"I didn't realize that you had problems sleeping. You slept fine that...uh...one night," he said softly.
"Body heat helps...reminds me of the animals I sleep with in the forest," she sad while munching on the cookie.
"Well you should have just laid with me. I wouldn't have minded having you close," he informed her.
She looked up at the sky to look at Zenith. Stepping to the side, she just avoided getting pooped on. "Yeah...risking my health is a good idea..."
He glared up at her. "One day she's trying to get me to strip for you, and the next she's pooping on you. Isn't there anything you can say to her to make her play nice? Because as of late she's ignoring what I say."
"She doesn't listen to me. She doesn't trust me anymore. Animals can hold a grudge until they die," she said as she finished the cookie and rubbed her eyes.
He sighed as he stared up at the sky. "Zenith! You get down here this instant!"
The bird flew over head, but with a small nudge from him she came down quickly. Holding her in his hands, he held her up to Skyla. "You two make up, now!"
Skyla paled. "You want me dead down you? You want me to die before this is over," she said as she looked at Maven. "You are only pissing her off."
Maven shook his head. "Zenith, leave her alone. She's a good girl. You use to like her! So she told me about my past. Big deal. That's no reason to get so worked up over."
Zenith leaned down and bit his hand, causing him to drop her so that she could take to the sky. "Ow! She's never bit me before," he said as he held his thumb. "She seems more agitated than usual today...."
Skyla shrugged. "Don't look at me. She doesn't talk to me anymore." She pulled out a handkerchief and handed it to him. "Here." Yawning she watched the horizon as the sun began to rise.
"Whatever it is, I hope that you two can work out some sort of agreement. I hate having to choose between the both of you," he muttered as he wrapped his thumb.
Skyla looked over at him. "You would choose her. And I'm ok with that. You've had her longer and you love her. There is nothing wrong with that," she said with a soft smile. "She's been with you from the beginning."
"With all due respect Skyla....sometimes you need more than the company of animals."
She paused. Was he saying he would choose her or that she in general shouldn't be alone in the forest? "I like the animals. They don't put so much strain on my head. And they don't betray you or disappoint you. Nothing is held inside. They say everything on their mind and never hold anything back. I always know what to expect from them and I don't have to play a game to guess what they are talking about or what they are feeling."
"I wasn't questioning your relationship with your forest," he said quickly. "I was just saying that people...need other people."
"Why? To reproduce or just for company? Can you explain why I need someone around?"
He sighed. "Maybe you don't," he said as he turned around and starting to catch up with the others. "Some people like being alone. Other people crave attention, and some just like having someone to talk to."
Skyla moved her hands over her arms, warming herself as the sun rose. She didn't know much about people, but she knew she didn't need them all those years she spent in the forest...but...not, it seemed to be different. Lately, she was doubting herself and her ways. Normally she was confident and satisfied, but as of late, she felt she was missing something or that she was wrong to be the way she is. Could it be that she was never meant to be the way she was? Was she suppose to be more like the others?
"So D.C., huh? I've never been up there before. I remember hearing that back before the war it was the place where the government resided." Boris rocked Hailey in his arms as if she was a baby to keep her asleep.
Sven laughed. "Yeah, if you could call it that. They're the ones who wanted to go to war. Not the people. Yet in the end it was the people that paid for their mistakes. Stupid bastards."
"Yeah, well it's over now. And it's time to clean up," Evana said as she stretched then fixed her form fitting dress. "No reason to dwell on the past now."
"I agree. We have to keep moving on so we can get the job done and hope for the best," Maverick added as Lana shifted in his arms.
Sarah's eyes drifted over Evana. She tried hard not to lick her lips. God she loved that body. She had to keep her mind in check so that she could continue to conversation. "It's a four day walk to D.C. Hopefully if we get lucky we can steal a vehicle from one of the idiots in D.C. Maybe even one of those helicarriers the military uses. I might can still fly one...given the proper motivation."
Evana smirked. "Consider me you official motivation therapist," she said. Leaning in she moved her lips close to Sarah's ear. "Tonight you should be prepared for your first session."
Maverick smiled. "Could it be that the promiscuous Evana has decided to settle?"
Evana shrugged.
Sarah smiled at the thought of tonight. She was always use to being the one in control, but something about being with Evana made all that disappear. "I'm looking forward to it," she said with a curved smile as she moved in close against Evana. Even if this was just a good screw, she would enjoy it while it lasted; and if it turned into something more...she would enjoy that as well.
Maverick continued to smiled. Evana looked over at him. "What about you and Lana?"
"She is my friend. I promised to look after her while she is with us. Nothing more," he said as he looked down at Lana. Her hand was fisted on his shirt and she was sleeping soundly.
"Oh come on! You would tap that!" Evana laughed.
Maverick smirked and looked over at her. "She is much to young to 'tap' as you call it."
"She doesn't seem to think so," Sarah informed him. "She seems quite adamant that she cares for you and wants to be with you."
"She's young and still has a lot of time. I'm sure some young boy will sweep her off her feet and she will forget all about me," Maverick smiled.
"Maybe. Maybe not. You'd have to ask Skyla what will happen, cause she's the one with the little crystal ball."
"Didn't she say she can't look that far?"
Sarah just shrugged against Evana. "I don't know." She smirked as she looked over at him. "You're curious, aren't you?"
Maverick looked over at Sarah. "I'm not the one talking about asking Skyla. I'm content not knowing what will happen just as the rest of us. Besides, knowing the future can be a heavy burden to bear."
"Yeah, maybe so. It would suck knowing that you're about to die. I'd much rather have bird boy's powers. I could let my gun shoot people while I'm sitting down drinking."
Evana laughed. "I'm just fine with what I have. Feeling the bone shatter under my fist is like a rush."
"Just as long as you don't break anything of mine I like your power as well," she smirked.
Maverick laughed and Evana blushed. "Well! That's a first! You actually do blush!"
Suddenly there was a loud thump. Everyone looked back and saw Skyla laying on the ground. "Looks like sleep finally got to her. I'll get her."
"It's okay. I'll carry her," Maven said as he knelt beside her. He huffed as he lifted her into his arms and started to carry her slowly.
Evana watched. "And you say there is nothing going on between you two..."
"There isn't," he stated quickly. "You just look like you'd rather have your arms around Sarah than Skyla."
"Oooo, smooth, Romeo," she teased.
He blushed and rolled his eyes. "Well you do, don't you?"
"Of course I do. I also want to do more things to her, but this isn't about me, is it?"
"Well it's not about me either," he muttered.
"Let's make it about you," she pressed.
"Evana, I wouldn't push."
"Tell us what it is between you two. One minute I see you kissing in the tree the next you two are ignoring each other."
"It's not like that. It's nothing," he said. "Just drop it. There are more important things than this...."
"We have four days of nothing but walking and each other. You mind as well let it off your mind while she's sleeping. No one here will spill the beans."
"Right. Like she wouldn't know as soon as she wakes up," Sven said with a smirk. "She can see the future, remember?"
Maven tensed at that and finally just ended up nodding and falling silent.
"Why shouldn't she know? If he has feelings for her, he should let her know," Maverick said softly. He looked back at Maven. "If you don't tell her soon, it may be too late."
Evana nodded. "She could die or you could die."
"That's not what I meant but it is a possibility."
Maven sighed. He hadn't been expecting to get ganged up on like this. "As you said. We could die tomorrow, and if we did, what would be the point of saying anything?" He'd rather not go on about his past that he couldn't remember, about the love who hates him, about his homicidal bird, or the fact that despite his age he almost acted younger than she did.
"Because, if it were her that had died, you would forever regret not telling her," Maverick pointed out. "And if it were you who died, she would be broken because you never said anything."
"Yeah...well unfortunately it's just not that simple."
"Yes it is, Maven. It's very simple. It just seems hard because you don't know what will happen after it's out there." Her looked at Skyla in Maven's arms. "What will you do if you let her walk away? What will you do if you wait too late to tell her and she no longer wants you? Will you give up before you even try?"
"That sounds like teenage drama to me. Like something you would go through at sixteen or something," Evana yawned.
Maverick nodded. "That's because it is."
Maven's eyes narrowed as he heard this. "And just what exactly is that suppose to mean?" It was one thing for Skyla to say he acted like a kid, but he didn't like the way Maverick and Evana made it sound.
"He means you are being very childish for your age. You are a year younger than me from what Skyla said when we first met and still you act younger than all of us. Even Lana isn't afraid to let her feelings out. And I know Skyla has told you countless times that she likes you," Evana said. "There girl practically tells everyone she likes you. And yet, there you are...teenage drama when you are twenty-two years old. How in there world did you make it in life?"
Maven closed his eyes. "Fine. If you want to know the reason that she and I have a hard time, it's because somewhere within the span of my life I lost control of my powers. I destroyed an entire village beneath a rock slide. I lost the love of my life because I killed her parents; and then I tried to kill myself which resulted in acute amnesia, meaning that I only remember the last three or four months of my life. Hence the reason that it's hard for me to admit anything to her since she knows more about me then I do."
"Just because you lost your memory, doesn't mean that you can't move on with your life. Obviously your memory may never come back so wasting time on trying to find it rather than making the most of your life now will only cause a lot of frustration. You may look back on this moment and think that you really missed out on something great because you were too busy worrying about the past," Evana said.
"Wow. That's really thoughtful and romantic coming from you," Sven said with a laugh.
Maven just shook his head. "I'd still prefer if we just let this go."
"At least give her the common decency to let her know that you don't want to get involved. At least then she will have some peace and move on without going on in her life thinking she did something wrong. She's had limited human contact, her first experience shouldn't be one that breaks her heart because some guy couldn't come out and tell her the truth," Evana said coldly before taking Sarah's hand again.
"I'm handling this just fine. So please, keep your nose out of our business," he snapped.
"Snap all you want but tampering with a girl’s heart is like messing with the innocence of a newborn baby. It's just wrong!"
Sarah smiled. She'd never seen Evana get so...emotional over something like this. She squeezed her hand as she leaned against her."I'm not messing with her heart!" He glared at her, the air around them heating up.
"Then what would you call it? Pulling strings? Making her believe that there is something there when you obviously don't want to get involved is the same damn thing. The day she realizes that you don't want to be with her, she's going to snap. Some snap hard, breaking their spirits. And some..." she said, her hand tightening hard on Sarah's, "snap back."
Sarah winced, her face paling as a cracking sound came from her hand followed by a scream of pain.
Evana pulled back. "Shit," she looked at Sarah. "Oh, Sarah, I'm sorry. I wasn't paying attention."
Sarah quickly pulled her hand to her, cussing as she cradled it. "I think you broke it," she said, trying to bite back to the pain and nearly biting through her lip in the process.
Evana looked at Boris. "I think you should wake Hailey. It needs to be wrapped and straightened."
Boris nodded and gently nudged Hailey's face. "Hailey, Sarah needs you," he said softly.
Hailey yawned and stretched in his arms. "Is it breakfast time, Teddy?" she asked as she looked up at him with a sleepy face.
Boris smiled and shook his head. "Not quite. Sarah's hand might be broken. We need Super Hailey to help mend it."
She nodded. Shifting in his arms she jumped down and grabbed her bag. Walking over to Sarah, she patted a rock for Sarah to sit. "The doctor is in! You may sit!"
Sarah tried to smile, but all she could muster was not cussing at the girl for being so cheerful. So instead she kept her mouth shut, sat down, and raised her hand for Hailey to look at.
Hailey dug through her bag. She pulled out a needle and some liquid then filled the needle. "For the pain," she said and pulled Sarah's sleeve up to stick her in the arm. She waited for a minute for the medicine to kick in before running her hands over Sarah's. "Not broken. Fractured." She yawned. "Wiggle your fingers." She watched as Sarah did as she asked. Going into her bag, she grabbed a wrap then wrapped her hand. She then pulled out some gel and coated the wrap. Leaning in, she blew on it until the wrap hardened like a cast. She then knocked on it and laughed. "All done! Keep it on for a few weeks and you will be good as new," she promised.
Sarah looked at the others and then at her cast. "So what you're saying is I'm not going to be able to hold a gun for a few weeks...."
She patted Sarah on the head. "Use the other hand!" She grabbed her bag and walked back over to Boris.
Evana helped Sarah stand. "I promise you that I will make this up to you."
Sarah sighed and looked at her injured hand. Looking up at Evana she smirked. "You better. I expect a ring on this hand when it heals," she joked.
Evana laughed. "One for each finger," she promised. "And while you heal, stick close to me. I'll make sure you are safe."
She nodded slowly. "Okay. I think I can manage that."
"Evana, perhaps you shouldn't let your temper get the better of you," Maverick said while watching Hailey cuddle back up in Boris's arms.
Evana snapped her head to him. "Shut up or I'll show you a temper," she warned.
He smiled.
Boris hugged Hailey back to him so that she could sleep once more. By this point he'd completely tuned everyone else out.
Sven watched the scene with amusement. "Oh yes. Xavier knew just who to pick for his little 'family'," he muttered.
"You are on my 'hate list.' Learn to shut the hole in your face or I'll do it for you," Evana said as she cracked her knuckles.
"Kinky."
"Body heat helps...reminds me of the animals I sleep with in the forest," she sad while munching on the cookie.
