"Well any time you need a friend I'm here," Maven assured her as he laid back on the remnants of the car to stare up at the sky. "It's only been a day yet I'm already wondering if I made the right choice in coming. What about you?"
"I know I made the right choice. No matter what I do or how I do it, I never doubt my choices because at one time I believed them to be the right choice," Skyla said. She looked down at him and moved his hair from his eyes. "Still, if under all the smoke and gases...you are still so very handsome."
He tried to keep from blushing. "You're...very beautiful, Skyla," he whispered.
She smiled. "No one has ever said that to me before. Thank you, Maven."
He smiled and nodded. "You're welcome."
Overhead Zenith chirped her approval, though from the way she was glaring down at him it was obvious she expected more.
She flashed another smile before sit back up straight and looking at the city again. How could someone live in such a place? It was suffocating. She glanced at Zenith. She was going on and on about Skyla moving closer or laying down next to Maven so he could kiss her. It made her smile bigger.
Maven was only slightly paying attention to Skyla now that she was staring off into the horizon. His hands moved, and a few pebbles moved with him. The larger the object the more concentration and the more strain it put on his mind, that was why he liked to do the simple and small stuff. Zenith cawed above him and he rolled over and glared up at her."What?"
Skyla giggled. "She's doing it again. Sometimes I wish you could hear you. She's saying all these-" She suddenly stopped and looked at Zenith. "I will not say that," she said with a blush. "I'm...I'm not that kind of girl..." For the first time, she had to look away. Of all the things to make her blush, it was a bird.
He looked at her curiously. "What is she saying?"
"Very vulgar and inappropriate things..."
"Zenith! Leave her alone," he commanded sourly.
Zenith just cawed in response and fluffed up her feathers.
"Oh!" Skyla said. "Now she's practically telling you to strip..."
Maven's jaw dropped and his cheeks turned red. "I'm going to kill that bird," he muttered, completely embarrassed.
"She's insistent that you 'get to making with the babies.' She says you are not getting any younger..."
Maven shook his head, unable to believe what he was hearing. "Zenith, I'm not going to have sex with her...."
"You're not?" she asked. "Are you sure?" she then smiled.
He looked at her in disbelief. She was a girl that lived in the forest for her entire life. "Do you...I mean..." He closed his eyes. "Wait...you want to?"
"I didn't say that. I just asked if you were sure you weren't going to have sex with me. I mean, you can't really see the future so how can you know for sure that at some point you won't have sex with me," she explained. She looked at Zenith. "I'm not taking my clothes off either and even if I did my first time wouldn't be in a city. It's rather gross here..."
Zenith cawed and shook her head, obviously disappointed.
Maven looked at Skyla and sighed. "Don't encourage her. Just lay down and ignore her. Maybe she'll get the hint," he said.
"Easy for you to say... You don't hear her..." Skyla said. She then looked down at him. "Maven, if I asked you to kiss me, would you?"
Maven hesitated when she asked that. A kiss was just a kiss.... "If you wanted me to, then yes...I think I would."
Skyla smiled. "Why?"
"Because you asked me to and because I think that I'd...probably really like it."
"Do you always do what you are asked to do?"
He shrugged. "Most of the time," he admitted. "I guess I'm just sort of use to being ordered around. As long as it's nothing bad then yeah...."
"That's not always a good thing, Maven," she said with a soft smile. Slowly she laid down next to him, turning to her to look at him. "Sometimes you need to think for yourself."
"I think for myself," he said slowly. "I just usually...what's the old expression they use...'go with the flow'?"
"Well, you don't always do as you are told. Zenith has told you millions of times to do lots of...things...and you have yet to do them. So I suppose you have some free will," she joked.
"Oh yes, because I'm always going to listen to her," he smirked. "Up until a few days ago, the only things I knew she wanted of me was clothes. I didn't know she wanted me to be a man whore..."
"She doesn't. She wants you to be a husband and father. She thinks it's time you settle down. Though...she seems rather picky at whom she wants you to be with."
"I'm not that old," he sighed. "At least, I don't think I am. What kind of person does she want me to 'settle down' with?"
"I thought that was obvious..." Skyla said as she blinked at him.
He looked over at her and nodded. "Yes...well, I mean...she seems pretty adamant about me and you. I didn't know if it was because of the type of person you are...or simply because it's you."
"And what type of person am I, Maven?"
He looked up at the sky as he thought about his answer. "Beautiful. Sweet. Kind. Caring. A little forward. Very comfortable with who she is. That kind of person."
She blushed. "Oh, Maven...no one has ever said such beautiful things to me before..." she whispered softly.
Those were beautiful things he'd just said? Turning his attention back to her, he gave her a smile. "I only spoke the truth."
She placed her hand on his cheek and pushed at his hair again. "Thank you. You are very kind to me. Not many people have been."
He closed his eyes and smiled at the feeling of her hand on his cheek, brushing his hair away. "I can't believe that anyone could be mean to you."
"People are frightened of things they do not understand," she said. Her hand moved over his cheek, feeling his soft sick.
"That I can relate to," he whispered. He moved slowly, his face inching more into her hand, enjoying the feeling.
She smiled when he moved. "You don't get much human contact, do you? We are a lot alike, Maven." Her thumb lightly rubbed his cheek. "Zenith has gone quiet..."
His cheeks turned slightly red as he heard that and felt her thumb rubbing his cheek. "I guess she fell asleep...or she got tired of trying to push us together," he whispered softly.
"Or she approves."
He opened his eyes and nodded against her hand. "Yeah...that too."
She smiled softly. "Do you approve?"
He had to think about that a moment. Approve of what? Of this girl he had only known for a few days rubbing his cheek and caressing him? Or of the fact that his bird was trying to get him to be with? Or the fact that she was a cute girl, and he couldn't deny the fact that he was somewhat attracted to her? "Yes, I do," he admitted.
"But you barely know me." She continued to smile.
"We have time to change that...."
"When this is all over...I'll go back to my forest. You will never see me again."
"Is that what you see in your future?"
"No, that is what will happen. I love my forest. And I promised to return to it should I be successful in my journey with you and the others."
"I think that I would like to see your forest," he said after a few seconds of thought.
"You...would come with me? I'm a stranger, Maven."
"I didn't make a commitment to," he said softly. "I just said that I would like to. You obviously love your forest, and I would like to see it someday. Maybe by the time this is done we won't be strangers."
She caressed his cheek. "You baffle me with your beautiful words."
"I didn't realize my words were beautiful," he said, moving more into her hand. "I like this," he whispered. His cheeks turned red as he realized he'd said it out loud.
"I can tell." She moved in a little closer to him. "It's getting cold."
Maven looked at her and nodded. He hesitantly moved his arm to the side. "It might be good to move close...to conserve our heat."
She smiled. Slowly, she moved into his chest and snuggled close as she stared into his eyes. "I haven't seen many people before, Maven. But I believe you are the most handsome man I have seen."
Maven's arm wrapped around her. Her breath on his skin and the closeness of their bodies made goosebumps cover his flesh. When she stared into his eyes and said those words, he couldn't help but to blush and smile. "Your opinion might change when we see more people," he said softly, a large part of him selfishly hoping it wouldn't.
She smiled and buried her face in his chest. "No...I'm sure you will always be my favorite."
She seemed rather comfortable against him, her face buried into his flesh. He closed his eyes and tried to relax, but he kept coming back to her warm breath on his skin and the sweet smell of her. It was slightly intoxicating, and it made him smile as thoughts began to seep into his mind.
Not falling asleep was hard for her. She had never been in a man's arms before and she found it very comfortable. It only added to the affect when she found herself attacked to him.
He felt his eyes start to grow heavy. He wanted to move to get someone else to take over, but it seemed as if Skyla was already asleep, and he didn't want to disturb her. "Zenith, wake me if you see anything," he whispered with a small yawn. He moved slightly, his head resting against hers as he closed his eyes.
"Raiders!" Maverick yelled.
Skyla shot up off Maven's chest. Surrounding them were a great deal of Raiders. She had never seen one before but from the looks of their faces...they weren't friendly.
Lana cried out as she was pulled to her feet roughly by one of them. "Lana!" Skyla yelled.
On of them grabbed Skyla's leg and pulled her harshly from Maven as she screamed. Hailey hugged Boris for dear life while Evana punched and kicked at those trying to grab at her. Sarah and Sven were diving for their guns while Maverick was trying to get Lana from those that were passing her and Skyla around in the crowd.
"Take the girls and kill the men!" One of the raiders yelled. They fired their guns into the air before taking sights on the others.
Sven kicked his briefcase which quickly launched two pistols into the air. Grabbing them, he twirled around and began to fire, picking off those that had itchy trigger fingers. Sarah wasn't nearly as discreet. She grabbed her gun and began spraying bullets into the crowd. Boris held Haily in one arm and used his other to smash into anyone who got into his way. No one was laying a hand on her.
Maven jumped off the car and yelled for Skyla. "Let her go!" He yelled. He pushed his hand forward and watched one of the Raiders fly back. There were a few yells from the crowd. Someone yelled Xenomorph and then all hell broke lose.
"Lana!" Skyla screamed and reached for her as they were passed around.
Lana was blushing as hands were all over her. "Lana! Use your strength!" Evana yelled as her fist landed in one of the Raiders' faces. "Then get the hell out of the crowd!"
"Oh! Right!" Lana cried. "I'm...really sorry about this," she said softly as she kicked one of them in the face. She could hear bones crunch and she twisted her body to punch another. Pulling out her gun as she landed to her feet, she cleared a path to Maverick.
Maverick pressed his back to her as his hands moved too fast for the Raiders to see. Before they could blink, they were dead. He had out two knives and was slicing them faster than they could see what was in his hands. "Just stay with me, Lana!" She nodded as she kept firing.
"Get them, Teddy! You break their faces! Bad man! You are all very bad men!" Hailey yelled out.
Skyla twisted and turned into the hands of them men. She tried biting them or kicking, but compared to them, she was frail and weak.
"Where in the hell do they keep coming from?" Sven shouted. Even as he said this a bullet ripped through his leg causing him to fall to one knee.
Sarah quickly moved beside him, but bullets were flying past her, missing her by mere inches.
Boris tried to fend them off, but with only one hand, they were overwhelming him. He felt their knives and bullets sink into his flesh, but he didn't dare move his arm, as it was the only thing shielding Hailey from harm.
Maven ducked beneath a guy who was trying to stab him with a knife. He pushed him back with a weak kinetic blast and raced to Skyla. "Let her go!" He demanded. With a flick of his hand the guy that was holding her flew back slightly, just enough to get her free. Grabbing her hand, he pulled her against him as the sea of Raiders threatened to consume them.
"We are overwhelmed!" Evana yelled. A bullet hit her shoulder. "We can't last like this!"
The butt of a rifle slammed into the back of Maven's head knocking him to the ground. The sound of gunfire echoing all around him made his head hurt even worse. It sounded so loud...too loud. Much too loud. He grabbed his head, writhing as blood dripped from the back of his head. There were screams...so much screaming. Skyla? Was she screaming. "Stop it!" He yelled as he sat up, still holding his head.
There was screaming, but not from people dying, it was from Raiders having heart attacks as their guns were ripped from their hands and began floating in the air, the barrels pointed at them. Maven opened up his eyes for an instant, and in that instant they were as black as his nails. "I said stop!"
That was the last thing he remembered before he fell unconscious. The strain of that little stunt had pushed him past his limits and he accepted the nice abyss of darkness. By that point the Raiders had all but turned tail and fled, afraid that their phantom guns were going to kill them.
"What the hell was that?" Sven said, cursing as he plopped down on the ground. "Maverick, let me see one of your knives. I need to get this bullet out of my leg."
"Bird boy just went all possessed," Sarah laughed in relief as she leaned against the crumbling stone and held her bleeding arm. "That was fucking awesome!"
Skyla went to her knees and cradled his head in her lap. "You were very brave..." she whispered as she stroked his head even though he was unconscious.
"Yay! My turn!" Hailey said and hopped down from Boris's arms. She went to her bag and pulled out a medical bag. "Who is first?!"
Sven looked at the small girl, not really trusting her to take care of his wound. "Just give me a knife so I can dig this bullet out an I'll be fine. Help the girls and Boris."
"Thank you for volunteering!" she laughed. Before he could reach, a pin landed in his back, paralyzing him. Hailey walked over to him and examined his leg. "Easy Pezy!" She pulled out another pin and stuck it in his leg. "This will take the feeling away." She opened her bag and set to work while everyone watched her. Using her tools, she pulled out the bullet then stitched him up and took the pins out. She walked over to Sarah. "Next!"
Sven shuddered once he could move again. "What the hell was that?"
"That's her talent. I told you she knows the human body," Skyla said.
Hailey finished with Sarah them moved to Skyla she stuck a needle in Maven and injected him with something. "Wakey wakey!" she sang before going to Evana.
Evana sat on the ground so Hailey could get to her shoulder. "You really know your medicine."
"I have songs that help me remember!" she laughed. After finishing with Evana she rushed to Boris. "Poor Teddy," she said and stroked his arm. "I fix you now!"
He smiled at the small girl. "My wounds are small. They will heal. There is no need for you to worry about me."
"Boris, you have a knife sticking out of your side..."
Boris moved his arm and gasped. "Oh. I guess I do."
Maven groaned as he felt himself coming around. "I feel like Boris stomped on my head."
Skyla stroked his head. "Just relax," she said softly.
"Stay still, Teddy or I'll have to make you! Stick, stick and pull through then add the alcohol and you are all through!" she sang while working on him.
"I know I made the right choice. No matter what I do or how I do it, I never doubt my choices because at one time I believed them to be the right choice," Skyla said. She looked down at him and moved his hair from his eyes. "Still, if under all the smoke and gases...you are still so very handsome."
