"A monster," he whispered, his hands cupping her face. "But it does make me happy to know that somewhere inside of you does care about me."
Aura blushed. "W-what...?"
"I can tell it in the way you look at me. A part of you, however small cares."
"You...are all sweet again..." She smiled. "Maybe I should hit you more..."
"I am not particularly fond of pain," he grinned. "Though I am happy that you seem happy to see me."
"How...long do you think you have...before you forget again?"
"I am not certain. My head seems fairly clear right at this moment."
"But you won't remember later?"
"I cannot say for certain. This is only the second time I have had such clarity since my fall."
She moved his head into his lap. "Why...do you care that I care?"
"I believe a more appropriate question would be, why do you care that I care?" He grinned up at her, wincing as he touched the growing bruise. "But to answer your question, it is because I like the fact that you care about me. That despite my abrasive nature and hostile tendencies, you have not pulled from me."
"You are very cold...and cruel...you make it very hard to not want to pull away..." she whispered. "But then...you...you say things like that and become so sweet...and all I can think about is how young I must really be to have a growing crush on someone I don't know anything about..."
His lips parted, his face softening while he reached up and caressed her cheek. "You have a crush on me?"
"Somewhat...more so when you are like this...what girl wouldn't be when you are like this?"
"I was not aware that I was all that charming. I always thought that I was rather awkward," he chuckled.
"Charming...yes. That's a good word for it."
"Well thank you. The last person which told me that...is gone now."
She frowned. "Your wife..."
"Yes. Heaven took her and drained the very essence of her life...."
"And you think killing innocent people will save them?"
"I do not intend to take innocent lives. There are ways to save them, but in order to do that I must first eliminate the angels. I must defeat my brother."
"That's not what you have been saying. You want them all dead. Innocent or not..."
He sighed and nodded. "It seems that whatever they did diminished my mental capacities as well. I am hardly better than a savage beast. Though I may so those things, I hardly mean most of what I say. I am very much just acting on raw emotion and feeling."
She pushed his hair from his face. "Maybe...I can fix that... People alter people all the time. What if...what if I just...fix you?"
"It is not that simple, I'm afraid. What they did was quite extensive, trying to erase whatever memory I might retain. The technology here is nothing compared to the technology in Heaven. I am afraid that I will be forever stuck like this."
She frowned. "I see..."
"You seem more upset than I am..."
She shook her head. "I should fix your head. Just wait here."
"I won't move," he promised.
She stood and went to her bedroom. Pulling out some bandages and things she returned. He sat up when she came back, smiling at her when she held up the bandages. Cleaning his wound, she bandaged it then ran her fingers softly over it. "Better?"
"Much," he said, staring into her eyes, his face now inches from hers.
She blushed and very slowly pulled back. Before she could pull back completely he leaned forward and lightly brushed her lips with his. Her eyes widened and for a moment, she thought about pulling away, but decided against it. Slowly she leaned in and wrapped her arms around his neck. His hands slid to her waist, slowly pulling her down into his lap as he deepened the kiss. Her skirt moved up her thighs as she moved her legs on each side of him. Her lips washed over his, nibbling and licking while her heart went in over drive. His tongue flicked over her parted lips darting into her mouth as he sucked on her tender flesh, urging her tongue into his own mouth while his hands slid up her thighs, pushing beneath her skirt. Her tongue slipped in his mouth and she pressed tightly to him. He sucked on her tongue, twirling it in his mouth while his fingers pressed against her panties, sliding between her legs and stroking her.
She quickly pulled back. "Please don't...I couldn't bare it if you forgot and I was left here in your arms like a fool..."
He nodded slowly, kissing and sucking on her neck. "Yes...I can feel myself slipping already." She pulled from him and stood. Fixing herself and turning her back to him, she put her goggles back on and started working again. It was only a few minutes later before he was groaning and rubbing his head. "Fuck that hurts. You could have warned me sooner about that."
"Sorry..." she whispered.
"Yeah, yeah...so are you working on my sword yet?"
"No. I told you. I won't help you."
"Oh come on!" He walked over and turned her around. "Look at me. I will do whatever it is that you want me to do so that you will make me a damn sword. See? I'm playing nice!"
"Let go of me!"
"Not until you agree to make my sword."
"I said no!"
"I won't take no for an answer."
"Too bad!"
"There has to be something you want! Something that you need! Just tell me so I can get a new sword!"
"You don't have anything I want or need! So just go ask someone else!"
"No! I want you to make it."
"I'm not doing it!"
He bit his lip. "Please!?"
"No."
"Damn it! Don't make me fucking hurt you to get what I want!"
"Hurting me won't get you anywhere!"
Hehis eyes and let her go. "If that's the way you want to play it then so be it. Make me some black clothes and I'm gone. I'll go kill everyone in Heaven with my bare hands."
"You can try," she said coldly. She took her goggles off and threw them on the ground. Rushing out of the room, she rubbed her bruised arms with tears in her eyes.
He growled in anger, his hands crushing and breaking whatever pieces of tech he could find. Once he'd smashed it all to rubble, he stormed after her. "Come back here!"
She covered her ears with her hands and started running down the hall. Of course with his longer stride it didn't take long for him to wrap his arms around her waist and hold her tight, keeping her from moving.
"Let go of me or I swear! I swear I'll...I'll do something horrible!"
"Oh please. I'm a fallen angel and you're a tiny girl. Just make my sword and I'll leave you alone for all eternity." She relaxed in his arms but only because she was crying so hard she didn't have the energy to fight. When her tears hit his arm, he groaned and turned her around. "What the hell are you crying about?"
She pulled from him. "I'll make your damn weapon! And you will leave and don't ever come back! Never! Do you understand! Never!"
"Yeah. Yeah. Just don't cry when I'm gone."
She punched him in the face. It hurt, but she had wanted to do that since she had first met him. She wanted to do more. To shoot him or to throw him into a wall, but neither she could do. So instead, she moved past him, swallowing ever bit of herself left, and went to her work room. Putting on her goggles, she set to work, determined to get it over with. Reaching over she pushed a button on the wall and watched the solid door close and lock. Another door came over it, locking as well. With the peace, she could work all night and he would be gone before she woke.
Of course he sat there banging on the door. If he cared enough he could probably punch through it, but honestly, he was just going to let her be for now. She was making his sword. He would let her finish and be done with it.
She had cried every tear by the time she finished. She packed him a bag and forced him to wake while handing him everything. "Get out."
He took his new sword and swung it around a few times. "Nice," he grinned. "See? It wasn't that bad. I knew you could do it." She ignored him and got in her bed. Her hands hurt and were bandaged, but she didn't care. She just wanted him out. Out of her place and out of her life. "Hey...you okay?"
"Get out. That was the agreement. I held up my end of the bargain."
"Yeah right. Just tell me what button to press to make my clothes black and I'll leave you alone."
"They are in your bag."
"Oh... Right. Then...I guess I'll see you later...or not."
"Never come back."
"Yeah...I figured. Look, before I go and leave all dramatic like.... I just, you know, you're not all that bad, Aura. You'll make some guy happy someday."
"Go away."
"Fine. Have a nice life." She didn't say anything. Without another word, he stared for the exit and soon disappeared.
Aura's soft cries echoed in her room. Though she didn't want to be upset, though she didn't want to feel like she did...it couldn't be helped. She felt cheated and tricked. Used and useless.
"Yo you forgot food in this-" He stopped when he realized that she was curled up crying. "What the hell? What's wrong?"
"I was specific! Never come back!"
"You didn't give me any food!"
"You didn't say I had to!"
"I kind of figured that was obvious since I'm being cast out!"
"Fix me a sword, Aura! Fix my clothes, Aura! Fix this! Fix that! Give me this! Give me that!" she screamed. Standing she went to the machine and got out some food and threw it in his bag. "There is nothing left for me to get! I don't have any more parts! I don't have anything else! So get out!"
He frowned as she glared daggers into him. "Okay. I get your point. I'm an asshole."
"Now leave. Just leave already."
He hesitated before setting his stuff down. "If you want more tech, I can get it for you."
"I don't want anything from you! I just want to be in a world that isn't disturbed by you!"
"Look, see me, standing here trying to be nice? Damn, it's no wonder that I'm not nice. Nothing good ever comes out of it!"
"Glad you learned something! Now keep your end and leave!"
Picking up his bags, he turned and left without looking back. Finally, she sat back on her bed. She laid back and closed her eyes, letting the wet rivers fall down her cheeks.
He traveled for many days, resting in the darkness of old buildings, fighting of Regulators and the rare angel that came his way. He knew what he had to do, he knew where he was going, yet despite this his heart felt heavy, and late at night he pondered what had gotten him so confused.
Aura was like a ghost in her home. She walked the halls only cleaning. There were no parts to tinker with and she didn't have the energy to go out and look for some. Instead she just stayed like a zombie, organizing things and cleaning.
In four months time he had run out of supplies. All access to Heaven had been cut off, and his brother was hunting him mercilessly. He wondered around the land, thirsty and starving. He'd lost so much weight in that time, nearly half of his body weight gone. Fighting off foes left and right, he somehow wandered into a familiar area. One that he knew thought it seemed like so long ago. He weighed his options, but his hunger gave way. Stumbling upward, he crashed through the door, wondering if she was even still alive.
Aura looked down at him. Going to the bedroom, she grabbed a sheet and slipped him on it then drug him to the bathroom. Undressing him she put him in the shower and cleaned him up then got him in bed and set a tray of warm food in his lap. She then closed the door behind her and went back to doing what she was doing.
He awoke several hours later, a small yawn was immediately followed by gorging himself on all the food he could eat. After he was through, he stood, butt naked and started walking through the place trying to find her. Aura was in an empty room. She was painting the walls. That's all she did these days. It was an elaborate painting and had taken her days. But that was all she had. That was all she did.
"Yo...."
"Don't talk to me. Take what you need then leave."
"Whoa, chill.... It’s been a while since I've talked to someone who wasn't shooting me...and I brought gifts..." She set the paintbrush down and went to the bedroom. Getting him some clothes and food, she started packing his things again. He grabbed her hand while sliding on his boxers. "Hold up." Aura pulled her hand from him emotionless. Reaching into two large bags, he dumped them out onto the bed. "That's all the tech I could salvage..."
"I don't want it."
"Why not? You love this stuff."
"You don't know anything about me."
"What don't I know?"
"Everything."
"Then tell me."
"Just take the stuff and go."
"Just...chill, Aura. I don't feel like going back out there right now. The fucking world has gone to fucking hell."
She sighed. "There's a bed downstairs and you can stay as long as you need to." She walked out and headed back to her painting.
"Whoa! Hey...hold up! Damn, look, I've been shot at, stabbed, burned, blasted, blown up, and gutted. Yeah, yeah, yeah I know I'm an ass hole I admit it. Still, give me the benefit of a doubt. I'm not trying to start a fight."
"Neither am I. I've giving you a bed to sleep in. What more do you want?"
"A chance to talk."
She pushed her hair from her face. "Talk."
"Alright...well...first off, the people out there are fucking crazy. I can't even show my face without getting shot at. Secondly, I found myself missing your annoying company." She rolled her eyes. "I mean...you're one of a kind, in your own way you're kind of cute; and I really missed you. More than I thought I would. You’ve grown on me." She sat down. "So...you're not tinkering anymore?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"You ruined it for me."
"How did I ruin it for you?"
"You sure do ask a lot of questions."
That's because you said I didn't know you. Well, I'm trying to learn you."
"Why?"
"I need a reason other than the obvious?"
"What is the obvious?"
"That...I want to know more about you... Duh."
"Why?"
"Because I'm curious about you."
"Why?"
"You know you ask a lot of stupid questions. I want to get to know you. That's it. End of story."
"That's not good enough."
"Not good enough? Since when did I have to be good enough to ask questions?"
"Since you ruined my life."
"How did I ruin your life? I helped you find this place which is closer to paradise than Heaven is."
She stood and went to the bathroom, closing it behind her. He got up and followed her to it, opening up the door and slipping behind her. She looked back at him and covered herself. "Can't I at least shower in peace?"
"You just decided...mid talk...to take a shower?"
"I've been painting."
"Yeah well...let me take a shower with you."
"No!"
He grinned and stepped closer to her. "You know, your body is starting to look far more feminine." She slapped his face. He winced. "Okay. That was meant as a compliment."
"Get out."
"No. Look. I'll close my eyes, turn my back, whatever...just let me stay in here."
She covered herself and walked out. He rolled his eyes and shut the door. Fine. He didn't even mean that in a perverted way. He told her he wouldn't even look at her pre-adolescent body. He just wanted some damn human companionship. Aura dressed and crawled in bed. He hadn't been here for a full day and already she wanted him gone. He stayed in the restroom, not bothering to even leave it. He rubbed his back, the flesh had been irritating him ever since he had left. He'd woken up with a feather sticking out of it once or twice. He'd had to rip it out just to keep it from hurting even more so. Why had he come back here besides the fact that he was starving? Right. Human companionship. She barely counted as human.
Aura woke hours later. She went to the bathroom and opened the door then looked at him. "Can I shower now?"
He opened his eyes and groaned. "Can I ask a favor first?"
"Hmmm?"
He stood and slowly moved his shirt. He winced as he turned his back to her, revealing the bulging flesh where wings were trying to break through it. "I need you to cut the wings out...."
She ran her hands over his back. "Why?"
"Because it burns like hell," he whispered, wincing when she touched the bulging flesh which was red and breaking from the mass beneath it. "And wings would be a dead give away to who I am. I have a hard enough time dodging gunfire as it is."
She sighed and grabbed a knife then a mouth guard. Putting the mouth guard in his mouth, she set to work.
