Chapter 2
A young Koroku Mitzukita walked down the streets of Sintia. He was praying that no one started to talk to him, for he had no family and scorn was directed at him. He was only seventeen at this time, and was currently looking for food.At this same time, Rico Hikari was not feeling himself. He was not, by all means, a caring person. But when he saw Koroku walking down the street, he had an urge to take him under his wing. Casually, he strolled over to Koroku and put an arm around his shoulders. Koroku jumped at the sudden contact.
“Hey, now! I’m not going to hurt you!” Rico said.
“Huh?” Koroku turned and looked into jet-black eyes. This frightened Koroku, but he stood his ground.
“I’ve heard people talk about you. You are Koroku Mitzukita?”
Koroku nodded. “I am. What do you want with me?”
Rico shrugged. “Nothing. It’s just that you don’t have a fairly and I thought you might need someone.”
Koroku cocked an eyebrow. “Say wha?”
Rico shook his head and looked again at Koroku. “Never mind. Why don’t you come live with me for awhile? I’m sure that you don’t have a completely decent place to live?”
Having nothing else to do, Koroku agreed. But somewhere in the back of his mind, something was telling him that this was a bad idea. Putting his arm around Koroku’s shoulder, Rico steered him towards his house. As they entered, Koroku looked around in awe.
Rico Hikari’s house was very large and many objects were displayed in glass cases along the wall. The smell of food and tea wafted to Koroku, and he inhaled deeply.
“Are you hungry?” Rico asked. Koroku’s head went up and down automatically.
Four hours later, Koroku was lying in bed.
‘A real bed.’ Koroku thought, pulling the blanket over his head. ‘Maybe I was wrong. Maybe Rico isn’t such a bad person after all…’
If he only knew.
A year after Koroku was taken in by Rico, his apprenticeship began. He walked down the steps of the house and stopped at the bottom. He could hear Rico’s voice from another room.
“Yes. So you haven’t gotten any news of her? We must find her quickly! She cannot be allowed to live! She is a threat to us!” Rico paused to listen to – Koroku guessed it was a police officer – the person on the other end. “What?! Someone else found her and took her in already?! Damn!”
Koroku’s dark green eyes widened in shock. ‘I know that they mean Kira. Uh. I need to speed up my training!’ he thought frantically.
Koroku rushed as quietly as he could up to his room. He went to his closet and pulled a thick book out. It read: Demons Summoning Book for the Beginner. Koroku flipped to page fifty and looked frantically for a low-level Demon he could summon. He found the incantation for a level three Ice Demon and successfully summoned it. From then on, he practiced day in and day out.
