Uncle Blake didn't seem to mind that I'd run straight outside after he slapped me, he didn't try to stop me even after I started walking further down The Crowbar. Who knew what kind of old drunk was going to scream at me the further I went down that road, but I didn't give a damn. I was running away, I knew exactly where I could go. Uncle Blake knew I'd be back, and deep inside I did too, but I liked to think I was running off forever. I needed some time to myself, and with that man throwing me around I doubt I was going to get it if I didn't leave. Ally would have refused to leave me alone, beg me to tell her what was wrong, so I only had one choice; the woods. I'd get a good beating when I got back, but I could take it, I could take anything.
Jayce Shaw was known for being a tough emotionless bad boy. But at the time, I wasn't feeling much like Jayce Shaw, I felt more like a six- year-old girl, I just wanted to cry. Uncle Blake had torn my entire portfolio in half and scattered the drawings of my beloved Ally and other pictures across the living room. If I got lucky and he didn't use them as fuel to cook himself a fat hamburger, I'd have to tape them all together when I got back, that is, after I was reduced to a pulp. What finally got my mind off the incident was when some fat old lady with a mustache threw a bear bottle out into the street right behind me.
“Damn it Woman, you almost hit that boy!” An old man waved a finger in her face. The woman was laughing aloud, leaning back so I could see the inside of her giant nostrils as I walked by.
“What do you think I was aiming for, you good for nothing pile of rat droppings!” The woman was still laughing as she insulted her husband. He rolled his eyes, waved her off and turned around to go back inside. I just continued walking, acting as though I were still minding my own business as I had been when I had a glass bottle thrown at me. Suddenly another flew past my face and I looked back, there she was, slouched in the wooden chair pointing a finger at me, laughing even harder than before. Now I was just pissed, but managed to keep my cool and stomped forward, quickening my pace. Finally, as the loud, annoying laughter died out, I came to the curve of The Crowbar, the woods was in sight. I began jogging until I came to the edge of the forest where I slowed back to walk.
I trudged threw the patches of grass and twigs and sticks carelessly, kicking anything I could fit the tip of my shoe underneath. I had to pull up my pants every now and then, oh how I wished I'd brought a belt or something. I couldn't think very well when every five minutes I felt that my boxers were showing. I stopped dead in my tracks, hearing the sound of footsteps. It seemed to be coming from behind me so I spun around, scanning the trees for another. I felt my pants falling again, but this time I was unable to catch them, and my boxers fell part way to. I was in shock before I realized that they hadn't fallen, someone had pantsed me! I heard the hysterical laughter of an unfamiliar male voice and whipped around at the same time pulling my pants and boxers back up to my waist.
There was a blond boy, laughing at me about five times harder than that old woman had. I couldn't believe it, I hadn't ever even seen him before and in the middle of the woods he just walks up pantses me. I was just downright out of my mind by this time, and wanted to tackle him down and beat the shit out of him, but that wasn't me, I kept my cool
“What the hell!” I said, still holding the rim of my pants for fear of having it happen again. “Who the hell are you, and what the fuck is your problem?” I screamed at him, taking a step forward. He coughed, catching his breath from all the laughter.
“I'm sorry,” He laughed. “I'm sorry man, but when I see an opportunity I take it. Wear tighter pants next time,” He cracked up a little more, I could just imagine the image of my fat ass crack in his head, I could feel that it was showing after he'd done it. At least it wasn't hypocritical advice, his pants were very tight, his lower half reminded me of Allison's, and I immediately came to the conclusion that he was a fag. That didn't exactly give me a license to destroy him, but everyone knew I didn't like fags, however he may have just been an over dressing prep. Whoever he was I knew I'd never seen him before.
“You ass!” I scowled. He calmed down and sucked in all the laughter, honestly, it couldn't have been that funny.
“Chaz Killroy, pleased to meet your ass crack,” He chuckled and stuck out a hand to me, obviously expecting me to shake it. If he was expecting to make friends he had another thing coming to him, the stupid fag.
“Jayce Shaw, screw off,” I mumbled under my breath.
“Oh I know who you are, I watch you every game, you play football,” He said as I passed him. Great, so not only was he gay, he liked to watch me run around in my stupid skin tight blue pants every other day. “You're really good,” He added. Aw what the hell, if there was anything I knew for sure it was how to take a compliment, and I couldn't help but take one, even from a pantsing fag.
“Thanks,” I said rather half heartedly, continuing to walk away. I half expected him to follow me or something, but I didn't here anything, and when I looked back, he was gone. I looked around behind me, but I didn't see much trace that he was ever there. I turned back around and jumped to the site of a cheesy grin and a tan arm leaning against a tree.
“Out for a walk? Or just running away from home?” He asked, apparently trying to start a conversation. I looked behind me, and then back at him, for a moment wondering how he'd so quickly gotten from on place to the other. I rolled my eyes and started heading back the way I came, he was becoming rather annoying, and I wasn't in a mood to talk.
“Don't leave,” He called to me. I looked back at him, wondering what he could possibly think to say that would make me stay. “I'll pants you again,” He smirked and crossed his arms. I rolled my eyes once again and kept walking. “I'm not kidding, I might run off with `em this time,” He called. I stopped, somehow I was actually curious of this person. For instance, he was my age, but I knew everyone in school so I thought, how come I didn't know him? Maybe he was new or something, or perhaps he just looked my age, maybe he was older.
“What do you want?” I sighed, turning around slowly, my arms hanging at my sides.
“I'm lonely,” He gave me a pouting lip and bent his head down, looking at me with puppy-like blue eyes. I wasn't impressed with his kind of humor, as he was obviously trying to make me laugh. “C'mon, why not come with me down to the gas station, I was just on my way there,” He suggested, shrugging his shoulder with encouragement. “I'll by you a pop or something,” He added.
“You pants me and then you ask me out?” I tilted my head, my eyes widening when I realized how that had come out. He let out a laugh and took a few steps toward me.
“What are you, gay?” He joked. “Not a date stupid, a walk, you know, talk to hot girls, get in a hell of a lot of trouble, it'll be fun,” He said and then turned around to go the other way, seemingly expecting me to follow. I sneered at him, first calling me gay, and then stupid, but somehow I walked forward and caught up with him. It did sound rather fun, and maybe it would get my mind off things. I'd really never seen anyone so comfortable around a complete stranger, not where I lived anyway, he seemed pretty cool.
“Don't feel bad, no one can resist me,” He said as soon as he noticed that I was walking close behind him. I wanted to punch him in the shoulder like I did my other friends when they were being jerk offs, but I didn't know him well enough.
“So, Chaz, where do you live?” I asked him. “I live on The Crowbar,” I added. He shrugged and picked up his pace a bit. “Nowhere,” He replied. Apparently he wasn't going to tell me where he lived, guess he just didn't trust me yet, but I respected that. I pulled my pants up again, as they were falling and Chaz let out a laugh.
“Honestly, you don't think you're going to get any chicks wearing those,” He implied. So he wasn't a fag, he was a pervert, which I didn't really mind so much.
“Who said I wanted chicks,” I squinted. Of course he just had to make an insult out of everything I said.
“Oh so you are gay, well you ain't gonna get guys with that either, `cause I ain't attracted,” He replied watching me struggle. I wrinkled my nose at him and pulled them up again.
“Shut up, you know that's not what I meant,” I scoffed, trying to hang them on my hips in a way that they would stay up. He was quite the comedian, seemed to make a joke out of everything. He sort of reminded me of Allison, in the way that they both saw me as a great target for poking fun at, or maybe just because I happened to be the only one around.
Chaz came out of the store with one bottle of Pepsi, and one of Dr. Pepper, just like I had asked. He handed me the Dr. Pepper and sat down at the table leaning back in his chair, resting his feet on the table coolly, and taking a drink.
“Hey look,” He smirked. “It's a few of my favorite things,” He was looking into the distance, behind me. I turned around to see a group of skinny teenage girls, laughing and giggling on the street corner.
“You know them?” I asked. Chaz wiped his face off and put the Pepsi down, taking his feet off, his eyes ever leaving the group of girls.
“Couple of `em,” he said standing up. “Come on, I'll introduce you,” He said, urging me to stand up as well. I was hesitant but I got up from the seat and followed him. I didn't plan on getting to close to any of them of course, but it didn't hurt to have a few more friends.
“Hey Chazzie,” One of them said, placing a hand on her hip. “Who's your friend,” She asked, putting the antennae of her cell phone between her teeth and looking me up and down.
“Jayce Shaw, I found him stumbling around the woods, thought he'd like to see some boobies,” Chaz joked. I backed away, my eyes wide in confusion, if I ever said that to a girl, I'd get slapped. But these four just giggled at him, well three of them did.
“Why don't you screw off Chaz,” The other said, crossing her arms, not impressed by his vulgar joke.
“Oh come on, Jess, you're just jealous because my man body is more feminine than yours,” He said. Meg rolled her eyes, the others giggled, and Jess groaned. Apparently these girls found him funny, I would've been annoyed by his offensive flirting, or at least pissed off.
“Hey Meg, you seen Ralph lately, they got some other guy in there working the cash register,” Chaz turned to the first girl he'd spoken to, Meg.
“Haven't seen him, then again I don't know him that well. Say, Chaz, you're a sexy boy, me and the girls were looking for some fun, you can bring your buddy,” Meg said. I wanted to call her a whore, or something right then, but apparently it was just the average talk between these five odd people.
“Nice try, but you know I'm a virgin. Not to mention I don't date sluts,” He said, putting a hand under her chin. She smirked and nudged one of her friends, who was probably the most attractive of the group.
“She's a virgin too. Why don't you two graduate together,” She said in a deep, sexy voice. I was just about disgusted, how could Chaz have called these people his friends? He wasn't nearly as bad as these stupid ditsy airheads, even if they were just joking around.
“I appreciate your concern on my personal issues, but I gotta go,” He smiled and turned around, walking passed me and back toward the table.
“Chaz!” The one girl who had been silent the entire time before ran after him. Chaz stopped, smiled and turned back to her, it seemed like he was always smiling.
“My mom wants to know if you would mind walking me to soccer practice? She doesn't want me to go alone, and you know I don't want to spend too much time around the Pussycat Dolls over there,” She asked, sweetly.
“Sure Kess, when you want me to stop by?” He asked, his smile widening. I took a few steps forward, waiting for Chaz to acknowledge that I was still there.
“Four, as usual,” Kessie replied to him. “Have fun with your friend, we're waiting for a ride to the mall,” She waved and began walking back to the group of girls. I approached Chaz again, who just watched Kessie jog back to the little huddle of giggling.
“Those your friends?” I asked incredulously. Chaz looked back at me, fiddling with is necklace in his right hand.
“Not really. Kessie's like my little sister but the rest are just whores that I'll chat with once in a while. Meg's the biggest bisexual slut you've ever seen; her girlfriend Jess just doesn't like me. And the rest just follow those two around like dumb little lost puppies, we got lucky there were only four this time,” He explained as I followed him back to the table and sat down. Thank god he wasn't friends with them, that would be automatic discard for friendship between us.
“I really don't have any friends, call me a loser, but I like being a loner,” He took another drink of Pepsi and capped the bottle, setting it on the table and reading the label. He seemed really popular to me, and despite the bad first impression I kind of wanted to be his friend, but I suppose he was just that much cooler than me. He was too, he was funny, and it seemed like with his charm he could get away with anything, he didn't seem to have any pride for himself what so ever, and I admired that. I guess people like that can go around calling anyone they want their friend, and it'll be accepted.
Suddenly my phone rang and I quickly pulled it out and flipped it open, it was Ally.
“Hey,” I said cheerfully as Chaz watched me.
“Hey, look behind you across the street,” Ally said. I was confused but did exactly as she said. I turned to see her smiling face and an arm in the air waving to me. I smiled and waved back, signaling her to come over. I flipped shut my phone and sat back down, looking back and watching her as she ran across the street, just dodging a moving car. I looked at Chaz, he was all eyes for her, I glared but he didn't seem to notice.
“Hey Jayce, who's your friend?” She sat down next to me, breathing heavily as I offered her a sip of Dr. Pepper. She accepted it and sat down on the edge of the table on the opposite side of both of us.
“Chaz Killroy,” He smiled and stuck out a hand before I could say a word. I was getting jealous, but I had to keep in mind that she wasn't mine, and that it seemed Chaz was just naturally a flirt. I'd never been a very reactive type, so I just sat tight, not even letting myself clench a fist under the table.
“Allison Robins, pleased to meet you,” She smiled humorously, perhaps because of their somewhat old fashion introduction. “So how'd a nice guy like you end up with this scum here,” She joked as she put a hand on his head to scruff up my hair, I couldn't help but smile, everything she did made me smile.
“I might ask you the same question,” Chaz replied, adding to the insult against me. “I found him walking alone in the middle of the woods, unable to keep himself fully dressed,” He said. Allison giggled and looked at me in question.
“He pantsed me,” I said grudgingly, crossing my arms.
Ally's jaw dropped and she laughed, turning to Chaz, and he nodded. “I'm guilty,” He confessed as he unscrewed the cap on the Pepsi. “You're not still sore at me for that are you Jaycee?” He asked.
“Jaycee?” I scowled at him, one thing I didn't want was guys giving me cute nicknames, my name was Jayce. I'd spoken rather quiet and neither of them seemed to notice I'd answer, they were whispering to each other. When it came to me that they were talking about me I slouched, after all whom else would they be talking about. When Chaz let out a laugh I couldn't help but wonder what she'd told him.
“You're an artist, eh?” Chaz asked with a smirk. I nodded in confusion, what was funny about that? There had to be something more. “Hm, I'll have to see some of your work sometime, are you good?” He asked with another drink from his bottle.
“I guess. But my Uncle took my portfolio, he's probably shredding them all by now,” I said, twiddling my thumbs sadly. I don't know how long it had taken me to do all those, and how much of my life I'd put into it.
“Oh my god,” Allison's eyes were wide with shock. “He didn't! Is that why you were out in the woods again?” She asked, leaning over the table and putting her hand on both of mine, squeezing them together. “I'm so sorry, were they all in there,” She asked caringly. I didn't want to think about it, she was being over reactive about it anyway, it didn't matter to me enough to want anyone to feel sorry for me.
“Oh come on, don't get all sappy in front of me, they're just drawings. It's not like any of them were of me,” Chaz said as he took another drink. Maybe he did have pride, maybe he had too much for his own good, and once again I found myself wanting to punch him. He was just that type of person though, the type of person you want to kill, but you just can't unless you're insane, like a lost puppy that tore up your garden.
“You think you're really something don't you?” I squinted at him. He chuckled and set the empty bottle down, stretching his arms out behind his head coolly.
“I try,” He said. There was a pause, but the sound of jingling broke the silence. All three of us looked to a field across the street to see a black, furry, floppy-eared dog running toward us. I took immediate action due to the terror I felt as the animal came running straight for me! I sprung from my seat a backed away, wanting to run, but Allison had simply stood up and Chaz was leaning over clapping his hands as if calling the dog to him. I would've looked like an idiot if I didn't already.
“Hey girl,” He said as she dropped a black, muddy, leash at his feet. “Charcoal, meet Jayce Shaw, and Allison Robins,” He said to the dog, pointing us out as he introduced. The dog let out a whine and put a paw on his leg, followed by a short, sharp bark. “Yeah she's cute, but, don't worry baby, you're still the only woman in my life,” He said, scratching the dog behind it's ears. I couldn't help but notice he was referring to Ally when he said `cute' I scowled at him from behind, what a loser, it seemed his best friend was his dog. Ally simply giggled at the remark as Chaz sweet-talked Charcoal, holding her paws and swinging her around as she tried to bite his hands so he'd let go.
“You brought the leash?” He picked it up. “Is this the leash? You wanna go for a walk, do you girl?” He said in an enthusiastic but completely cheesy manner. I didn't like him, but I did, I didn't because he was exactly the type of person Allison would've liked, and I did just because he was so likeable. I was jealous of him I suppose, the way he'd already caught her attention, it wasn't an easy thing to do, and Chaz didn't put any effort into it what so ever so it seemed.
He was nice, he was charming, and from what I'd seen he was brutally honest. Maybe a little too big for his pockets, but he was the exact type of person I would have wanted to be, but it just wasn't me; then again, that's another think I liked about him. I watched him as he pet his dog, I couldn't blame her for liking the whole `boy and his dog' situation, it was cute, but I'd had a dog once, she didn't change her feelings for me then.
“This is my girlfriend,” He said as he calmed down, patting Charcoal's head. “Ain't she pretty?” He asked. It was a handsome dog, black shiny fur, a little muddy, but nothing a little water couldn't fix. It was then, as I looked at her closer, that I recognized her.
“That's the stray Uncle Blake's always shooting at!” I blurted out. Apparently it wasn't a stray; it was Chaz Killroy's dog.
“Yup. I see people trying to run her down and kill her all the time. I don't worry about her though; she's a lot smarter than any old fart in this hick town. I've seen her jump a three-foot fence, dodging a shot from a Beebe gun. She knows how to take care of herself,” Chaz sat back and stretched his arms out, spreading his legs a bit as if he expected the dog to give him a lap dance, but obviously is was his way of he relaxing. The dog whined and picked up the leash again, setting it on his lap, it lifted its front paws off the ground and sat up into the ever-popular `begging' position.
“Aw come on babe, I took you for a two hour walk yesterday,” He said glumly. The dog moaned and lay down with its head resting on his feet, looking up at him and wagging its tail.
“Come on Chaz, if you don't want her to break up with you, you'd better please her,” Ally joked. I simply watched as Charcoal rolled over onto her back, her mouth open as she panted with her tongue hanging out. Chaz rolled his eyes and leaned forward, rubbing her tummy, hoping that would be enough for his demanding lover.
“All right sweetheart, go tear something up. I'll keep the leash, and you come back to the house when it's dark and I'll take you up town when it's not as hot out, deal?” He asked, sticking out a hand. The dog lifted a paw and put it in his and he smiled. “Good, now go chase some squirrels,” He said, smacking her rump as she ran off down the side of the street, waiting for the cars to go by before she crossed.
“Smart dog, how'd you teacher her all that?” Ally asked curiously as she sat back down, and I followed her lead.
“That? If I'd taken that much time out of my life to teach a dog everything she knows I'd turn myself in for insanity. No way, she knew all that when I found her,” He replied. There was a trashcan about four yards behind Allison, and all together five away from him. Still, he didn't seem to have any trouble tossing the pop bottle over her head and into the small garbage can.
“Not bad,” Ally said, looking back to see that he'd made it. “What would Charcoal think if she saw you with another woman?” She asked. My breath hitched and my eyes widened, she couldn't have been suggesting what I thought she was.
“She's not really the jealous type,” Chaz winked at her just as a large truck pulling in behind us caught the attention of all three of us. At first we all just looked to acknowledge someone was there, but then the man spoke.
“Get your feet off my table, Chaz,” The man said through the open window. Not only did Chaz take his feet down, but he stood up too, walking over to the car and leaning against it.
“Hey Ralphy, where you been?” He asked in a friendly manner. The guy didn't seem to happy that his car was being leaned on, but he didn't say anything on the subject, just shut the car door and headed toward the entrance to the gas station.
“I had a dentist appointment, I'm gonna ask Bob if you gave him any problems so you might as well tell me now if you did,” Ralph stopped at the door and looked back at him.
“What are you gonna do, call the cops on me?” Chaz chuckled. “Nah, I just bought some sodas today. I'm only an annoying bitch to you,” He followed Ralph inside, seeming to have forgotten about Allison and I.
“He's cool, how come we've never met him before?” She asked. I was sickened, I'd been in love with her four for years straight, and she hadn't even noticed me as more than her best friend. Now all of the sudden Chaz Killroy pops up and she's all love struck.
“I don't know,” I spoke rather harshly. I didn't care why; it was probably because he was older. I mostly hung out with people in my grade or one grade above or below me, I was a sophomore, but he looked old enough to be graduated. He'd probably spend the rest of his life in that town, and grow up to be just like everyone else. I had bigger things on my mind, as did most everyone else, but not everyone was going to succeed in getting where they wanted to be.
“Hey, Allison, Jayce, there's air conditioning in here,” Chaz yelled out to us shortly before turning right back inside. Allison and I both looked at each other in question, shrugged our shoulders and stood up. The sun was rather annoying, beating down on my jet-black hair, I was almost sweating and I'd barely been moving. As much as I hated to see Allison and Chaz flirting with one another again, air conditioning sounded good.
Heh, I know, nothing good in this chapter. I'm sorry to say in the next two there won't be anything if much either, but it builds the suspense. I'm pretty sure it'll get going in five though. No super long killer wait like I did with Where the Heart is… Also, I used to be one who didn't like to read straight sex, well, if you're that type of person, you might want to skip on, because this story does have one scene like that later on. Comments loved!
