Ina stared into the sky as three figures flew through the air from the shrine, heading toward Kyoto. Fear raced through her suddenly. Since she was a kid she always felt a firm kind of connection between her and Sato, and at this moment she felt his consciousness completely disappear. Something was definitely wrong, and she knew she didn’t have the power to do anything about it.
“Ina,” said Kanate, placing a hand on Ina’s shoulder.
Ina came from her terrified trance and glanced around. “What is it?”
“I’m going up there,” Kanate said. “I have to make sure my brother’s okay. Will you come with?”
Ina nodded. “Sure, let’s go.”

Pinaka brought up her map. Kisuro looked over from the passenger seat of the car. “Is that safe?” he asked.
“Sure, no problem,” said Pinaka. “Hm, looks like that demon’s on the move to Kyoto now. I wonder what happened in Hikone.”
“Hey, watch out!” Kisuro cried suddenly.
Pinaka looked up and realized she had slowly drifted into the opposite lane, and a large eighteen-wheeler was heading straight for them, honking loudly. Pinaka jerked the wheel fast and pulled back into the correct lane. She looked over at Kisuro and smiled. “See? No problem.”
Kisuro had his hands braced on the dashboard. He was breathing heavily. “You’re a maniac, woman,” he said, exasperated. Jira was sitting on the center console, her nose down and covering her eyes with her paws.
“I’m not so bad,” Pinaka said. “My driving instructor said I did pretty good for someone like me.”
“Oh yeah? How many times did it take you to pass your test?”
“Twenty-three.”
Kisuro plastered his nose against the passenger window, clawing at it. “I’m doomed,” he said.

Ryomaru soared across the sky. His companion Hasu had transformed into a pair of wings that allowed Ryomaru to travel great distances at a time. He pressed a button on his scanner, bringing up the map before his eye.
“The demon has moved to Kyoto,” he said. “Hasu, we need to hurry. Things could get ugly.”
Hasu howled loudly and flapped harder to speed them through the air.

“This is quite relaxing,” said Kaiban as he soared over the large city of Kyoto, Risa and Totsa on either side of him, Totsa still holding onto Sato’s grandfather. “You never really enjoy the fresh air until you’re sealed away for two millennia in a musky place.” He looked around at Risa. “Is my castle still here?”
“No, sir,” Risa responded. “It was remodeled during the Meiji Revolution, at the time Edo became the capital.”
“As expected,” Kaiban said.
“Where will we post our new holdings, sir?” Totsa asked.
Kaiban stopped in the air. Totsa and Risa came to a halt as well. He took a moment to think. “We should wait until reaching Edo,” Kaiban said. “For now, I think I’m going to have a little exercise. My powers feel quite”––Kaiban stretched hugely––“rusty.”
Kaiban raised a finger. “Poor unsuspecting citizens,” he said maliciously. A small, green orb appeared above his finger and he launched it at the ground bustling with people. He narrowed his eyes as the smile on his face stretched from ear to ear.
In an instant a crater formed in the ground. Buildings tumbled to the ground, and fires erupted. Screams of terror and pain echoed through the air. Kaiban felt invigoration through his body as he enjoyed the sounds. He bit his bottom lip, drawing blood as he felt the enjoyable sensation.
“Your powers have remained the same,” Totsa said. “You’re as strong as ever.”
“It would seem so,” Kaiban said. He looked around at Grandpa hanging in Totsa’s arms. “How do you like this, old man? It’s this power that’s going to reshape Edo and all of Japan into my perfect kingdom. There’s nothing that you, your grandson, or that ungrateful succubus whore can do about it.”
“Sato will stop you,” Grandpa said lowly. “I believe in him. He’ll find a way to stop you.”
“We’ll see,” Kaiban laughed. “Come Risa and Totsa, let us find more fun here.”

Muma buttoned up her shirt and looked over at Sato. He was sitting on his knees, his face completely red. “See, that wasn’t so bad, was it?” Muma asked.
“Yeah,” Sato said, barely audible. He couldn’t bring himself to look at Muma after their event together.
“I’m just relieved that you’re alive,” said Muma as she stood and pulled up her panties under her skirt. “If you had died on me, I never would have had my powers back.”
Sato jerked his head to Muma. “Is that all that you wanted me for? You just wanted your powers back?”
“Of course not, Sati,” Muma said, stroking a hand across Sato’s cheek. “Sati, I told you before there’s more than just that now. If Kaiban hadn’t woken up, I could care less about getting my powers back.”
“I suppose,” Sato said, turning back from Muma. “So, how do you feel?”
Muma giggled. “Just great after we became one.”
Sato knocked her hand away. “I mean your powers! Do you have full control of them now?”
Muma straightened. “Not sure. Let me try.” She held a hand out straight. A pink ball formed in her hand and released, shooting across the tall grass. She lifted her hand, commanding the ball to shoot up straight. “Looks good to me,” Muma said.
“That’s good,” Sato said. He looked up at the ball flying in the sky as Muma controlled it. “Hey, watch out for that bird!”
A squawk broke the silence of the wilderness and the bird dropped to the ground. Muma looked slowly at Sato, scratching her cheek. “So, how do you like your poultry? That one looks well done.”
Sato covered his face with his hand. “Okay, help me up. We have to get back to the others.”
Muma hooked an arm under Sato’s and pulled him to his feet. His back panged with pain, but he dealt with it as they both made their way back to the Jibushi residence.

“Don’t worry, Kanate,” Ina said, “Otta will be just fine. Let’s just get him inside to rest.”
Kanate nodded. “I know, Ina. Thanks for helping me bring him back.”
Ina and Kanate were Otta’s crutches as they came down from the shrine. Otta was alive, but barely. For once Ina was thankful for the health class she was taking that year.
“I wonder what happened to Grandpa and Sato, though,” Ina said as they reached the house. “They should have been at the shrine.”
“And Muma, right?” Kanate asked. Ina nodded.
Ina opened the door and allowed Kanate and Otta to pass before her. She looked back toward the shrine, almost in tears. “Where are you, Sato?” she said to herself. Something caught her attention from the corner of her eye. She looked passed the stairs to the shrine and saw two figures approaching, one wrapped around the other.
“Sato?” Ina said, her eyes widening.
Kanate looked back. “What did you say?”
“It’s Sato!” Ina cried, racing out into the yard.
Kanate shrugged and helped her brother upstairs.
Ina rushed for Muma and Sato. “Sato, you’re alive. I can’t believe it!” she cried.
Sato looked up at Ina and smiled. “Yeah, I’m alive,” he said weakly.
Ina went to Sato’s side and put his arm around her. Muma smiled at her. “Sati saved my life,” she said. “If he hadn’t taken that hit for me, I’d have been dead. Sati’s pretty resilient.”
Ina placed her head on Sato’s shoulder. “I’m so glad you’re all right.”
Muma released Sato, forcing his weight onto Ina. “Listen Ina,” she said, “take good care of Sati.”
Ina looked at Muma, bewildered. “What do you mean? What’re you going to do?”
Ina’s eyes followed Muma as the newly born succubus walked away. Muma turned her sights back to Ina. “Take care of him, now and forever. I don’t trust anyone more than you to take care of Sati.”
Sato turned his head as far as he could to look at Muma. “Be careful,” he told her.
Muma smiled and nodded. “I’ll do my best to come back alive,” she said, “but no promises, Sati.”
Muma turned away and took several steps forward. She looked up at the sky and smiled, baring her fangs. A vain bulged in her neck as her shirt tore from her body, large bat-like wings expanding more than twice her arm length on either side of her torso.
Ina and Sato gaped at her transformation. She still had her slender, beautiful body, but added on to that were the large wings, a long tail that stretched down from the bottom of her skirt, the fanged teeth, sharp eyes, and pointy ears. She was a true demon now, Sato thought.
Muma bent her legs, her wings pointing up straight. She gave a huge leap, flapping her wings hard, and shot into the air, forcing a gust of wind to the ground that almost took Ina and Sato off their feet.
Sato looked up to the sky, following Muma until she was out of sight. “She’s a girl on a mission now. All we can do is pray that she returns alive, whether she wins or loses.”
“Ina,” said Kanate, placing a hand on Ina’s shoulder.
Ina came from her terrified trance and glanced around. “What is it?”
“I’m going up there,” Kanate said. “I have to make sure my brother’s okay. Will you come with?”
