- Chapter 2 : People From Beneath -

<< I've been walking for days now; doesn't this field ever end? >>
For the past five days, Michael had been continuously walking, with almost no break at all, on a completely empty field. No trees, no buildings, not even animals. Once in a while he could see a flock of birds passing by, but that was about it.
<< But I guess it's not that bad after all. A bit of silence was exactly what I needed; away from all the city fuss. I wish I could've brought Sparky with me though. It would've been more fun if I had my faithful dog with me. Anyway, I don't have time to think about these things. I'll have to find shelter quick. It looks like a storm is approaching. Oh, a forest! How lucky of me! Ok, now I feel like I'm in a bad movie… >>
Twenty minutes later, Michael arrived at the edge of the forest that he spotted where he stopped to look around. The inside of the forest seemed to be quite dark. He pulled out a torch and lighted it with a lighter that used to belong to his father. He then stepped into the woods.
<< I must find a suitable place for me to set my tent in. But with so may trees it's not going to be easy. >>
After an hour's walk through the dark woods, he finally found a clear spot appropriate for his tent. But drops of water already started falling from the sky so he had to hurry. He quickly installed it and entered it right before the rain started pouring heavily over the forest.
<< This is much better. It's not even as cold as I thought it will be. I think I'll stay here for a couple of days before I continue my journey. I could use some rest. I'll just go to sleep now… >>
And he quietly fell asleep while listening to the calming sound of raindrops hitting against the tent…

*

Suddenly, a loud, cracking sound awoke Michael from his sleep…
<< What the hell was that? I thought I was alone in this forest. Maybe it was just an animal… >>
He heard the crack again, but this time even louder.
<< Or maybe a big animal… >>
He then started hearing whispers.
<< Animals don't whisper to each other! >>
Michael quickly grabbed his bow from his backpack, mounted an arrow on it and pointed it towards the tent's entrance.
<< Come if you dare! >>
He stood there waiting but nothing happened.
“Show yourselves!”
Again, he waiting for a couple of minutes during which absolutely nothing happened.
<< Maybe they left… >>
He put his bow down thinking he was safe but suddenly the entire tent fell through the ground along with him. Michael started screaming desperately, being completely confused about what was going on, as he continuously fell towards an unknown destination. As he finally landed on solid ground, Michael became unconscious.
Several hours later he woke up with a terrible headache which was probably caused by the impact on the ground. When he opened his eyes, he immediately realized he wasn't in his tent anymore. Instead, he was underground. He seemed to be in a tunnel lighted by several torches on the walls which he recognized as his own.
Michael stood up only too see two men dressed in silver robes and with red paint around their eyes sitting around a fire and staring curiously at him.
“Who are you, guys?” asked Michael.
The two men looked at each other and then back at Michael but said nothing.
“I asked who are you!”
Finally, on of them said something to Michael.
“Waka ki dira hei?”
“Huh? What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
The men realized they couldn't communicate with the boy, so one of them threw a bunch of red flowers to Michael and told him through signs to smell them.
“Alright. I'll play your game.”
Michael slowly grabbed the flowers from the ground and smelled them, just like the strange man told him to.
<< Such … beautiful …perf- >>
Michael went back to being unconscious.
