Chapter 2
The message was taunting him. His imagination was painting elaborate scenario's detailing other men with his ex-love. He stared at the floor deleriously with quivering hands.
"But if he wants me back, why wouldn't he just say so...?" Mumbled Jeremy. This had to be a joke. Why would Simon have such a quick change of heart?
Before Jeremy had time to think that thought thoroughly, he was interrupted once more. The door clicked three times in quick succession and by the tone of the knocking, he could tell it was with their knuckles. After a moment of indecision, Jeremy decided that he didn't want to talk to anyone at the moment.
Unfortunately, his answering machine had other ideas- finishing with a loud, "End of messages." Beep.
The knocking at the door continued and Jeremy decided that he should just answer it. He started padding to the door, and as the silhouette took shape, his eyes grew wider with every step.
Jeremy opened the door and he couldn't help asking, "Derek?" He didn't understand why Derik was at his house, especially since they were going to have his housewarming party at his apartment. In four days. Jeremy rolled his eyes but was taken offguard when he was taken into Derek's arms in a breathless bear hug.
Confusion seemed to be chasing jeremy today and after wheezing out a put-me-down, "Keh," he was released and stared at his old friend with a confused and slightly wanting look(that went unnoticed- as always). After catching his breath, Jeremy decided to ask Derek the only thing he wanted to know at the moment. "Why are you here?"
Derek returned Jeremy's look with his own apologetic smile and slightly embarrassed blush. "Hey, man. Uh... sorry about the hug, but I didn't know you and Simon broke up," My heart sank deep in my chest at the mention of him. "...and I just wanted to come by and see if I could make it up to you somehow for being a total dork."
Derek had always been there for Jeremy. When Jeremy told him he was gay in ninth grade, he just smiled and said, "Cool, you're my first, official, gay friend!" without any unease or discomfort. He was always talking to him in public, though it was frowned upon by the rest of the baseball team. And he continued treating him as a normal person, as opposed to some of his other friends that, upon hearing the 'news', became overly masculine and callous in his presence. They always had a way of making him feel unwelcome... dirty.
"Well... Lets see..." Jeremy dramatically tapped his chin and stared at the ceiling as if in deep thought, wearing a playful smirk. "You could make a fool of yourself by running naked through town." At this, he looked into Dereks eyes, seeing that his sarcasm hadn't gone unnoticed. "Aww, what? You don't like that one?" Jeremy stuck out his tungue. "How about- you pay for a movie? I'm thinkin'... An oldie! How's The Count of Monte Christo sound to you?"
Derek smiled and made a show of thinking. "I don't know... You know I'm more of an 'Action' guy."
Jeremy looked at Derek with a smile that simply said, 'You just said something dirty.' and said "Well, you see. About that- now that I think about it, a game seems to be the way to go..." Cracking a nervous smile, Jeremy left Derek standing in the doorway since he'd been to his house enough times to know how Jeremy did things. Derek reached behind him and with a flick of his wrist, shut the door. Then proceeded to the entertainment room- which was really just a room that had an old couch and a PS2 in it- where he found Jeremy shifting through the small collection of games to find their usual fighter game- "Ultima Fighter 3". And, as simply as that, they started yelling at the T.V. and nudging eachother with their elbows.
All of a sudden, Jeremy stopped playing. He rose out of his seat and drifted out of the room, as if in a trance. Derek could hear some light sounds and a couple thuds but didn't understand why Jeremy had left so suddenly. After staring at the paused screan for what seemed like forever, Derek got up and stretched a little. It was then that Jeremy decided to come back. With two sodas in his hands. Derek understood and sat back down, grabbing his usual beverage.
The game began again, but neither of them really enjoyed it that much after the break. So Derek decided to stop yelling- which had gone down in intensity after Jeremy left- and state his feelings. "Dude, this game sucks balls."
Jeremy turned his head towards Derek, who was already looking at him, and became a deep shade of tomato. He'd been there. And that phrase was suddenly more meaningful to him.
Derek looked at Jeremy in a mild state of confusion. He thought he knew what Jeremy was so embarrased about since he hadn't said that before in his company, for risk of being offensive, but decided to shoot into the wind and see what it got him. Apparently, something funny... no wait- that looks a little scary... painful, maybe? Derek stared at Jeremy as he started to convulse. Still completely unsure of which it was. Then Jeremy let out a shrill cry- seeming to be more of the laughing persuasion- and fell the the floor and started rolling back and forth.
"Okay, man. It's not that funny." But Jeremy couldn't hear past the pounding in his ears. That one phrase hurt, while at the same time was funny, but slightly horrifying. So he decided to cut Derek some slack and tell him it's not his fault.
"...Nadda..." Laughing was making it hard to talk coherently. "...Calm... Dan..."
Derek had no clue what he was supposed to do. He went to Jeremy's side on the floor and kneeled. Jeremy looked up with bleary eyes and tried again. "... Come... Down..."
Derek was at a loss. He didn't know why Jeremy wanted him to come down to him since he could see that he was sitting on the floor next to him. He decided it didn't matter, so he leaned his head forward more so it would be easier to hear what his mumbling friend was talking about.
Unfortunately for Derek, Jeremy noticed his movement and took it as an advance from him. This was so shocking it made him stop laughing, and the moment he stopped, Derek looked into his eyes for an answer. To Jeremy though, the look had an alternate meaning- "Did you just turn me down?"
Eyes searched eachother for a minute before shifting away and leaving Jeremy the victor. He felt bad about- however minor it might be- rejecting his friend. So he jumped onto Derek, causing him to fall back onto the floor. The position they were in was the first thing in Jeremy's mind, who was curently straddling Derek and pinning his arms to his side with his knees. However, the first thought in Derek's head was, "Dang, he got a lot stronger. I wonder what gym he goes to..." Causing him to get completely dazed.
The front door opened and closed with two clicks and a thump could be heard from the deadbold being put into place. Steps... and a gasp. "Dangit Germ! I told you to clean up after yourself when you use the kitchen! It's not that hard!"
Jeremy frose when he noticed who the voice belonged to and quickly assesed his current predicament. He scrambled to his feet and rushed Derek up, too. Then they went back to their game as if nothing had happened at all, completely ignoring their newest guest.
A/N: I hope you liked this chapter! And wow, I feel like I should apologize again because, since starting this chapter, I have procrastinated a lot! School just never stays out of my life. Even when I don't want it there. Anyway, Review!
