Skyla played with the mask on her face. She glanced at Derek then shoved one of the men to have more room.
"Do we really need her awake sir?"
"No, but Shepherd ordered her to be unharmed. Apparently he wants to reward her himself once they find it."
"Like hell he will," Skyla groaned.
"And just what do you think he's going to do?"
"Doesn’t matter. I know what's going to happen."
He smirked. "Keep telling yourself that princess."
"I don't have to tell myself," she said sadly. Looking back out the window, her hands fisted. "I can't change the future..."
"No you can't. But the future is always changing which makes you pretty much pointless."
"I know every outcome, I've seen it altered every possible way. It's only a matter of time now. Soon."
"Listen bitch. I'm getting tired of your ranting. Either shut up or I'll shut you up."
"We do what we have to."
"Fuck it. Stab her," he muttered.
The guards were all too happy to push the tranquilizer in her to shut her up.
While Skyla slowly slipped off she glanced at Derek. "Just to warn you...you will die...screaming...." she whispered and went limp.
"You know what? I predict that she's going to be fucked and killed when this is all over."
A few hours later, Skyla woke up as she was nudged. She shook off the tranquilizer and stepped out of the car. Looking over at another car she saw Maven and the others get out. They stood in a desert. Nothing was seen, nothing but sand. "I told you...it's hidden."
"Yeah, well if you want me to hold up my end of the bargain then I'm going to need a hell of a lot more than that."
"I can't do anything with this stuff on and you know that."
"Then you can just stand there." He nodded to his troops. "Sweep out with the equipment. See what you can find."
Skyla sat down in the sand. "Good luck. You won't find it," she yawned. "Hey while you are play treasure hunter, can I make a sand castle?"
Shepherd didn't even pay attention o her. This was the place. It had to be. "Search faster damn it!"
She sat there smiling and watching. Glancing over at Maven she waved. "Hello, Maven. I've missed you."
Maven just stared straight ahead, his position one of a soldier at ease.
She looked at Farrah. Farrah seemed to be doing her best not to look at her. "Hello, Farrah. Don't you look lovely with your bruises and good arm?"
"Shut the fuck up," she snapped.
"Awww...why so mean to me?" Skyla pouted.
"Because when this is through you'll be nothing more than a painful memory."
"So you say. But I can promise you, Farrah dear, nothing is going to be so easy to predict."
"What part of shut the fuck up did you fail to grasp?"
"It's it a beautiful night! I've never seen the desert and so many stars!" she smiled. Standing she let her bare feet play with the sand. "How's it coming, Shepherd?"
"Sir! We've found something!"
Shepherd looked back at her and smiled. "Good."
She only smiled. "Run! Hurry and go look at the can he found!"
Shepherd rolled his eyes, wanting desperately to shoot her in the head. The soldiers were quickly moving away dust and sand, revealing the start of a large metal object. "We've finally found it," Shepherd whispered as his hands ran over the metal.
Skyla laid in the sand with a yawn. "Right..."
As the soldiers worked, several powers came into play as the sand and dirt all but disappeared. Soon the opening to an underground facility could be made out. "Maven, come here," he ordered.
Maven snapped to attention and walked toward the door.
"Open it."
"He can't. I told you. It won't work against our powers. You never listen to me. Go on, Maven. Try really really hard. It won't budge."
Maven didn't listen to her. He held his hands out and the doors began to shake. Just as soon as he applied any sort of pressure, however, he was sent flying back by some invisible force. "Interesting," Shepherd smirked. "Looks like we'll be doing this the old fashioned way." With that he began barking orders and guards moved to get the door open.
"Oh my God! Did it not work! No way! How could she possibly know that?! Could it be..." Skyla said in a shocked face, "that she can see into the future!? Amazing!"
"When this is over I'm going to shoot her in the face," Farrah muttered. "So many times...."
"Of course you are," Skyla rolled her eyes and stood. Now was the time. She was unable to see anything beyond this point. For the next few minutes she would be blank, however, she knew what would happen after it. And she only hoped that everything would go according to plan. She would need Boris's and Evana's strength, Maverick's speed, and Hailey's knowledge of the human body. Walking over to Maven, she stood next to him. "I love you. I'm sure you know that. In the next few minutes...I can't protect you..." she whispered.
"Get back," Farrah ordered as she shoved Skyla to the ground. Shepherd smiled as the doors to the vault opened for him.
"Finally!" he laughed.
"Goodbye...Maven..." Skyla whispered to herself and looked away as tears fell from her eyes.
Shepherd stopped as he looked inside. So much equipment...but where was it? "Search for it," he growled. Walking over to the three of them, he glared hard at Skyla. "You better be telling the truth."
"At this very moment...nothing is what it seems. Everything I do, everything I say is for a reason. Did you honestly think that I would risk the lives of millions of people just for my life or Maven's? I would rather die. Shoot me, Shepherd. Because you will never find it. I will never tell you," she said as she stood there. Her hands fisted. This was the moment. The unpredictable moment. The moment that would change...everything.
Shepherd's eyes narrowed. "I see." He reached for his gun and fired without hesitation. Maven fell to the ground, blood pooling from his face.
Skyla turned her head away as it was fired. Her body shook with pain and heartache. But it was ok. Maven would understand. This was for the best. In these next few moves, everything would change, and she would be out of their reach with Maven's body. She jerked at her hands, the chain broke on the cuffs, freeing her hands. Using Maverick's speed and Hailey's knowledge, she quickly hit spots all over Farrah's body, making her unable to move. She moved to Shepherd and punched his head, the mechanical head few off and he hit the ground. Turning to the others, she picked up Shepherds gun and fired so fast they were all dead before they knew what was happening. Finally she moved to Derek. She immobilized him just like Farrah then stood over both of them.
"This is twice I let you live," she said to them. "I promise you, there will not be a third time. Tell Shepherd he will never find me." She used the strength to pull all the equipment off her just as a horse ran up to her. Lifting Maven, she set him on the horse then got on behind him and took off.
Skyla looked at the sky as she rode hard. Her arms were wrapped tightly around Maven's body. Tears poured from her eyes. It was all up to Xavier.
"We can stop here for tonight. Tomorrow we can push through to the vault," Xavier said with a small yawn. "No point in pushing ourselves too hard."
"No, we will continue until we are there," Maverick said and looked at Sarah who kept driving.
"You're persistent aren't you? At this continued rate of speed we will get there by noon if we're lucky. A few hours of sleep won't change what will come."
"Then go to sleep, Xavier. If we couldn't take the time to go back for the others then we won't take the time for you to sleep on the grass. When you are tired, Sarah, I'll switch with you."
"I'm fine," she assured him.
"Other," he stated. "If my calculations are correct, one of them is probably dead by now."
Maverick only nodded. "I assumed as much..."
"So all in all there is very little worry about. Everything will proceed how it is suppose to. That is one of the joys of life."
"Xavier, shut up. They may seem like nothing to you, but they are something to me. So shut up." He looked back at him. "I mean it. Until we get there, shut up."
He smiled at that. "You see, this is why I'm not a people person. It's hard for me to relate to these emotions of attachment. It's much easier to deal with computers. If they die you can always get a new one.
Evana reached over and grabbed his laptop. Throwing it in the front seat, she glared at him. "You were told to shut the fuck up."
"Please, must you really get so hostile? You were the ones who drug me from my place to come here after all."
Evana punched him in the face and he blacked out. "Problem solved."
"Yes, that is one problem solved. I just wish that all of our current problems were so easy to fix."
"One at a time, Boris..." Maverick whispered.
It was noon the next day when the horse finally came to a stop, falling on the ground with Skyla and Maven. Maven's body was cold and Skyla was exhausted. She petted the horse and thanked it before going to the river and getting some water for it. Finally, she was back home where she belonged. Pulling Maven's body under a tree, she silently started undressing him to clean his body. It was hard when every time she wiped something off him, a tear would take its place. Her animal friends gathered around, bringing her food or gifts, none of which she accepted. She looked up at the sun. At that very moment, Xavier was walking up to the real vault where the A.R.K was.
He fixed his glasses as he examined teh door. It was a simple door to a simple building. It was shielded by the canyon and stood just as perfectly as it always had. With the information from the Xeno facility, he had surmised that there were only thirteen areas around the world protected by natural developments that would shield them from nuclear blasts. This was one of them, and thus the most logical. His fingers danced upon the door before nodding to Boris. "Break it down."
Boris nodded and with a simple kick the door went flying.
"This is it? This is the vault?" Sarah groaned. The place was nothing more than a small wooden house, its furniture a mess and the place covered in dust. "This can't be right."
"Sometimes the most complex things are hidden in the most simplest of places," Maverick smiled and he walked inside.
"Yes. Didn't anyone tell you it's not the outside that counts...its the inside." He smiled as he saw the faint flicker of electronics. "Oooh!"
Lana walked behind Maverick, holding his shirt from the bottom as she looked around. "This is what we sacrificed so much for?"
"Sacrificed? No. More like you...donated toward," he mused as he began toying with the electronics.
"Just do your thing so we can leave."
"It's not fair that you should be upset with me. After all you were the one who broke my nose."
"If you don't get the fuck to work, I'll break your face. Hurry up."
He sighed and shook his head. "No manners what so ever." The lights on the console turned green and he smiled. "Going down?"
Maverick looked at Sven. He didn't see anything worth selling in here.
When no one answered his question, he shrugged. "Oh well. See you in a bit." As he said this, the ground beneath him lowered and he disappeared beneath the house, immediately closing up afterward so no one could follow.
Everyone else sat and waited.
"So...we just going to trust him to do whatever he's doing down there?"
"Like any of us know what to do ourselves. After he's done, I'm going home."
"Just like that? You're not even going to bask in the glory of being a hero?"
"Why? No one will care until the grass is green again and the smog is gone. That's not going to happen overnight."
"You don't know that. I mean, do any of us really know what this A.R.K. does other than what he told us it does?"
"Don't care. Just want to go home."
He nodded slowly. "Yeah, resting back in Paradise does sound pretty good." He looked at the others and leaned back against the wall. "Where's your home at Evana?"
"The same city as Maverick, just the other side," she smirked.
"You've been that close all along?"
"Yeah, never could leave the city life."
"What city is it?"
"Colvent."
"I've been down there a few times on jobs. Nice city. Terrible smell though."
"Pretty much."
"I assume that you'll be going back to your home as well to raise your daughter?"
"Assuming the job is done and it's safe to go home."
"What about you Lana. What will you do after this?"
Lana shifted and looked up at Maverick. "I'm...going with Maverick..."
Sven smirked, but didn't say what he was originally going to. "So are you going to be a nanny for the kid or...?"
"Um...well...I don't-""Angelia has a nanny. Lana is not a nanny."
"So what is she then?"
"My fiance."
At that Sven cracked up. When no one joined in on his laughter he shook his head. "Wait...you're serious?"
"I have no shame in deciding to settle down or Lana being the one that I wish to settle with," Maverick said as Lana blushed and looked at the ground.
"Oh, no of course not. More power to you I guess," he said with a shrug.
Evana looked at Lana. "You seem a little shocked at this..."
"Mostly because she hasn't accepted yet. But she will," he said and pushed her hair from her face and lifted her chin.
"So you can predict the future now?" Sarah smirked.
Maverick smiled. "It's only a matter of time before she accepts while living in my home."
"I guess so. Lucky," she smiled as she nudged Lana.
Lana shifted. "Oh...um...thank you..."
"So what do you plan on doing when this is all over, Sarah?"
Sarah sighed and shrugged. "What I had hoped to do will never happen.... So I'll probably end up traveling. My home doesn't feel like home anymore, and I still plan on killing Shepherd."
"Yes...Shepherd."
Sarah looked up at Evana, but quickly looked away and laid down to look up at the ceiling.
"Maybe I could come with you...I have nothing better to do and I really hate this Shepherd guy."
"I want to go too." Maverick looked at her in shock. "If there is any chance that Skyla or Maven is alive...I want revenge...it's just not right for someone to control another persons life like that..."
Maverick sighed. "Then I will come as well. I can't leave her alone and you could use the help."
"I want to go too!" Hailey smiled.
Boris smiled and nodded. "Yes. I cannot leave knowing that our friend might still be alive and need in help."
Sarah sat up, surprised by this. "R-really?"
"I suppose most of us will be going with you then, Sarah."
She nodded slowly. "I would like that."
Sven rolled his eyes at this. They were all risking their lives for what?
It got quiet after that.
"Not be the one to burst your bubble or anything, but as far as we know the only two people that would know where to look or Zenith and Xavier. Seeing as how the bird is back at the base recovering, and Xavier is about as trust worthy as most Raiders, how exactly would you find them?"
"Once Xavier gets what he wants, I'm sure we can ask for information on Shepherd. After all, he doesn't like him either."
"Yeah, I guess you're right. He would be more inclined to help....." He sighed and closed his eyes. "Good luck with that."
Several minutes later the machines activate and Xavier was brought back to the top. "Well, that is disappointing."
He reached out for a piece of paper and began writing things down, completely ignoring all of them as he walked about muttering to himself.
Evana yawned. Maverick shrugged. "Let's go." They nodded and started out.
Xavier sat down in one of the derelict chairs. "I wouldn't if I were you."
"We aren't going to play the guessing game with you, Xavier. Either tell us or we leave."
Xavier looked up from what he was writing and looked at them, surprised to see them standing there. "Oh, you're still here? That's good. It seems we're not through after all."
Maverick rolled his eyes. “Cut to the fucking chase."
"Right. I guess you guys should see it." He stood and walked over to the panel and activated it. "Well? Are you coming? You want answers then hurry up."
Evana crossed her arms. It was obvious all of them thought this was a waste of time. They walked over to the panel.
He activated the machine and they were all taken down to the lower level which was an enormous warehouse full of all sorts of items from varying decades of war. Sven whistled as he saw the large site before him. "I'm never going to have to work again."
Xavier led them over to a large device. It looked like a combination between a generator, a bomb, and a computer. "This is the A.R.K. Unfortunately, it is only part of the A.R.K."
"Do we really need her awake sir?"
"No, but Shepherd ordered her to be unharmed. Apparently he wants to reward her himself once they find it."
"Like hell he will," Skyla groaned.
"And just what do you think he's going to do?"
