Chapter Two

The Chosen and The Demons

 

February 17, 2006

Near Spokane, Washington

My name is Bryan... my last name is no longer of any importance and seven days ago I turned eighteen. I am a senior at Chaney High School in Chaney, Washington. I am a six foot seven Caucasian male; I weigh 190 lbs and have brown hair and blue eyes. I am very thin and not that strong.

I have always enjoyed first-person shooter video games and have been a student at my local Bushi dojo since I was five where I learn the way of the warrior. I also try to follow the knight's code of chivalry. Let me tell you my story at the point when my life got interesting. I*m standing in the rain at 5 o*clock in the afternoon on Friday.

*Where the hell is that god damn bus? We*ve been waiting for three hours!* I grumbled.

*I don*t know Bryan but please stop complaining.* Said Alyx.

Alyx is in the same grade as I am, she*s five foot four, with a natural bronze colored skin from her Aztec ancestry, she has dirty blonde hair and blue eyes. She*s very athletic and so weighs only 175 lbs. She also has the most beautiful laugh that you*ve ever heard. We*ve known each other since eighth grade and I*ve had a crush on her since ninth.

*Alyx you may be able to sit there and not complain but I on the other hand can not.* I said.

*Okay than maybe you can wait on your own from now on.* She replied.

*No I don*t want that.* I replied quickly.

My parents died when I was three and I was raised by my cousin who was twenty-five at the time. But they aren*t important. As I was saying we were waiting for the bus in the rain when all of a sudden there*s a bright flash of red light from within the thick forest behind us

*What was that?* I asked.

*What was what?* Alyx replied.

*Didn't*t you just see that flash of light in the woods?* I Inquired.

 

*No* She replied.

Alyx stared back down the road while I looked intently into the pitch-black forest behind us.

*Oh! There's the bus,* She shouted excitedly. I looked back down the road and sure enough there was the bus.

*About time.* I muttered. As we got on the bus I felt a strange urge in my head to go back and investigate that light. It felt like something was screaming at me from the edge of my perception to go back and find it. I promised myself I would go back to investigate the light.

However the next day I didn't have any spare time to go check the forest. Someone at my work called in sick so my boss asked if I would cover for him. I needed the money so I agreed. The same thing happened the next day. It was a week before I had time to go back to the forest, but by then I had completely forgotten about the light. At the back of mind there was that strange sensation that kept getting more and more urgent to do something.

The next Saturday I was invited to Alyx*s 18th birthday. The party started at the arcade where we had a tournament on each video game they had. I won all the shooter games. The next place we went was the town mall. There we played Laser Quest. I was also the best at that. The last thing we did (at her mother's disapproval) was go play paint ball. There I did so-so ending the game in 4th place. Finally we went to Alyx*s house for the real party.

Her mother would be gone for the rest of the weekend for a business trip and didn't*t plan to return till Monday and she didn't*t know about it. So those who had been invited arrived at 7 o*clock that night. Alyx*s house is a few miles from the bus stop in the middle of the woods. Alyx has a very big house that is very cozy, with three floors if you count the basement, and a large deck out back. At around midnight it was only me, Alyx and our best friends. The clock had just struck twelve when there was an earthquake. The quake lasted three seconds and was immediately followed by and explosion and a flash of red light. That was when I remembered the flash I had seen at the bus stop. That was when the voice at the back of my mind started to panic.

*Whoa what was that?!* Shouted Edward. He*s six feet tall and has brown hair and eyes, he looks like he should be a knight in old England and it just so happens that is where he*s from.

 

*I don*t know!* Screamed Sophie. Sophie*s parents are from Egypt. She has black hair with blue highlights and green eyes.

*It came from outside.* Erik said. He has red hair, blue eyes and reminds everyone of a Viking.

*It came from the forest.* said Corey. Her full name is Corey Furajima and she has brown eyes and black hair. Her parents are from an island near Taiwan called Okinawa.

*Well I say we go find out what it was.* Kenny declared. Kenny is a Native American;

he has black hair and looks like a wrestler.

*Yeah!* Agreed Alyx and Corey.

*Lets get some flashlights first.* I suggested.

Fifteen minutes later we were out in the woods. We each had a flashlight, but Erik, Edward, and I had brought big flashlights and our BB and paint ball guns too because Alyx had seen some wolves recently. As we entered the forest my mind started screaming at me to run away. It felt as if we were being watched by something sinister and as we walked I could have sworn that I saw large four and two legged things moving around in the shadows beyond our flashlights but every time I shone my light where I saw something there was nothing there.

*Anyone else get the feeling we*re being watched?* I asked.

*Yeah.* They each agreed.

So Erik, Edward, and I switched the safety off our “guns” and taped our flashlights to them. I looked up just as a bolt of lightning illuminated the space between the tree limbs. What I saw there scared the shit out of me. Perched between the tree limbs was a creature that had razor sharp teeth and claws. Its skin was brown and it had four glowing red eyes.

I screamed and in a half a second had my BB gun aimed at the gap and firing. But it wasn*t there.

*What?* yelled Erik, Edward, and Kenny as the girls, with the exception of Alyx, screamed.

*I saw something* I said shakily *up there* and I pointed the barrel at the gap in the tree limbs. Everyone pointed their light towards the gap I indicated but their was nothing there.

*What did you see?* Alyx asked. *I*m not sure. I think it was a demon.* I replied.

*A demon?* Sophie replied skeptically *Bryan I think your losing it.*

 

*I*m telling you I saw a demon.* I told them. We hiked for miles deeper into the forest.

In the distance their was a flash of lightning followed almost immediately by the boom of thunder.

*I think its going to rain* Corey moaned *we should go back*

*Yeah let*s go back* I said nervously *if it*s going to rain than we should go back.*

*Since when have you been a wuss* Alyx teased *its only a little rain.*

There was a flash of lightning along with the boom of thunder and it started to pour big, fat, cold rain drops.

*Oh great now I*m not only freaked out but I*m also soaking wet.* I complained.

There was another flash and I saw it again. But it wasn*t alone. There were at least six others with it, but they each looked different. One had six legs, two claws for hands and a tiny head with huge fangs jutting out of its mouth. One was eight feet tall and had one of its arms shaped like a scimitar sword while its other hand had three foot long claws. Another one was on all fours and was slowly opening and closing its teeth filled jaws. One of them looked like shadow turned solid. There was one that looked like a mutated gorilla with two extra arms that were shaped like scythes. One of them looked like a demonic dog with four fingered fore paws and a long, drooling snout. One thing they all had were burning red eyes.

*There they are!* I screamed as I leveled my *guns* on the demons but they had vanished again.

*Dude, your starting to freak me out now* Erik said nervously.

*Yeah Bryan please stop* Whimpered Sophie. Now as we walked I could see them in every flash of lightning and saw bits of them in the illumination of our flashlights but every time I tried to show them to my friends, they were already gone.

It was about two in the morning when it happened. Sophie screamed as the sword armed demon leapt in front of her.

*SEE THAT*S ONE OF THE THINGS I SAW* I yelled as I shot at it. The demon didn*t seem to notice the BB*s hit it as it grabbed Sophie. Sophie let out a blood curdling scream as the demon grabbed her and she started to hit it with her flashlight.

 

The demon ignored her and leapt away. Than the other demons rushed out and the six legged one grabbed Erik.

*Get your goddamn hands off me!* He shouted as he shot it point blank but all this did was bug it as it too leapt away.

*RUN* I yelled. Me, Corey and Edward went one way while Kenny and Alyx went another way. As we ran I stopped every few feet and shot at the three demons chasing us. I saw the dog-like one, the gorilla, and the one I had seen first. After a few minutes of this I turned around again and was punched in the nose by the gorilla. I fell to the ground as I heard Corey scream. I tried to get up but I felt the gorillas claw slash me across my cheek and I fell to the ground again. This time I got to my knees and looked up... right into the four eyed demon.
