Chapter 3: Girlfriend or Girl Friend?
Kellen had just come out of the locker room after practice on Monday when someone called his name. He recognized one of the girls from the women's team as she waved at him, but as usual, he could not remember her name.
“Wait up, Kellen!” The girl flung her gym bag over her shoulder and jogged to catch up with him. She had the tan skin and curly dark hair of someone who was half black and half something else, but her eyes were green. She was long-legged and cute and Kellen immediately thought of Eileen Johnson's quest for a long-legged athlete.
“What's up?” Kellen spoke casually, hoping she would introduce herself so he would not have to ask who she was.
The girl fell into step with him. “I saw you at the party on Saturday.”
“You did?” Kellen stared at her. “Are you… um…”
“Gay?” She shook her head with a smile. “No, but I like to go to the GLBTC parties. They don't serve alcohol, so people don't get as weird.”
“You don't mind if girls hit on you?”
“Nah, I'm up front about my orientation and I'll dance with chicks if they ask.” She glanced at him. “So that guy you were with is your boyfriend?”
“Uh… yeah.”
“He's cute.”
“Thanks.”
“I don't know how you find time for a boyfriend. I broke up with mine over the summer and I haven't even had time to look at another guy since then. That party was the first fun thing I've done this year.”
Kellen was not sure how open he wanted to be with this girl, even though she was obviously trying to be friendly. He still did not remember her name. “Zach and I live together,” he said after a moment, “so I get to see him all the time. But we still don't spend a lot of time together because of the practice schedule.”
“It will get worse once the season starts next week,” she told him, “especially when there are away meets. We're gone all weekend, then.”
Kellen nodded. He had looked over the season schedule pretty carefully at the beginning of the year and noted that about half their meets were away. “Yeah, that's gonna be rough. I'm already struggling in some of my classes. I don't know how I'll manage when I'm away all weekend, especially when we leave on a Thursday.”
“Don't worry about that. Most of the professors cut the athletes some slack during the season on when their assignments are due.”
“Really? That's good. Zach helps me a lot, but I won't let him do my homework for me.”
“He's smart like that?”
“Oh yeah,” Kellen nodded. “Zach's really smart.” He smiled self-consciously. “He could have gone to college pretty much anywhere, but he came here to be with me.”
“He did? That's neat.” The girl sighed a little wistfully. “My boyfriend wasn't interested in college at all. He works in the shipping department at a Walmart. I was fine with that, but he seemed to get the idea I was too good for him or something when I left for college. That's why we broke up. Whenever I tried to talk about stuff I was doing at college, he'd act like I was talking down to him and get mad. I didn't think I was, but we just ended up fighting all the time.”
“That's too bad.”
“Yeah.” She scuffed a shoe. “Anyway, I wondered if you would want to come to another party.”
“For what?”
“It's a pre-season kick-off party. We always have one the weekend before the season starts.”
“Just the swim team?”
“Mostly, although other people usually show up. You could bring Zach,” she added tentatively.
Kellen hesitated. Being with Zach around gay people was one thing. Showing up as a couple at a party of mostly straight people made him nervous. “I'll ask him.”
“Ok. Let me give you my phone number so you can call me if you're gonna make it.”
Kellen stopped so he could put down his gym bag and backpack and get out his cell phone. He went to a new entry in the address book and handed her the phone. “Why don't you enter it? It's faster.”
“Sure.” She took his phone and entered her name and number. “There you go.” She handed the phone back. “So give me a call, ok?”
“I will.”
“I'd better get going, then. See you later.” She jogged off.
Kellen watched her trot away and then glanced down at the phone. The entry said Nina Andrews. “That's Nina?” Kellen exclaimed to himself. He looked at Nina's retreating back. “I thought she was someone else.” Chuckling to himself, he shoved his phone back into his pocket, shouldered his gym bag and backpack, and resumed walking.
Unseen behind him and out of earshot, Cole Hathaway watched from the driver's seat of a pale blue compact car parked down the street. He smirked as he looked from Kellen to Nina's disappearing form. “Some loving boyfriend you are!” he sneered quietly. “Hitting on girls whenever you're so-called boyfriend isn't around. You athletes are all the same. A guy is good enough when you just want to get your dick wet and you don't want to hassle with taking a girl out first. I bet Zach doesn't even know.” Smiling smugly, Cole started his car. “I guess I'll just have to tell him.”

Kellen arrived at the apartment to find it filled with the smell of roasting meat and fresh bread. His stomach almost immediately began to growl.
“Please tell me that dinner's almost ready! It smells fantastic!”
Zach grinned at him. “The roast comes out in ten minutes and the rolls only take fifteen minutes to bake.”
“Rolls?” Kellen saw a baking sheet with a dish towel draped over it on the counter. There were little humps under the dish towel. Kellen lifted a corner of the towel and peeked underneath. The smell of fresh yeast wafted off the puffy white rolls. “You made bread?!”
“Yup.”
Kellen stared at him. “How long have you been home?”
“Since noon. My programming instructor was sick so he cancelled class. I decided to make you a nice dinner sort of as a celebration. Swim season starts next week, right?”
“Yeah, it does.” Kellen looked around. Zach had already set the table. He had put on their only nice tablecloth and what he jokingly referred to as their good dishes, mostly because the pieces all matched. There was also a tall candle in a polished pewter holder and wine glasses. “Wow! The table looks really nice.”
“Thanks. Would you open the wine? It's over there.”
Kellen picked up the bottle of red wine. “Cabernet Sauvignon? Where did you get this?”
“Actually, my mom gave it to us when we moved in. I've been saving it for a special occasion.”
“Your mother gave two underage college students a bottle of wine?”
“She's fun like that,” Zach chuckled.
“Apparently.” Kellen rummaged through the utensil drawer until he found the corkscrew. “Of course, we do have a corkscrew, so I guess it makes sense.”
“See?”
Kellen deftly opened the wine and poured a little into one of the glasses to taste it. “I've never been a big wine drinker, but this is nice. It's smooth and not too sweet.”
Zach nodded. “I've always liked Cabernets for that reason.”
Kellen filled both glasses half way and set the bottle on the table. “Is there anything I can do to help?”
“Yes, thanks. There are green beans in that pot on the stove. They need to be drained and put in that serving dish there.”
“Ok.” Kellen liked helping Zach in the kitchen. It was weird, because he had never helped his mother unless she asked him, but whenever he saw Zach cooking, he always wanted to lend a hand, even though he knew very little about cooking. Perhaps it was just because he liked being around Zach. So after putting the green beans on the table with a cover to keep them warm, he helped Zach move the roast to the cutting board. It was a cross rib beef roast, his favorite.
“That needs to rest before it's carved,” Zach said. He had put the rolls in the oven as soon as the roast came out. “We have a few minutes. Let's toast to the beginning of the swim season.” He fetched their wine glasses from the table and handed Kellen his. “To a successful season.” They clinked glasses and sipped the smooth red wine. “I was looking at the schedule,” Zach continued. “It looks like you'll be out of town a lot.”
“Yeah,” Kellen nodded. “About half of the meets are away and we're gone pretty much the whole weekend.”
“I'll miss you,” Zach said simply.
“Me, too.”
“Maybe I should get a part time job grading papers or something so I have something to keep me busy when you're away.” Zach sipped his wine. “Otherwise, I might spend all my time thinking about you and jerking off.”
Kellen laughed. “Don't you dare! I heard we get doubled up in rooms and I don't want you jerking off if I can't listen on the phone and jerk off with you.”
Zach blinked at him. “Would you really do that?”
“What? Have phone sex with you?” Kellen leaned toward Zach and grinned lecherously. “In a heartbeat. I'll have sex with you anyway I can.”
Zach drew in a ragged breath. “I should be mashing the potatoes.”
“Should I carve the roast?”
“Go ahead.”
They finished preparing dinner together. Zach mashed the potatoes into creamy, buttery mounds and scooped them into a bowl for serving. Kellen skillfully carved the roast into neat slices and arranged them artfully on a serving platter. Then Zach removed the rolls from the oven and placed them in a bread basket. Once everything was on the table, he lit the candle and turned off the overhead light in the kitchen. With just the lamp in the living room and the candle, the little dining table became a romantic setting.
“This is nice.” Kellen held up his wine glass. “How about one more toast before we eat?”
“Sure.” Zach picked up his glass.
“To us,” Kellen said solemnly.
Zach blinked. “To us,” he echoed.
They clinked their glasses together and sipped the wine while looking at each other. Then Kellen put his glass down and began serving himself.
“This is fantastic, Zach! You've really gone all out.”
“Thanks. I wanted to treat you to something special.”
The food was excellent and Kellen stuffed himself. He simply loved Zach's cooking. Even though he knew perfectly well there should have been enough for leftovers, he ate everything that Zach did not. Then he sat back with a contented sigh.
“Oh, man, that was good! I feel great.”
“Do you have room for dessert?”
“Tell me you didn't make a pie.”
“I didn't make a pie. I made Chocolate Mousse.”
“You're kidding!”
“Nope.” Zach went to the refrigerator and produced two wine glasses filled with the frothy chocolate confection. “What do you think?”
“I think I fell in love with the right guy.”
Zach blushed. He did not say anything as he set a dessert in front of Kellen. He took his own seat and looked at Kellen with a shy smile. “I hope you like it. I've never tried to make this before.”
Kellen dipped his spoon in. The mousse was light as a feather and simply melted on his tongue. He closed his eyes with a sigh. “Oh, that's nice! Really nice!” He proceeded to eat the entire thing happily.
Zach ate his own dessert with a happy smile on his face.
When Kellen finished, he sat back with a long sigh. “Oh, man! I shouldn't eat so much. But that was really good.” He pushed away from the table. “Do you mind if I sit in front of the TV for a few minutes before I help you clean up? I need to let my stomach settle a little.”
“No problem. It's not like there are leftovers to put away.”
Kellen chuckled. “I did eat pretty much everything, didn't I?”
“There are still flowers embossed on the plates.”
“Wretch.”
They moved to the couch and Kellen turned the TV on. Zach snuggled against his side and Kellen put an arm around him. Zach smelled faintly of yeast. It was such a homey and comfortable scent. Without really thinking about it, Kellen tipped Zach's chin up and kissed him.
“Mmmm…” Zach moaned. “We're supposed to be relaxing.”
“I am,” Kellen replied. He kissed Zach again. “I find this very relaxing.”
“Well, it's getting me excited.”
“Is it?” Kellen kept kissing Zach, moving from his lips, to his jaw, his ear and finally his neck.
Zach groaned. “This is not relaxing, Kellen!”
Kellen slid his hand under Zach's shirt and teased his nipple. “Really?”
“Argh! You're just asking for it, you know that!”
“Am I really?”
“That's it!” Zach pushed Kellen over onto his back and climbed on top of him. “You are so getting fucked! All this talk of relaxing was just a ploy! I see that now!”
“You brute!”
“Shut up and take your pants off. I'm not putting up with this abuse.”
Kellen laughed as he unsnapped and unzipped his jeans. Zach yanked them down, followed by his boxers, exposing Kellen's shapely legs and ass. His burgeoning erection betrayed his growing excitement.
“Aha!” Zach exclaimed. “You planned this all along!”
“Who, me?”
Zach stripped out of his jeans and boxers in no time. He pushed Kellen's legs apart and crawled between them.
“What, no lube?”
“You get spit and you'll be happy about it!” Zach wet his fingers in his mouth and shoved them into Kellen's ass.
Kellen arched his back with a groan of pleasure. It was just ridiculous how much he liked getting fingered, but the fingering was just the precursor to getting Zach's cock up his ass. Thinking about that brought his penis to full erection. Zach did not make him wait long. He took his fingers out and moved into position, working his hips up and down until his penis engaged Kellen's anus. Then he thrust forward. Kellen gasped with pleasure. Being with Zach filled him with such joy he did not know how to contain it. He cried aloud, clutching Zach's shoulders as he moved with him. He wanted all of Zach's cock inside him and he lifted up, thrusting his hips up against Zach's driving downward thrusts so he could take it all the way to the root. Over and over, they thrust and ground against each other until Kellen was writhing helplessly. Orgasm was a blistering wave of ecstasy that left him gasping for breath. Zach collapsed on top of him, breathing hard.
“That was great!” Kellen wheezed.
“Yeah,” Zach groaned.
They lay together for several minutes, until their heartbeats had slowed to something approaching normal.
“There's a little more wine,” Zach said at length.
“Sounds good.”
Zach pulled out and padded to the table to pour the last of the wine into their glasses. “I really am going to miss you when you're away.”
“I know.” Kellen sat up and accepted his glass from Zach. “I don't really like the idea of being away from you either, but that's the way the schedule is.”
“It also means I can't watch all your meets.” Zach sank down on the couch with a sigh. “That's kind of disappointing.”
“I guess we'll get used to it.”
“Yeah.” Zach sipped his wine.
Kellen glanced at him out of the corner of his eye and tried to keep his voice casual. “So, I got invited to a party this weekend. It's sort of a season kick-off. Do you want to go?”
“With all your swim team buddies?” Zach made a face. “Quite honestly and no offense, but hanging around a bunch of jocks gives me a headache. I'll go if you really want me to…”
“That's ok. I suspect it won't be as much fun as the GLBTC party anyway. But are you sure you don't mind staying home alone? I don't know how late I'll be.”
“That's all right. I have to write a program anyway. It's due Sunday at midnight, so I can plan on writing it while you're out.”
“Ok. I'll call you if it looks like I'll be out past midnight.”
“Ok.”
Kellen swallowed the last of his wine and stared at the TV. In a lot of ways, his life was perfect. He got to live with someone that he loved dearly and he got to participate in a sport that he truly enjoyed. His classes and homework were about the only dark spot he had to contend with. Which was why he kept wondering what else was going to go wrong. He could not possibly be this fortunate all the time.

Cole's distaste for athletes meant that he knew very few socially, but he did have a couple of friends on the track team who were also political science majors like him. One of them, Janine Harders, was something of a fag hag, so Cole sometimes found her useful when he wanted to know what was going on among the jocks. Since track season did not start until spring, he knew he could find her in the library. If she was not training, she was there. He took the stairs up to the third floor where most of the study tables were and was not surprised to find her seated there, books and papers spread out on the table in front of her.
“Hey, Janine, got a minute?”
“Cole!” Janine smiled broadly. “I haven't seen you since school started. What's up?”
Cole took the seat next to her and lowered his voice. “Do you know anyone on the swim team?”
“A couple people. Why?”
“There's a freshman I'm curious about. His name's Kellen Tarrow.”
Janine grinned. “Since when did you start hitting on freshman, Cole? And an athlete at that. I didn't think that was your style.”
Cole made a face. “I'm not interested in him. He's dating somebody I've got my eye on and I think he's leading him on.”
“Really?” Janine tapped her pencil on the desk. “What makes you think that?”
“I just don't think he's really gay, that's all.”
Janine had to stifle a laugh. “What? I don't know a whole lot of guys who pretend they're gay, Cole.”
“He's getting free room and board out of it. I did a little checking. The guy I'm interested in, his parents pay for the apartment they live in and they probably pay for all the food, too.” Cole leaned closer and lowered his voice a little more. “This Kellen guy gets a free room, food and sex whenever he wants it. What guy wouldn't pretend to be gay for such a sweet deal?”
“What makes you think he isn't gay?”
“I can just tell,” Cole said with a smug expression. “Besides, today I saw him hitting on some girl from the swim team. He'll probably be at their kickoff party on Saturday. I just need for someone to catch him in the act so I can make his boyfriend see how he's being used.”
Janine smirked. “So you can step in as his savoir and take him to bed to comfort him?”
“I'm not that low,” Cole said with a frown.
“Well, I can ask around and see if anyone's going,” Janine said. “But what are you going to do if it turns out you're wrong?”
“I'm not wrong,” Cole said firmly. “I know his type. I just don't want Zach to be hurt. Most gays know better than to get romantically involved with straight people, but there's always that first time.”
“If you're sure,” Janine said doubtfully. “I do know one girl who will probably be there. She's not on the team, but she's dating one of the swimmers, so I'm sure she'll go. I'll ask her to check it out.”
“Thanks, Janine.” Cole smiled. “I knew I could count on you.”
