“Gabriel! Gabriel!” An older angel walked around the blooming garden, calling out the young angel's name over and over again. Gabriel peeked out from behind the tree, he was sitting in, watching the dark-haired angel's back as he scratched his head in confusion and irritation. The young angel giggled silently to himself as the older angel stormed off to look for him. Once Gabriel was sure the angel had gone, he glided down from the tree, landing quietly on the soft ground. He smiled proudly to himself at evading his tutor, and flew off to go find his dear friend, Raphael.
He flew out of the little garden, and out over the white streets of Heaven; he used the clouds as a hiding incase his disappearance was reported by his tutor. He knew there was only one place Raphael would be at a time like this; Gabriel smiled to himself as he continued to fly out of the first Heaven's boundaries, and crossed over to the forth Heaven's boundary to it's own little garden.
Gabriel landed softly on his feet, and began to walk through it vines and bushes, careful not to make a noise, as another angel came into view. He giggled silently to himself, spying Raphael standing at the top of a hill, a canvas in front of him, and very colorful palette in his hand that could change its shades and hues with his command. Gabriel snuck up quietly behind the older archangel, placing his hands over Raphael's eyes. Raphael was startled a moment, before a gentle smile appeared on his face.
“Now who could this be?” Gabriel giggled, not removing his hands.
“Guess who!” Raphael seemed to go into deep thinking, gently tapping the end of his paintbrush against his chin; Gabriel only kept giggling behind him.
“Hmn - Michael? No, he's too serious. Mador? No, he isn't allowed to leave the hall.” Gabriel only giggled louder; he knew Raphael was teasing him, but that's what made him love the older angel all the more.
“Well - if it isn't Michael and it's not Mador, then is must be…” Raphael turned himself around to come face to face with the little blond angel, a wide, beaming smiling on Gabriel's face. “ The young angel, Gabriel!” Raphael gently poked the tip of his brush on Gabriel's tiny nose, leaving a small blue spot on the tip. Gabriel pouted wiping away the paint before it dried.
“Raph! I'm not your canvas!” Raphael turned back to his canvas, hovering his brush over the outstretched surface.
“You can be in my canvas, if you want.” Gabriel smiled and shook his head, sitting himself down on a smooth rock nearby.
“No, I don't want to ruin your picture with my face in it.” Raphael put his brush and palette down for a moment, walking over to where Gabriel was sitting. He gently took the young blond's chin, making Gabriel look up at him.
“You are an angel, Gabe - there isn't a creature alive that has a more beautiful face than yours.” Gabriel smiled sheepishly at him, timidly reaching for his friend's hand with his, his bright blue eyes gazing warmly into slightly darker blue ones. Raphael smiled back at him, slowly pulling his hand out of Gabriel's delicate one, returning back to his canvas. A thought just suddenly struck him.
“Shouldn't you be in tutoring?” Gabriel pouted a little, moving himself to sit on the grassy ground, leaning his arms and head on the rock instead. Raphael glanced back at him from the corner of his eye, expecting that the young blond would answer him soon.
“Well?”
“Yes, but it's so boring. I would rather sit with you and watch you paint.”
“So watching me paint is less boring than listening to a tutor?” Raphael asked, raising a fine thin, dark blond brow.
“At least you talk!” Gabriel answered, resting his head back down on his arms. Raphael only shook his head and sighed. Raphael was much older than Gabriel as far as time was concern, but they were both at the same level of status. Both Raphael and Gabriel were chosen by the first Raphael and Gabriel to take their places once they resigned as Archangels. Though they were both in training, they had very different roles; Gabriel was training to take the place of the messenger, and had to learn how to communicate between the mortals and with God himself; Raphael was training to be a guardian angel, learning how to heal and protect those from afar. However, Gabriel did not find his studies at all interesting like Raphael's was; he had spent many afternoons evading his tutors and spending his time with his dear friend.
“You should take your studies more seriously, Gabriel.” Gabriel pouted at the use of his full name. He was always pestering Raphael to just call him `Gabe', but the older angel didn't see it as appropriate for an archangel, and rarely ever used it. Gabriel glanced in another direction, letting out a sigh.
“I know - but I just don't feel like I'm right for this job.”
“Come now, Gabriel. You were personally chosen by the first Gabriel to take his place when he resigns, same as the first Raphael did with me.”
“Can you just call them `father'? It gets kind of confusing when you use first and stuff.” Raphael turned his head to give the blond a half smile as he sighed. True, in a way they had been adopted by the two Archangels when they were mere mortal children, but it seemed weird to refer to them as their `fathers' when they were not related at all. Raphael turned back to his painting, Gabriel content with just lying there watching him.
“How come you never paint in the gardens of the Second Heaven? Isn't it your domain?”
“It's hard to find something beauty in a place that is full of condemned angels,” Gabriel made a small `oh' noise, leaning his head away. “Besides - Zachariel likes to be a pain and always gets in the way.” Gabriel smiled widely, laughing a little as he continued to talk and watch Raphael paint.
~~~~*~~~~
Raphael sighed contently as he put the last finishing detail to his painting, putting his palette and brush, both which were as if there were never touched, away in his robes. He gazed at it with a serious eye, scanning it for any flaws or details he might have overlooked since Gabriel came and started talking to him. Seeing nothing wrong the painting, waved his hand over it and it disappeared in a second. The low light of the setting sun catching his eyes. He turned around to tell Gabriel it was time to go to their quarters; he found the young angel asleep on the rock he had laid down on. Raphael sighed; he had wondered why Gabriel suddenly became quiet. A gently smiled formed on the older angel's lips, as he carefully scooped the young blond into his arms and flew him to his quarters.
The sun had completely set leaving all of the Heavens lit with thousands of candles, giving the already glowing gardens a holy glow. Raphael slowly glided down to the ground once he reached their quarters, heading towards Gabriel's room to place the young angel in his bed. He carefully spread the blond's wings as he laid him slowly on his bed, pulling the white sheet over Gabriel to keep the draft off.
The older angel sat on the edge of Gabriel's bed, watching him sleep with tender eyes. He reached a gentle hand for the lighter blond's face, brushing his hair out of the way without waking him. Raphael sighed and smiled to himself as he stood from the bed and walked out of Gabriel's room. He waved his hand over the candles and they flickered softly out.
