"Well this is fucking great. Let me guess, we have to find the rest of it," Evana groaned.
Maverick sighed and rubbed Lana's shoulders.
"No. I have already located the other devices. They all emit the same sort of radiation frequency. You would have to collect the pieces though. However, I will not make you if you do not want to. I can find others. As Lana stated, perhaps you have sacrificed too much already."
"We came all this way to make sure the world would end up a better place for the future. I'll help collect them."
Lana's heart fell. This meant Shepherd would have to be put on hold. "I'll help too..."
"Yeah, I'm in."
"I have nothing better to do, so sure why not?"
"I have never left a job unfinished. I do not intend to do so now."
"Once I finish loading this stuff up I'm gone," Sven stated plainly. "My portion of the job is done."
"Yes. Very well. I expected as much. Though I do think it's fair to warn you that Serena has one of the pieces."
Sven stopped and cringed. "What....?"
He just nodded slowly.
"Serena?" Evana smirked. "Interesting."
"Let's start back to Xavier's to collect ourselves and set out again."
"Agreed. Boris, do you think that we could fit this into the car?"
Boris looked at the device and nodded. "It will make things rather...cramped."
"That's cool. I don't mind someone sitting in my lap." Sven sent some data to one of his more trustworthy contacts. He was marking this place so that he could come back and get the items to sell.
After loading the piece of the A.R.K, they got back in the car and turned around.
Sven smiled as he held Evana in his lap while Maverick drove. "I could get use to this."
"I could break your body in half just for the hell of it."
"You'd miss me too much if you did that. So don't try to play so rough."
"Miss you? I was hoping to see you leave soon."
"You sure? I could have sworn you'd miss me." He grinded his hips upward.
Evana rolled her eyes and crossed her legs. "The sooner you are gone, the easier the rest of the trip will be."
"And why is that?" His hands ran over her thighs.
She grabbed his hand, squeezing it. "Less trouble."
He winced slightly and squirmed beneath her. "But I thought you liked trouble."
"Not when it involves you. Keep your hands to yourself."
"Fine, but the rule applies to you to. No coming into my room and raping me."
"You'll be gone in a few days. And I don't need it that bad."
"A few days? Hah! It will take a week at least to reach Serena."
"Oh, now you are coming?" she smirked. "Serena must have been great in bed."
He stiffened and rolled his eyes. "It's not like that."
"You stiffened....so it's love?"
"No. She just has something of mine that I want to get back."
"Your heart. How cute."
He growled. "I wouldn't presume to know so much. It's very unbecoming."
"Like I care what's unbecoming to you."
"You seem to care enough to be curious about Serena."
"If I was curious about her, I would have already asked a million questions." She moved off him and slipped into Sarah's lap. "Much better."
Sarah smiled at the warm feeling of Evana on her. She looked over at Sven and stuck out her tongue while wrapping her arms around Evana's waist. Evana yawned and closed her eyes. Finally she could sleep. Sven noticed the light tint to Sarah's cheeks as Evana leaned back against her. His lips curved, but he didn't say a word.
Skyla sat up and held out her arm. Zenith landed on her. "You shouldn't have come here in your condition..." she said softly and moved her to the ground to look at her wings. She glanced at Maven. "But...I can't blame you."
Zenith shook her head, her entire body was broken and battered, but she knew something was wrong and she knew where to go. She nudged Maven's cold body and looked up at Skyla with question.
"I...couldn't save him..." she whispered. She pushed some water to Zenith and some food. "We have to wait for Xavier..."
Zenith looked down at the food and water and shook her head. She just hopped onto his chest and laid down. Nothing mattered anymore. Skyla laid back down on the grass. A wolf curled up next to her so she wouldn't be so cold. It didn't matter though.
When they arrived back at the compound, Xavier had Boris move the A.R.K. to his room so that he could examine it more thoroughly. "Hailey sweetie, do you want to help me with the A.R.K.?"
"Yes!"
He smiled and took her hand, lifting her up into his arms as he played with her and started examining the A.R.K.
"I don't get it. How can he be so heartless to everything yet so sweet to her?"
"It's hard to be so cruel to something so innocent," Maverick said as he rocked Angelia.
"I don't think that he's a cruel man. I just think that he's detached from everything."
"Hailey was taken in by one of his close friends. Maybe he feels obligated to take care of her because of that friend."
"It's hard to imagine that someone who feels so detached to humanity could have a friend. Much less sacrifice his own self to take care of someone who meant something to his friend. Xavier is a very...complex person, I guess," he mused softly.
"That friend could have been the only person in the world he trusted."
"True. Though to some degree he would have to trust us. I mean, I wouldn't let someone into my home that I didn't trust. Would you?"
"This home has more cameras in it than a building. I highly doubt we are 'guests.'" He looked at Lana as she peered at Angelia. "Here."
"Wait! I don't-" she started but didn't finish before Maverick had moved Angelia into Lana's arms. Lana paled while holding her small frame. The baby yawned and made a soft sound. Slowly she began to relax.
Maverick smiled and rubbed Angelia's head. "Not so hard, is it?"
"She is precious, Maverick." He whispered softly as he looked down at the small child.
"Thank you," he said.
Angelia started to cry. "Did I hold her too tight?!" Lana pouted.
Maverick moved Angelia over Lana's shoulder and took Lana's hand to pat Angelia's back. She started get quiet.
Boris chuckled and patted Lana's head. "You're nearly as adorable as Angelia is."
"Isn't she though?" Lana blushed. "Go to the room and change her."
"By...myself?"
"I trust you."
Biting her lip, she nodded and walked to Maverick's room.
"You're training her to be a young mother?"
"I want to marry her. And I want her to help me raise Angelia. I'm hoping that one day she will have my children," he said. "But yes...I am."
He nodded slowly and slapped Maverick's back jovially. "You two will make a wonderful couple. I'm certain your children will be strong and adorable!"
"I hope so."
"I know so. While she doesn't quite have birthing hips, she has a few more years to develop. She will be an excellent little mother."
"I want her to learn to care for Angelia before I ask her if she wants my children. By then, I hope she is my wife and Angelia is walking."
"How many children do you plan on having?"
"As many as Lana can be blessed to have," he smiled.
He laughed and nodded. "I'm certain the poor dear will have a bloated belly for quite a while then."
"Yes, she will. As long as she will allow it." He could hear Angelia crying.
Lana screamed. "Maverick! I think she is blowing up!"
"It's spit up, Lana! Wipe her mouth and pat her back," he called with a soft smile.
Boris chuckled. "Ah the joys of parenthood. I wish you well with it my friend."
"Thank you. Do you have plans...to try again?"
"No. I loved my wife and daughter. Being with another woman wouldn't feel right," he said softly.
"Understandably so. Maybe you should think of adoption..." he suggested. "After all, there are a lot of Hailey's out there with no one to take care of them."
Boris paused and thought of that. "That...would be nice."
"Just something to think about so your house isn't so quiet."
"Yes. I think that is something I would like very much. Thank you for the suggestion."
"Glad to help."
He heard the baby cry again and Lana started to panic once more. "I will let you attend to your child," he said as he excused himself to go outside. Once he was outside, he took a breath of fresh air and sighed. Sitting down on the large rock, he stared off into the horizon. His hand reached up and slid beneath his shirt, rubbing the butterfly tattoo he had gotten after leaving his home.
Maverick walked in his room and smiled softly as Lana stood there crying with Angelia. Both were covered in power. "Poor thing," he said walking over to her and wiping some power off her.
As Boris sat outside, he heard a bird chirping. Looking up he watched as a robin flew over and landed on his shoulder. "Hello there little one. Are you one of Skyla's friends?"
Hailey tapped on the A.R.K. "Shiny!"
"Yes it is. It's very shiny, and soon it will be the shiny that saves the whole world."
She ran her hands over some of the buttons. "Cookie?"
He smiled and reached into his pocket and pulled out a cookie. "There you go."
She smiled and sat in the large chair while her legs dangled. Munching on the cookie she started humming.
"So what do you want to do once everyone leaves?" He was tinkering with the machine now, trying to find out how many pieces were missing.
"Go see Nanny Doc!"
"You want to visit his grave?"
"Yes! And make a play house! For Teddy and me!" she giggled.
"But Teddy won't be staying..."
She stopped eating. "Why not?" she pouted.
"Because he will probably end up going back to his home."
"But he lives with me."
"He has another home. The one he lived in before he came here."
"But now he lives with me."
"For now he does, but once all of this is over he won't live with you anymore."
"Then it will never be over," she said with narrow eyes and finished her cookie.
"It will eventually. Probably soon once I get this information loaded."
She grabbed a hammer and started hitting the A.R.K.
"Stop! Stop that, Hailey!" he said, grabbing the hammer fromher and holding her still. "What are you doing?"
"Breaking it! Teddy never leave!"
He sighed and held her close. "You can't keep him forever."
"But he's mine..." she pouted.
He smiled and kissed her forehead. "I know he is sweetie."
She snuggled into him. "I don't want him to go."
"Maybe he won't." He stroked her back as he lifted her closer.
She looked up as Boris stood in the door way. "Birdie!" she pointed out.
"Do you like the bird?" He smiled as it chirped and jumped onto her finger.
Xavier's eyes widened as he saw the bird. "Oh," he whispered. "This changes things. Boris, would you go get Maverick for me?"
Boris nodded. Going down the hall, he knocked on their door. "Maverick, Xavier needs to speak with you."
Hailey played with the bird while sitting in Xavier's lap. Maverick walked in.
"It seems that Skyla is alive and free," he stated as soon as Maverick walked in.
"What..."
"She's alive and probably back in her forest. This little bird is proof. It is the same bird I sent to her."
"You...are certain?" he asked softly while Hailey giggled as the little bird nipped at her cheek.
"Positive."
"We have to go get her," Evana said as she walked in, overhearing them.
"Yes."
"I will leave that up to you. If you want I'll give you the coordinates to her forest."
"We will leave in the morning after a goodnights rest."
"Alright. I will have everything set up for you then." He watched as the bird took off, flying out through the open door. "It seems that her job was done."
Hailey pouted. "Should we all go?"
"No, we are just picking her up. I'll go."
He smiled and patted her head. "It's okay. We'll bake cookies for her return."
Hailey smiled. Maverick looked at Boris. "Would you like to come with me?"
"Yes. I would rather like to be there when you find her then worry until you get back."
"Be ready to leave before the sun is up."
"Okay."
Maverick sighed and rubbed Lana's shoulders.
