Bar Girls
A new bar opened up around Christmas. It's for ladies only. They
are looking for new hires. All of the women in Moscow lined up at
the doors. Even Mai wanted to check it out. Takako gave her a funny
look.
“Why do you want to go to a bar?” she asked. Her sister grinned at
her.
“But it's all girls,” she said. “Plus, we could use some extra
cash.”
“And?” Takako said. Mai grabbed her by the hand.
“Come on,” she said. “It could be fun. We just have to apply. We
might not get the job.” Takako gave her a strange look. The younger
sister wasn't going to back down. The older sister sighed and
dropped her shoulders.
“Fine,” she said. “We can check it out.” Mai squealed and hugged
her wildly.
“Yay! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” she said. Takako rolled her
eyes.
“Right…” she said. She would have to humor her for now.
----------
The bar was called Powder Dreams. It wasn't the best but they were
going to make up for it with everything else. First, they needed
staff members. The girls had to be skilled, witty, good with social
skills, and really pretty. Age didn't matter in this case.
The owners were surprised to get so many application on the first
day.
“Where do we even start?” Olga asked. Her partner looked through a
fresh stack.
“Do you want to go by age or experience first?” she asked. Olga
turned to her.
“Which one do you prefer?” she asked. Her partner took a moment to
think.
“I'm fond of experience myself,” she said. She sat down at the
table next to Olga. It took work to sort out the ones they wanted
and the other they didn't. In the end, they came down to ten
applicants on day one. Olga breathed out as she looked at the last
application.
“Welcome ladies,” she said. “We will give you a call back.”
“I'm on it,” her partner said. She picked up the phone.
------------
“Are you sure you want to do this?” Nikkita asked.
“Yeah,” Mai said as she looked at her long black skirt and white
blouse in the mirror. She picked up a tube of dark red
lipstick.
“But why?” he asked.
“I'm bored,” his wife complained.
“Then join a book club or something,” Nikkita said. “You don't need
to work. I'm the one providing here.” Mai whipped her head around
and gave him a cross look. Her husband quickly closed his mouth.
She turned back to the mirror and put on the lipstick.
“Are you going to stop me?” Mai asked. The man stared at her for a
few seconds before he closed his mouth. Mai giggled to herself as
she closed up her lipstick. Suddenly, her phone rang.
“I got it!” she said. The woman dashed over to the phone and picked
it up.
“Hello?” Mai asked. Her call didn't last long. Her eyes lit up as
she smiled.
“When?” she asked. Nikkita looked confused as his wife went on
happily chatting.
“Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Uh-huh,” his wife kept saying. “Sure, I can be
there now. I will see you soon.” Mai turned around as she hung up
the phone. She turned to see Nikkita staring at her. She grinned as
she held up her phone.
“I've been selected for a trial run at the Powder Dreams!” Mai
said. She jumped up and down and twirled around. Nikkita forced
himself to smile as he gave her a little clap.
“That's great, I guess,” he said. “When do you start?” His wife
broke into a huge grin as she flashed two V-signs.
“Tonight,” she said. “Takako, Shasha, and Kirsa are going to be
there too.”
