“Geesh, Duke, you look like you just had sex and found out that she was beyond ugly!” That same voice giggled at him, the bed dipping with the added weight.

Duke's head shot up and his mouth hung open slightly. His whole body froze except his eyes that slowly grew in size. When he spoke, his voice was raspy and low in a whisper, as if he spoke to loud, everything would disappear.

“Pagan?”

-------

“Well, gosh, I wasn't gone that long, Duke.” Pagan pouted slightly, crossing her arms underneath her breasts.

Duke could hardly believe that she was sitting there in front of him. She was wearing that same sundress that she wore on the day she died, but there was no cuts, no blood, no rips in it, unlike when he had to see her after she died. She was the same ole' beautiful Pagan he remembered, only better.

She had wings.

“You're…an angel?” Duke hesitantly whispered, blinking a few times. It suited her; he always knew that she was an angel.

“Yup. I was surprised, too! I thought He got it wrong.” She giggled as she played with the ends of her dress.

All of a sudden, Duke pulled his blankets and laid back down, pulling the blankets over his head. He curled up into a ball and slammed his eyes shut.

Pagan crawled up to him and poked his sides, causing him to squeal softly.

“Uh, what are you doing, Duke?”

“I know I'm sleeping. I just know it. I'm going to pull the blankets off of my head and you're going to be gone.” He mumbled, closing his eyes tightly. He prayed that this wasn't a dream but then again; he prayed that it was. No one would ever believe him. They'd just mark him off as insane.

Slowly, he pulled the blankets off of his head and sat up, scanning the room. So it was just a dream, she wasn't there anymore.

Sighing again, he ran a hand down his face. That had to be the weirdest dream he had in a while. It really was a shame that it wasn't real. He missed Pagan.

“So are you going to believe me now?” Pagan poked her head up from the end off the bed and pouted. “I'm really here. And you've got to help me.”

“Okay, I'm insane.” Duke said, poking Pagan in the arm.

“Ow!” Pagan yipped when Duke pinched her. “Don't pinch me! I might be dead, but I can still feel.” She said as she smacked him over the head.

“I'm just making sure I'm not dreaming,” Mumbled the black haired boy as he rubbed his head.

“You're supposed to pinch yourself not me!”

“Hah, but it was funner to do it to you.” Duke grinned.

“Funner still isn't a word.”

“Shut up.”

“Neverrr!” Pagan giggled as she jumped on him, forcing him to fall back into a laying position.

Duke stared up at her, amazed how real she felt. He couldn't get over how beautiful she was. Hesitantly, he lifted a hand and rubbed his knuckles on her cheek. “Pagan…” Slowly, Duke lifted his head and ever so softly, brushed his lips against hers.

In a flash, Duke's arms were empty and Pagan was sitting on the other side of the bed, holding her chest.

“Pagan?”

“No, Duke.” She responded, looking down.

“But…what was that about? I'm sorry if you don't -” Pagan cut off Duke by raising her hand.

“Not now, Duke. Please.”

Duke sighed once more but nodded his head. “Can I ask you something, though?”

“Sure, go right ahead, buddy.” Pagan grinned up at him.

“Will you stay the night with me? Like the old times?” He asked in a whisper, looking down at his lap.

Pagan's eyes grew slightly as she heard his question. Slowly, she crawled over to him and placed herself in his lap, her head resting against his collar bone.

“Of course I will,” Pagan mumbled against him, making his heart race, “I'd do anything for you.”

Duke smiled softly as he lay down with her and spooned next to her, holding Pagan close to his body. Finally things were starting to feel right again.

“Don't ever leave me again…Pagan,”

“I can't promise that,” She whispered back.

“How long?” Duke whispered into her back, closing his eyes.

“Huh? I can't promise that at all, Duke.” Pagan turned her neck and glared at him.

“Not what I meant. How long are you…staying?”

Pagan fell quiet for a moment or two; though it did feel much longer to Duke. Why was she hesitating with the answer? Was he not going to like it?

Duke licked his lips before speaking again, “Look, if I'm not going to like it, then…” He stopped. Pagan had turned around and now was facing him.

“No, I don't think you are going to like the answer much. I only can stay while the sun is set.” She answered.

“But why?” Duke asked softly.

Pagan smiled softly up at him. “I'll tell you sometime later, okay?”

Duke paused slightly before narrowing his eyes. “Does that mean you are coming back?”

Pagan giggled and tapped his nose. “Why yes, sir! It does mean that. I did say that I needed your help, remember?”

Duke `oh'ed and nodded. “Are you coming back tomorrow?”

“When the sun sets, yes.”

“Good.”

Pagan sighed and closed her eyes, snuggling up close to him. Duke smiled and closed his eyes, happy that his angel was finally back with him.

“Pagan?” Duke asked, opening his eyes to stare at her.

“Hmmm?” She mumbled back, keeping her eyes closed.

“Promise me something?”

“Depends,” She answered, opening her eyes to look at him with a curious look.

“Promise me that you'll come back every night.”

“Until I need to go, yes.”

That answer would work for Duke. He'd just have to make sure that she never needed to go away. He'd never need her to go, anyway.

“Man, Duke seemed pretty upset.”

“Yeah, I know.”

“Do you think we are going to be caught?”

“No, we aren't going to be caught.”

“Did we do the right thing?”

“Paggie deserved it.”

“Did she really? I mean, what…what did she do that was so bad?”

“Shit, man. Are you becoming a fucking pussy or what?”

“No! I mean…I'm just thinking about it all, you know?”

“Well you better fuckin' stop.”

“Okay.”

“No way I'm letting you screw this up.

“Okay.”

“No one will ever suspect us if we just remain calm, okay?”

“Okay.”

“Good, you better not fuck up.”

“I won't…”

Pagan stayed awake as Duke slowly drifted off into slumber. She wasn't ready for all of this; why did God give her such a mission? Who cared if every angel had to do this? Pagan would much rather just silently watch over the boy who had his arms around her than drag him into all of this. He deserved so much more.

“Duke, I'm sorry.” Pagan whispered softly, kissing his forehead.

“Don't be. Everything will be okay now that I'm going to be seeing you.” Duke mumbled back, keeping his eyes shut as sleep began to pull him back into another dream.

“You are awake?” She whispered, pushing some hair off of his forehead.

“Barely…”

“Go to bed. Get some sleep. You've got school tomorrow,” She paused as she took in a deep breath and glared at him, “And don't you ever skip school again, mister!”

“Anything you say…Pag. Anything,” He whispered softly, hugging her closer to him.

“Good,” Pagan smiled.

“I miss you so much, Pagan,” Duke whispered as he slowly fell back into the dream world.

The angel frowned slightly as she heard this. No, this wasn't going to work anymore. “Duke, listen to me, you need to move on. I'm…I'm not good enough for you anymore.”

“I've never been good enough for you, Duke. Never.”
