Original Stories Fan Fiction ❯ The Shadow Wars ❯ Accidents Happen ( Chapter 1 )

I wake up and darkness is surrounding me, it's the morning darkness. Not yet early enough for the sun to rise, but not yet late enough for the moon to set. My alarm is playing some lame song by Hawthorn Heights making me regret the day that has yet to begin. A moan slides past my lips, and I creep my arm slowly over to the button, and as my hand drops the music stops along with other sounds that I usually hear. I pull the covers away from my legs and drop them to the empty side of my bed, Starlight would be sleeping there but she has already disappeared this morning.
Laying there I ponder whether or not I should move. The sudden smell of coffee brushes my nose, then only a few moments later I hear the voices of my parents speaking to one another. I know why my father is awake but why is my mother; her work doesn't start until the later hour of 9 a.m. My father is a teacher (or as he would like to call it a professor) at my school. He teaches World History for my lovely Junior class. My mother is opposite she is the Owner of a Computer fixing store, she thinks it's the most amazing job and gets ecstatic whenever someone comes in that needs help with a virus.
I hear foot steps on my ceiling and decide that it's my moms wake up call. My toes inch there way over the side of the bed and slowly touch my cold concrete floor. The door that's only feet from my bed seems miles away by this point. I yawn and stand letting my arm push itself forward I twist my hand and the door opens. First there's a flash of light that my eyes transfer into dots of light everywhere as I blink things look fuzzy but I can make them out good enough. There are the stairs that lead up to my kitchen to which my mother will be sitting tight in a chair drinking her coffee and looking at another magazine that sells computer parts. My father on the other hand would be sitting across from her smiling and looking at the morning comics, along with the good books and movies about history. My legs pick themselves up and then drop down on each step I count as I go up there are exactly 18 steps to my kitchen.
I feel my mom turn her head and stare at me “Liz, you look like the undead” my mom said, setting down her coffee and turning around to give me her full attention.
“Marsh” My father whispered.
I yawned and shrugged “I might look like this now but at least I don't look like it all day” I said, her mouth opened to say something back but I turned and walked down the stairs back into my room, my haven.
I flipped on my light switch and everything came to life, the day was beginning and not in a good way. I plugged in my hair straightener; I put on my make-up I had 30 minutes to get ready. That meant that I had to do my everyday routine twice as fast so that I could still get a ride with my dad instead of having to get on the bus. I pull on my clothes then it was time to do my hair. I brush it, part it with three hair ties and then take out one hair tie at a time straightening them one by one. By the time I'm done my head was hot and my hair's as straight as I could get it. I grab my Jacket and my bag, then traveled up my stairs back into the kitchen. My mom was still pressed against the kitchen counter, my father in the same spot I had seen him last time. She took a long drink of her coffee then glanced at me as I sat down in the chair furthest from her. I toke a drink of orange juice and looked over my father and mother.
My father was smiling and looking at the comics in the news paper, his eyes were bright blue and full of life. Even at the age of 40, his features were distinct making him look like he was in his mid 20's. There weren't any wrinkles on his face, no crows feet breaking from the corner of his eye, his blonde hair was still blonde missing all the grey hairs that were meant for his age. My mother on the other hand had brown eyes that were dull and lifeless, as if her life had already come and ended. Her face was aged with wrinkles moving in all directions and crows feet peaking from the corners of her eyes, her blonde hair looked faded and had grey hairs in it. I had once seen a picture of her when she was younger and had me in her stomach her face had been so beautiful then, but now it was as if she was somewhere else instead of here. I got my brown eyes from my mom. My brown hair on the other hand was a mystery, when I was 12 I had a paternity test to see if I was really my fathers and yes I was. The only thing we could all come up with was that my grandma had passed down the brown gene and that's why I had brown hair.
I sighed and looked down at my hands closing my eyes I was still tired from the late night of me studying. I tried to remember how the Peloponnesian War ended. In front of me there was a plop on the table causing my eyes to slowly open and study the envelop that had been placed in the spot where my plate would be. The envelope said `Grandma Clara' on it which meant that it was for my Grandma who I had to visit with once a month. That annual visit had already happened for this month.
I turned to look at my mom “What am I supposed to do with this?” I asked.
“I want you to go to your grandmothers house after school and give this to her” she answered sitting down across from me.
“No” I answered pushing the envelope to her “I have a Book Club meeting after school” I said “Not to mention a detention before that” I whispered only loud enough for my father too look at me quickly then stare back into his comic strip.
She pushed the envelope forward back in front of me “Go after, Your grandma likes seeing you it'll be good for her” she leaned forward daring me to say something else.
I acknowledged it and moved forward “I've already visited her for the month my job is over. She's your mother do it yourself. It'll be good for you and her” I hissed.
“I suppose that's true, you'll be doing this for me when I'm old. You'll have to take care of me” she said “Anyways your grandmother likes seeing you more then she likes seeing me” she shook her head.
“I like that little dream of yours. The one where I take care of you when your old, cause that's all its going to ever be a dream” I said and picked up the envelope “I'm ready to go dad” I said and walked towards the door.
“What no goodbye mom?” my mother asked.
“Have a fantastic day” I answered my words dripping with the venom.
I walked outside and heard the sudden rush of sounds from the animals that had finally awakened with the morning sun. The sun pressed the heat onto the front of my body making me feel less awake then I was before. I was more of a Night time kind of person the moon made me want to dance, especially the full moon. The car beeped and my dad entered into the driver's side as I entered into the passenger seat.
The car started and we were off to my lovely school, The Arthur High school. Supposedly we named our high school after King Arthur. I don't really mind because I think that the King Arthur books are well written and that some of the facts may be true.
While I'm off in my own little world my dads voice enters my thoughts causing me to turn in look at him as he says “So how was your day yesterday?” still looking at the road.
I turn and look out the window “Peachy. How was yours?” I asked.
“Just dandy” he answers “So why'd Pat call you to the office yesterday?” he asks.
Still staring out the window I answer “She wanted to give me a detention for today because I was tardy to my last hour 3 times. The detention is an hour long so I'll be arriving home late tonight, especially since I have to go give grandma the money envelope also” Pat is the schools vice Principal.
“ ;Why were you late to your last hour?” he asked.
I thought back to all the times I missed “I have to walk from one side of the school to the other then back again to get the book I need for that class” I answered.
He nodded understanding the situation “Don't you have Mrs. Burtox?” he asked still staring out the front window, he leaned forward to make sure no one was coming from the other direction then made a left turn.
I nodded looking at all the leaves that were scattering across the road, making fall look even more beautiful with colors flowing from every direction. If only everyday were as beautiful as today “Yes, I've already asked if I could leave my book in her room and she said that we need to learn responsibility, and that having us separate our time wisely will help us accomplish that” I sighed laying my head in the palm of my hand.
“How about you just leave the books and folders you need for that class in my room since I'm right next door to her room, you won't have any more detentions” he said patting my leg with his hand lightly.
I nodded slightly pulling my head up out of my palm and looked him, his eyes were focused on the road as if he could catch anything that was living if it jumped out in front of us. The car stopped and I realized we were in front of the school. I stared at it, the colors were dark blue and Grey we were the Sharks. I toke a deep breath and opened the door “Have a good day Juliet” my dad yelled waving to me.
“You too Dad” I answered as he drove off to get into teachers parking lot. I walked up the stairs looking forward but not really paying attention to any of my surroundings, entering the building it was quiet, there was still another 30 minutes until kids would start showing up. I slowly walked to my locker going up the stairs and entering the into the Junior Hallway my locker was at the very end next to the stairs, twirling in the combination I pulled off my back pack opening it and laying it on the ground so that I could sort through what I needed for my first three hours.
I pulled out all the homework I had and put each assignment into the folder for its class. I pulled out the first three text books I'd need for those classes, Biology, Math, and Challenge English. I picked up the back pack and trailed to the other end of the school room 59 Biology with Mr. Ambers. I walked to the middle of the class room and sat my back pack next to the desk.
“Good Morning Juliet” I turned to see Mr. Ambers behind me.
I nodded towards him “Good morning Mr. Ambers” I said walking towards the door.
He put out his arm and grabbed my wrist slightly turning me around to face him, he smiled down at me “Juliet, tell me something” he spoke “Why are you always here early in the morning why don't you arrive when the rest of the class does?” he asked.
I pulled my arm away letting it drift down to my side and shrugged “I'm not like everyone else, I'm different” I answered and was out the door before he could speak another word.
I moved casually down the hallway towards the library so that I could check out a book, any book would due; I still had a while before classes began. Moving down the isles I glanced at a classic and decided that it was perfect, I hadn't read the book Romeo and Juliet for a while now would be as good a time as any other. I grabbed it and the lady behind the counter checked it out to me quickly. I walked back into my first hour class and sat down beginning to read it. Each character danced through my head as I read each page. The bell finally rang, I hadn't even noticed the students sitting in chairs close by, talking amongst themselves.
Something seemed off something felt different, the sun shining on the outside world bringing the yellow, orange, brown and green leaves to life; having the colors dance across the street and school yard. As I watched the leaves drift with the wind I could no longer concentrate on what the teacher was saying. His words went in one ear and out the other; my mind not being able to grasp a single word he was speaking to us. I couldn't listen in any of my classes the day going by in a blur, almost like a cloud had been pressed inside my head keeping me from concentrating. Although I did try my hardest on the test which I was sure I must've passed with at least a B or C. Lunch came and during that time I toke that supplies I'd be needing for Mrs. Burtox class and put them in my fathers room. In detention I finished the homework that my classes had given me. When it was over I returned my books to my locker and ran to the bus stop making it just in time for it to round the corner leaving me to sit on the bench for another hour and wait for the next bus to come and pick me up.
The bus finally came and as I expected it was an hour later. When I finally arrived to my grandmothers house it was 5:30. I knocked on her door and we began our daily routine of her asking me about every single thing that's happened in a month, she made me dinner I helped her with the dishes we chatted a little bit more then I climbed back onto the bus at 8 o'clock. I laid my head on the back of the seat and let my mind drift into the open world of my imagination.
Someone tapped my shoulder “Excuse me miss” I opened my eyes and the driver was staring at me “I'm afraid you've fallen asleep this is the end of the route” he said.
“Oh dear” I said standing slowly “Thank you” I said and began walking of the bus.
“Its not good for a girl to be walking these streets especially at 9:30 at night” he said “Let me drive you home” he said.
I shook my head “No its alright. Thank you for the offer” I said and walked out on the sidewalk and looking to see what the street name was. I was in the city and I was well aware that, that meant I was almost an hour's walk away from home. I yawned and began to walk happy that I had done my homework in detention.
I stepped in a puddle looking down it wasn't clear but I looked around nothing else was wet just this puddle. I heard a grunt down the alley way and turned to look, when I should have just ran. I saw a man tear off a bear looking things head and as it dropped to the ground it changed into a human form. I pulled in a gasp and the eyes switched to me as a voice yelled in my head “RUN!” I dropped my small purse to the ground and ran not making a noise. How come he appeared in front of me so fast, I dashed to the side only to be grabbed something dug into my wrist cutting it slightly deep and having blood trickle onto the ground. “Don't kill her!” a man with silver hair now said, he looked down at me and then I was unconscious.
and end.
I'll try to post again soon.
