely left the conversation as he remembered something himself. He looked around in alarm. “Where's mom? The tea should have been done a long time ago.” He stood up. Both Shikigami followed suit looking alarmed as well. Kazuyuki had almost reached the kitchen when he heard the same monstrous roar from that morning. This time coming from the backyard that was accessible from the kitchen.
“Mom!!” cried Kazuyuki as he ran towards the sound followed closely by both Shikigami.
What he saw made him stop in his tracks.
