When Maverick walked in his room he froze. There was Lana breast feeding and Evana and Sarah sitting next to her. The maid was groaning in the corner but when she saw him she stood.
"I tried to stop it..."
Lana went to move. "Don't jostle her, you'll make her choke," Evana said softly.
"Evana? What is going on?" Maverick said as he stood at the door.
"Lana's breast feeding the baby," Sarah said. It was pretty obvious.
"How...is that possible?" he said in shellshock.
"I told her it was a stupid idea, Sir. I tried-"
"I'm not talking to you so shut up," he said and she closed her mouth. He turned back to Lana. Closing the door he walked over to them.
"I...got this shot from Xavier... Breast feeding is better for the baby...I thought...I thought..." she said softly.
"Maverick," Evana whispered. "Say something before she cried."
He nodded. "This...is just so shocking. I had thought of asking you but not until you accepted my proposal. I didn't think you would do it on your own..."
"She didn't. Sven suggested it."
"Oh?" He moved on the bed and in front of Lana. "How unlike him. What did he want?"
"Apparently he wanted to be able to smoke in the house again," she smirked.
"That will not happen. Not now for sure. And not around Lana." He pushed Lana's hair from her face. "Are you comfortable? Feeling ok?"
"Um yes..." she said with a blush. "You are ok with me doing this?"
"Yes, of course. I think of Angelia as your child too." He looked at Evana. "I know you helped. Thank you."
"Glad I could. I needed to make up for some things," she said softly.
"I didn't blame you," he whispered.
She only nodded.
"Come on, Evana," Sarah said when she felt the silence was too thick. "Let's leave the love birds alone."
Evana patted Lana's back and walked out with Sarah. Maverick moved next to Lana. He looked at his maid. "Why are you standing there? Leave." She nodded and rushed out. Looking back at Lana he smiled. "Tell me everything I missed."
She blushed. "It's an embarrassing story..."
Xavier whistled as he slid the blade down Maven's chest. "Looks like you didn't survive this one. Pity." His blade began to knife through organs so that he could study them.
In the morning, Skyla sat with the others at breakfast. She explained what happened as they listened then afterwards watched all their faces in the silence.
"We're going to find the missing pieces of the A.R.K. but if you don't want to go, then that's perfectly under stable," Boris said softly.
"No, I have to go. I’ve already seen what will happen if I don't. I like the outcome better if I do go," she said as she sipped her tea. "This is nice...being with all of you again. I spent so much time in silence in that forest they built."
"Well we're glad you're here even if you are slightly creepier than before," Sven said.
She nodded. "I can understand that. My time away has been unkind to my personality."
"It's not your personality that bothers me it's the fact that you can put thoughts in people that bothers the hell out of me."
"Yes, I know. I'm sorry."
"Just don't use your powers on me and we'll be fine. I don't want to wake up one day and find out that I'm gay," he smirked, trying to comfort her.
She smiled. "I promise to never use my powers on any of you unless I have to or unless you ask."
"Define 'unless you have to'?" Sven said slowly. "I wouldn't mind you pushing me out of the way of a bullet, but I don't want you fixing my mind so that I can handle trauma or something."
"I mean, unless your life is in danger," she assured him.
"That's reassuring."
"Yeah.... I'm not certain I like that."
"If you would rather me let you die, I can do that," she said and sipped her tea. "I don't mind." Lana's eyes widened.
"If you know what's going on, why don't you just tell us what will happen?"
"Telling the future to you would only make you cockier. And a cocky person dies first."
He honestly didn't know what to say to that. Whatever Skyla was...she wasn't anymore.
She set her tea down. "I'm sorry I've changed so much. I know what all of you are thinking just by looking at your eyes. I'm...trying to be who I was before..." she explained softly. "But it's hard when you have been through so much in a short time..."
"No one blames you," Maverick said.
"We understand..."
"Pardon my intrusion, but could I get a help carrying these out?" Xavier had as he held up a small cooler full of ice...and some of Maven's organs.
Skyla stood. "Excuse me," she said and walked to her room.
"Bastard," Evana said coldly.
Xavier looked confused. "What?"
"Her first love is dead and you are taking him apart like an experiment. Holding his organs out is the same thing as slapping her in the face and saying 'get over it.'"
Hailey tugged at his shirt. "Bad Nanny Xavier. I like Skyla!"
Xavier looked down at Hailey and sighed. "I guess that I might have over stepped my bounds, but it's not as if his body is going to come back to life. If I can study his organs who knows what all we could learn from them."
"It doesn't matter. You need to learn to grow a heart," Evana said coldly. Hailey nodded her head over and over.
"I have a heart." He was half tempted to hold up the container and let them know that he had two if you counted Maven's. Scooping Hailey up with his free arm, he held her against him.
"You should be nicer," she said and knocked on his head. "Nanny Doc says a broken heart is worse than dying. Skyla is dying, Nanny Xavier," she pouted. "That is very sad."
"Unfortunately there is not much else that I can do for her. She is upset about Maven's passing. That is understandable, but it is beyond even my scope to bring the dead back to life."
She leaned her head on his shoulder. "Nanny Doc says the dead still lives in those who loved them."
"That is true I guess. I'd never really thought about it like that." He looked around at the others who were glaring at him. "I am not good with people. You know this. If you want to help her then do what you can."
"She doesn't need help...she needs friends. She needs someone to tell her the pain will go away and that she didn't make the wrong choice when she gave Shepherd the wrong vault," Lana said softly.
"Then that is what you need to be for her."
Lana opened her mouth but stopped. She looked down at her shirt as her nipples let out some milk. "Excuse me," she said quickly and rushed to Maverick's room.
Xavier smiled. "I'm glad to see that shot is working successfully."
"She's still adjusting. Angelia has bounded with her because of it."
"That's how I bond with most of the females I know. Sucking on their breasts is always a good way to start a relationship." He smirked.
"Oh shut up, Sven. No one gives a fuck."
"What? Hey. I'm the good guy here."
"No, you are not. You are the pervert that gets off when a seventeen year old is breast feeding an infant."
He rolled his eyes at that. "She's a child. I prefer full grown women."
"Then keep your mouth shut."
"Must we keep up this tired charade? You tell me to shut up. I don't. You get mad. End of story."
"I could just knock you out."
"You've never done so before andwon't start now."
She stood and punched him in the face. He hit the ground, out cold.
Sarah sighed. "That wasn't necessary."
"He challenged me. He asked for it."
"Yeah. That he did, but he's going to be pissed when he wakes up."
"So what? He's always pissed about something."
She smiled. "Yeah, but I'd rather have him pissed than whiny."
"I could care less," she said.
Maverick stood with a sigh and walked over Sven's body. He went to his room and closed the door behind him. Lana was feeding Angelia. "I bought a pump this morning. It will be here tomorrow."
"Hailey, I want to talk you about something. Let's go to my office," Xavier said, tugging her along with him. "Did Doc ever tell you about our Lazarus project?"
"Umm..." she thought hard. "I don't remember..."
"Oh...I was sincerely hoping he had." Upon opening his door, he set her down on the autopsy table beside Maven's body.
"Is it about bring the dead back? Resetting the body?"
"Yes, actually. We never finished the project. Too many ethical parts bothered Doc so he took his part of the research and left."
"The lala game!" she said and clapped her hands.
"Lala game?"
"Yes! He told me a game to restart the body! The lala game! I wrote it down!" she said. "I had to because there were so many rules and he said I had to follow all of them or I lose! But I always won! It's how I got my doggy Fred!"
"Fred?"
"My doggy...but..I killed him...it was an accident. I thought he was the boogie man. I could have brought him back with the lala game but Nanny Doc said me having a pet wasn't very wise."
"Yeah. I think that he was right about that. Pets probably aren't the best thing." He smiled as he rubbed her head. "Do you think that you could write down all the rules for me?"
"It's in my bag! He made me promise never to have a sleep over without it!"
Xavier couldn't help but to laugh at that. This was a sleep over? "Okay. Go get it for me please."
"Ok!" She ran out of the room and to her room. Going through her things, she pulled out a thick notebook. It was covered in stickers and glitter. On the cover it said "LALA GAME. TO HAILEY LOVE NANNY DOC." She ran back to Xavier and gave it to him. "Here you go!"
He took the book and red through it. He began to immediately input the data into his computer. "This could actually work," he whispered.
"It's never failed!"
"How many successful tests have you done?"
"Fred, Mini, Gogo, Hats, Giggles, Bock Bock, Mr. Hails, Mr. Troy, Mrs. Tiny," she said as she named off animal names and people. "I don't remember the rest. They are in the book!" she pointed.
He flipped through it, surprised by all the data. "He was so against it before." He shook his head. "If you knew that you could bring people back...why didn't you bring Doc back?"
"I don't have four hands..." she said softly. "It's a game for two players."
Looking at the materials needed he shook his head slowly. "At best I might have enough resources to do this once," he whispered. "It would take me years before I could even think about doing another."
"Are we going to play?"
He looked at her and nodded. "Hailey. Do you want us to play and bring Doc back?"
She grabbed the book and flipped the back page. She pointed to one of the rules. "The body must not be more than a week dead. The risk of bacterial infection greatly increases after a week," she read. She sat down. "Nanny Doc would not live long after I won...the bacteria would kill him..."
He knelt down and cupped her face. Biting his lip, he kissed her forehead. "I'm sorry."
Her lip quivered. "I promised...to be strong..." she whispered.
"Doc had the way to bring them back, but my data was what would keep them alive," he whispered. "If you wanted to, we could try. Perhaps I could bring Doc back and keep him alive for you."
She bit her lip. "What would Nanny Doc say?"
"I don't know. It has been quite a while since we last spoke."
She shifted in her seat and thought for a very long time in silence. "Nanny Doc always said that I shouldn't make big decisions without him..."
His face softened when she said this. "Doc can't be there for you now, sweetie. You have to be a big girl."
"But I don't want to," she pouted. "I'm only this many," she added and held up six fingers.
He smiled and nodded. "Then answer me this. Do you want Doc back?"
"Yes...but I do not want him back only to lose him a second time."
He nodded slowly. "I will have his body brought here. I can only revive one person.... That person will be Doc. I'll run all the tests beforehand, but you will have Doc back."
"No!" she yelled. "No!"
"Huh? What is it?"
"I have Nanny Xavier and I have Teddy...but Skyla only had Maven..." she said softly. "I will not play the game for personal gain. It's rule number one."
"But Doc would be...." He hated to say it, but Doc could help him. Maven couldn't. "Doc is the logical choice. He still has all his organs. Maven...does not. If I don't bring Doc back now, there's a chance I never can."
"Nanny Doc once said to me a long time ago that if I was given a chance to save a broken heart that I should never hesitate. I can save Skyla's heart, Nanny Xavier...I can make Nanny Doc proud," she said as her small hands cupped his face.
"Is this really what you want? You'd be okay giving up Doc forever?"
She smiled. "I know Nanny Doc is inside of my heart. He is never really gone. I know that he is with me and because of that it's ok for me to let go. Now...it is your turn to let him go."
Xavier's eyes widened as she said this. "I let him go a long time ago."
She kissed his forehead. "Then this should not be so hard for you to accept."
"I'm...accepting it just fine. I'm just worried that you might regret your decision later."
"I regret nothing I do!" she laughed. "Nanny Doc made it a rule!"
"Not all rules are easy to follow."
"Then you should learn to be a big boy."
He smiled at that. "I am a big boy."
She patted his cheek. "Then rules shouldn't be hard to follow," she smiled. "Cookie?"
He closed his eyes. "Yes. Cookie," he whispered. Standing he went over and opened a new box of cookies and handed her one.
She hopped off the chair and hugged his leg. "Nanny Doc would be proud of you," she said and rushed out. As soon as she opened the door and started running out, she ran right into Skyla's arms. Her eyes widened as Skyla sat on her knees crying as she held Hailey close. "Ms. Skyla?"
"Thank you, Hailey. Thank you so much," Skyla whispered.
He sat at his computer running through the simulations. Taking off his glasses, he ran his hands through his hair and sighed. "I'm sorry Doc," he whispered.
Skyla finally let Hailey go and she ran off to play. Slowly she stood and walked to Xavier's door. "I know...you loved him. I know you miss him. And I know that I don't deserve to beg for Maven to have a third chance at life knowing what I know...but if you go through with this...if you do this...I promise, Xavier...I will be indebted to you for the rest of my life..." she said softly. "I understand why it's so hard for you to not take the chance and bring Doc back...a second chance with him could do so much for you... But I too...want a second chance...to love..."
Xavier turned around and looked at her. He sighed as he closed his eyes. "I failed Doc. It was my fault that things happened as it did." Crossing his hands in front of his face, he opened his eyes to look at her. "I will do what I can for you. Doc wouldn't want to be brought back. Not like this...."
"Would...you like me to show you...what it would be like if your brought Doc back?" she asked softly.
He thought about it for a moment. What could be the harm in that? "Yes," he whispered.
Skyla walked over to him. "I promise I will not alter the truth," she assured him. One over her hands went to his face.
A beautiful scene was shown to him of Doc coming back. He held Hailey in his arms as she told him of everything he missed. Three nights were spent in Xavier's bed making passionate love. She showed him talking to the others, learning of their lives and abilities...then it showed a fight with him and Xavier.
"You took the girls heart, Xavier! You took it right from her when you knew you could have given her peace! I was already dead and Hailey was happy! She was ok with it!" He paced in Xavier's room. "Have you seen the girl's face?!? Have you seen the broken heart she has? All because you got selfish! You just couldn't do the right thing and bring the boy back! She's still in her room, still crying! The only person who wanted me back was you and for what? So you could say you were sorry for being selfish and for putting your stupid experiments first?! You are still selfish! You are still the same person I left all those years ago!" He stomped out. Xavier stood and ran after him, but Doc picked up Hailey and got in the car. He drove away.
A year later, Hailey was standing back at Xavier's door crying. Doc had died of a bacterial infection.
"I tried to stop it..."
Lana went to move. "Don't jostle her, you'll make her choke," Evana said softly.
"Evana? What is going on?" Maverick said as he stood at the door.
