Chapter One - Different, Yet The Same
“Ahh!” The younger girl jumped back.
“So, it's alive,” The older one rolled her eyes. The older man lifted his head.
“Where am I?” He asked, looking around, almost worried.
“Northern Europe. You know, the Nordic region,” The younger girl smiled at him.
“That's not important! Now, I wanna know who the Hell are you and why are you all the way up here, you piggish Roman!” The older girl snarled at the man.
“I'm Gaius—“ He paused and suddenly thought to himself.
Wait, this girl knows I'm Roman, and obviously does not like them. Also, these two do not recognize me, so maybe I won't tell them who I really am...
“Gaius, huh? Well, Caesar, I'm Katrin and this is Enid,” The older girl put her hands on her hips.
“Please to meet you both,” Gaius stood up.
“Likewise!” Enid curtsied to him.
“Yeah,” Katrin rolled her eyes again.
“Katrin, let him come with us! Please!” Enid gave her a sad-puppy dog look.
Him?! With us?! That Roman pig?! What is she thinking? Does she like him or something? I mean, he looks old enough to be grandfather to the both of us! Aw damn, she's giving me THAT look!
“Okay, Fine! He can come with us, for now,” Katrin shook her head and began walking.
“Come on Gaius!” Enid took his hand and they followed her.
“Hey Caesar, how old are you anyways?” Katrin glared at him.
“Fifty four. You?” Gaius raised his left eyebrow.
“Twenty-five,” She groaned.
“I'm fifteen!” Enid squeezed his hand tightly.
“Really? That young? I would have said you were twenty!” Gaius looked dumbfounded, “You young girls keep looking older and older everyday!” He shook his head.
“Aww, you don't look your age either!” She blushed.
“No, you look more closer to a thousand,” Katrin mumbled.
“Katrin! That's mean!” Enid pouted.
“It's okay, I've met girl like her before,” Gaius sighed, “Where are we going?”
“Not anywhere really. We're like drifters. We moved around, never knowing what, where, or who we'll run into next,” Enid stopped to pick up a flower, then handed it to Gaius.
“Sounds fun! Oh, and thank you dear!” He smiled, with a hint of red coming to his face.
After a few hours of trucking along, they came to a small village and stayed at local inn. Rooms were scarce, so the three of them we forced to share one. They made three beds out of straw and cloth on the floor.
“Enid, my dear, can I ask you something?” Gaius tapped her shoulder, which was covered only by the thin strap of her almost sheer nightgown.
“Yes?” She looked up at him.
“Why does Katrin call me `Caesar'?”
“Probably because you look like a rich and greedy Roman,”
“Does she know anything of the Great Gaius Julius Caesar?”
“Not really. She doesn't know much about Roman period. All she knows is that she hates them for killing her family,”
“Oh..”
Katrin came back into the room with some bottles of beer and they all sat on their beds and drank it.
“So, now that we have to stand each other for the night, might as well break the ice. How did a Roman pig get lost all the way up here?” Katrin gulped some beer down.
“Well, I'm not entirely sure. I figure I was kidnapped and dumped off. All I know is, one night I was sleeping happily in my bed, then the next thing I know, I'm lying on the ground under a tree!” He shook his head and took a drink.
“Got a family at all? Don't worry Katrin, I told him about yours,” Enid sat her bottle down.
“Oh, thanks twerp. Now he's gotta feel pity for me,” Katrin rolled her eyes.
“I will not feel pity if you wish me not to,” Gaius glanced at her.
“Then I wish you not,”
“Then I won't. Anyway, my family. I have two sons. The older one is a bright boy, much like his father,”
“Oh please,” Katrin whispered to herself.
“And the younger one, well, he's a bit of a trouble maker,” Gaius turned his head to the window.
“Have a wife?” Enid asked.
“Did. She died a few months ago of a horrible illness. Not sure what it was, but she was in horrible pain the last year of her life,” A tear ran down the side of his cheek. Enid crawled over and hugged him.
“Thank you,” He hugged her back.
“Get a room you two!” Katrin laughed.
“We can't! There aren't any left!” Enid joined her.
Soon all three of them were laughing their heads of over…nothing really.
“So, what you're saying is your family lives back in Ireland?” Gaius giggled.
“Well duh!” I'm a Celt, where else are they going to live? Egypt?!” Enid fell to her back and snorted.
“I was amazed her father just let go of and explore like this! So young!” Katrin shook her head and smiled.
“Well, he trusts you! And besides, you were only 11 when you lost…well, yeah,” Enid sighed.
“Right, well, I'd say we're all three so different, yet oddly, somewhere inside us, we're the same,” Gaius stated.
“Well, if we keep drinking and laughing, we'll all die the same!” Katrin began laughing hysterically.
“I know! I'm gonna bust a gut here!” Enid held her stomach, laughing as hard as ever.
“We better get to sleep then girls!” He sat all the bottles aside and pulled a blanked over himself.
“Right!” Enid calmed down and snuggled up in hers. Katrin rolled over away from the both of them.
“Good night Katrin! Good night Gaius!” Enid yawned.
“Night darlings,” Gaius yawned as well. Katrin said nothing, but thought “Good night.”
