Maven dusted himself off, groaning as he had to wipe the slobber off of his arm. Not one of his finer moments. His entire arm felt violated and funny.

Sven nodded and grabbed his gear. As they made their way through the tunnels, he kicked at the skeletons that littered its halls. The creatures on the other side were all restless. He didn't know what he could to calm them. They wanted blood. At least they had been able to get away from the big monster though or they'd all be dead. Going to the ladder, he tested it and nodded. "I'll go up first to see what's up there."

After reaching the top, he pushed open the lid and called for the others. "This leads back up to the main tunnel. From here we should be able to go topside."

"They are in my head!" Skyla cried. "Get out! Get out!" she screamed.

"Take her first," Maverick said and passed Skyla up. He let the girls go next then Maven. He then went up and helped Boris with the bags until he too was up. Evana covered the hole back up and Maverick helped Skyla to her feet while Lana looked her over.

"You...don't look so good..."

Pushing her aside she rushed away from the group and threw up. Every thought from the skags ran threw her head. She could hear their plans to kill everyone and every detail on taking their flesh off and cleaning the bones.

Maven rubbed his arm which still felt funny. It probably wouldn't be right until he got it cleaned off. Going over to Skyla, he held her hair back while she threw up. "Are you alright?"

"Okay. If we go up these stairs we should be back to open ground. I'd rather take my chances with Raiders than skags any day."

Skyla nodded and stood again. Lana handed her a handkerchief and she wiped her mouth. "I'm...ok..."

Evana looked at Boris and noticed Hailey was still asleep. "That girl could sleep through the war. I swear it."

"It's still early in the morning. She's just not use to being awake so early."

"Yes, she's been sleeping like an angel ever since we set out," Boris smiled, completely oblivious to everything else.

Sven rolled his eyes and packed up his gear. "Let's go."

"Yeah, let's get out of here," Maven agreed quickly.

Skyla looked down at the hole. She could still hear them even though they were separated by concrete. Shaking, she ran to Maven and grabbed his hand again. They all got up the stairs and as the sunlight hit Boris, Hailey started to wake. She stretched and yawned.

"Good morning, Teddy. What's for breakfast?" she said sleepy.

Boris tried not to fawn over the small girl. "We have some rations that you can snack on. Would you like your juice?"

Sven groaned. This wasn't a babysitting place. Their supplies were few and precious! Still, he kept his mouth shut for now. No use getting into a fight on the first day. He could save that for later.

Maven looked down at Skyla’s hand and gave it a small squeeze. She had a death grip on his own hand, but he didn't mind.

"I like juice," she said as she clapped her hands.

Maverick handed her something to eat with a smile as Boris got out her juice. Evana glared at them. "Walk and feed the girl people. We are wasting day light."

"I figure if we can make it to the highway we can camp there tonight and try to push through to the base tomorrow," Sven explained as he showed them the holo map.

Maven just nodded. Sleeping outdoors sounded nice after being cooped up in a tunnel and almost eaten.

And so they walked out. Not much was said in the silence other than Hailey's soft humming or sometimes singing. Eventually, Skyla's grip on Maven's hand loosen. Zenith seemed to sense her tenseness and stayed on her shoulder for a long time talking to her just to get the other thoughts of the skags out of her head. That helped more than anything.

She reached in her bag and handed Zenith a cookie. "Thank you friend. You are most helpful," she said softly with a smile before Zenith took off again.

By the time they reached the highway night was already beginning to fall. Sven, Sarah, Evana, and Maverick worked to set up a perimeter to keep them safe that night while Boris tended to moving rubble aside, making a temporary shelter of sorts.

Hailey followed Boris around pretending to push or lift things with him. Skyla held out her hand for Zenith and whispered something in her ear. She disappeared, flying off before coming back with a rat in her mouth. Lana smiled.

"She says thank you for seeing it, Lana. She promises to return the favor later," Skyla said.

"Oh...um...your welcome."

Maven watched as Zenith took off once more to eat her food in silence and as to not disturb the others. He smiled and relaxed against the rocks. Closing his eyes, he began to meditate, trying to shake the disturbing images and sounds from earlier out of his mind.

Boris let little Hailey run around, hoping she would expend her energy and be ready for bed when the time came. She was a little bundle of energy, he could barely keep up with her.

Maverick finally sat down as the others sat down and started passing out food along with water. Hailey sat in Boris's lap wiggling and dancing to an invisible song as she chewed and took her medicine.

Skyle stood. "Oh dear...it's going to rain in about ten minutes..."

"Well if it does, it's no problem since we're beneath the highway," he said in between bites. "We'll probably have a few leaks but at least we won't be soaked. That rain can mess with your mind. All the chemicals in the clouds cause the rain to be highly irradiated. Too much of it gets on you and you'll be hallucinating for hours."

"That's what I'm afraid of," she said nervously. "I really think it's best that we try to get as much cover as possible."

"Stop being so paranoid, flower child. Sit and eat."

"We've got the protecting of the highway above us. It'll be fine," Sarah said with a shrug. "A few droplets aren't bad."

"Perhaps we should heed her suggestion? Some sort of roof wouldn't be a bad idea," Maven said softly.

"We've got about 60 tons of cement roof above us. That's more than enough."

Lana and Maverick however started taking scrap metal and making what they could for an umbrella. "Hailey...why don't you join us?" Maverick asked.

"I'm ok! Teddy will keep me dry!"

"Um...here. I think that maybe...I can help with that." He stretched his hand outward and slowly the metal began to move on its own, moving upward and assembling to form a canopy of sorts. Their movements were slow and unsteady, but it was far easier than if they had to do it by hand. His hands shook as he moved each piece. He wasn't accustomed to using his gift that often, and the strain was a little more than he was expecting. He knew that all eyes were on him, but he tried not to lose focus until the last piece was done.

"I get it now," Sven said as Maven all but collapsed backward. "You're a xenomorph, just like flower girl and Lana."

"Like me?" Lana asked.

"I insist that you all get under the shelter this instance!" Skyla said and stomped her foot. Everyone looked at her. "Please?"

Evana laughed. "Please. Like I listen to someone younger than me."

Maven closed his eyes and relaxed under the shelter he'd created. Xenomorph. He'd heard that name before... "What's a xenomorph?"

Sven smirked and walked over to the shelter. Since it was already made and he didn't have to do any work, why not use it? "Xenomorphs were suppose to be rumors. Military experiments gone awry. They said that the military altered the genes of babies in the uterus to turn them into military war machines."

Boris picked Hailey up and carried her to the shelter as well, not wanting to risk her health.

"I really doubt my parents let the military experiment on me..." Lana said as she made room for the others.

"I will give you anything you want if you just get under the shelter," Skyla said to Sarah and Evana.

"Oh hell. I hate it when people whine," Evana groaned and stood. She walked over to the shelter and sat down. Just then the sky flashed with lightening.

"Anything, Sarah! I'll do or give you anything!"

Sarah rolled her eyes. "Fine. I'm moving." She grabbed her food and gun and went to sit beneath it so that flower girl would shut up.

Sven shrugged of Lana's comment. "Maybe. Maybe not. I heard they use to promise people fresh water to run experiments."

"Wait...how much fresh water?" Her village had a lot of fresh water when she was younger.

As soon as Sarah got under the shelter the sky opened. Skyla rushed to the shelter as the rain hit the highway above. She moved in close to Maven and watched. Part of the highway above cracked and it started to pour where their camp had been. Skyla let out a long breath.

"Oh wow! Ms. Skyla is so very smart!"

Sven shrugged. "I dunno, but enough to keep villages happy." He stopped as the rain poured in. There was a sizzling sound as it hit the ground.

"You know, you could have just said that the sky was falling," Sarah muttered.

"If I had said that you wouldn't believe me. Besides, I wasn't sure what would really happen...I kinda just saw a few bodies laying around...and wet...so I put the two together..." she said.

"That's...very creepy," Evana said.

"Maybe my parents did give me up to testing... When I was a little girl, we had a lot of fresh water. The whole village did. And men on a big truck would come and deliver it. But one day it just stopped and the Raiders came," Lana said.

"Well there you go. The reason the water quit coming was probably cause the xenomorph testing was canceled after that massacre in D.C. Do any of you guys remember that? That was all they talked about when the news broadcasts were still going. A hundred dead from some military test. After that you didn't hear anything more about the xenomorphs. The military deemed them uncontrollable and nixed the project."

"So those of us who were just part of the plan were left behind with no pieces? How very cruel..." Lana said and hugged her legs to herself.

Evana looked over at her. "Hey, it's not so bad. You have a strong head on your shoulders. You seem to be doing fine in this world. Besides, you are hear now, making a difference. So don't go all gloom and doom."

Maverick smirk. "Wow, Evana. Where the hell did that come from? In all the years I've known you, a heart was not something you possessed."

"Shut it or I'll shut it for you," she growled.

Maverick just smiled.

"Yeah, look on the bright side. At least your not a dog of the military," Sarah said with a smirk. "Cause all of them are bastards."

Maven slumped down and tried to relax, but he kept coming back to the word Xenomorph. He looked at his black nails and frowned. Holding his hand out, a can of food flew into it and he began to nibble on it, giving the occasional bite to Zenith when she wanted some.

"Well if my parents let them mess with me like that then I'm ok with it. I can't really imagine my life without my gifts," Skyla said.

"Me too!" Hailey laughed.

Skyla smiled at her. "I don't think you were born altered. I think Nanny Doc just wanted you to be perfect," she said and pushed Hailey's hair from her face. "And he did such a very good job. You are very talented."

Hailey beamed. "Nanny Doc says I'm one of a kind."

"He was right." She looked out at the rain and snapped out fingers. The rain stopped. Smiling she stepped out from under the shelter.

Once the rain ended, Boris quickly exited. The makeshift shelter was good, but it was a bit cramped for his tastes. Stretching, he began to move the supplies to a dry area. Laying out sleeping bags, he was already preparing for bed. Better to get to bed early and rise early.

"Who wants first watch?" Sven asked as he finished his cigarette.

"I'll do it," Maven offered quickly.

Sven looked him up and down and shrugged. Taking his gun he pushed it into Maven's hand. "Shoot first ask questions later."

"I'll watch with him," Skyla said. "Better two pairs of eyes than one."

Hailey crawled in Boris's sleeping bag while the others got out their bags and started getting ready for bed. Skyla crawled on a broken car and sat down as she looked out at the city.

Boris chuckled as he saw the tiny bump in his bag. Shaking his head, he crawled in beside her.

Maven tried not to focus on the weight of the gun in his hand. It felt odd and weird to be holding one. It was much heavier that he thought it would be. Looking over at Skyla, he walked over and sat down beside her. "How are you feeling?"

"This is an awful place. I can't see the stars...I can't feel the wind. Everything is wrong." She then looked at him. "But, it's not so bad when I'm with friends."
