Gia walked out and went back to the bedroom. Going to their closet, she pulled out something to wear and started to get dressed. "What would you like for breakfast?"
"Something simple. It really doesn't matter so long as it is food." He had learned months ago that he would have to work his way around her cravings.
She nodded and walked out. She sighed when she saw the stairs. She hated stairs. Grabbing the banister, she started down and by the time she was at the bottom, she was holding her back with a groan. Shaking it off, she continued to the kitchen and started on a simple breakfast.
Leo was already out of the shower and dressed by the time she started breakfast. Kissing her on the cheek, he checked the time and sighed. "I'd better hurry into the office. We're suppose to have that important meeting with the congressman today."
She pushed him a plate. "Eat first."
"Yes dear." He smiled and took a few pieces of bacon, nibbling on them while rubbing her belly adoringly.
She leaned back against the counter and ate her breakfast quietly. She looked down at her belly when one of them would move or kick. It was a constant battle in there. One always wanted more room.
"I'll see you guys later," he said with a smile, kissing her cheek as he grabbed his coat.
Now that he was gone...the house was silent. She was on her winter break and wouldn't be back at school until spring again. Going to the living room, she picked up one of the boxes and started hanging the Christmas ornaments on the tree.
The day before Christmas, Leo took off so that they could be together. He was going to have to work on Christmas morning and he wanted to spend her first Christmas at home. He sat her down, rubbing her stomach and kissing the nape of her neck. "Merry Christmas."
She smiled. "Merry Christmas!"
Pulling out a small box, he set it on her belly. "Open your gift."
She smiled and pulled out a gift for him and handed it to him. "I sold some of my own things to get that, so I hope you like it," she said and opened her little box.
Inside the box was a silver picture frame with their names engraved in it and their picture was placed in it. It was the only time that they had ever had their picture taken together. She smiled. "Oh, I love it, Leo!" she said and kissed his cheek. "Now you open yours!"
He quickly unwrapped his own present to see what was inside. She smiled when he pulled out his wedding band. "I'm sorry it took so long to get you one. I just had to wait and get up the money. On the inside it has my name!"
"Wow," he whispered. "You didn't have to, Gia." He smiled and gave her the ring, holding out his hand so that she could put it on him.
She nodded. "Yes I did. You're my husband," she said as she slipped it on. "Perfect fit. I'm so glad."
"As am I." He leaned in and kissed her once more, massaging her lips with love and tenderness.
She moved her hands to his shoulders and smiled into the deep kiss.
Gia sat up in bed. "Ouch..." she whispered. Pulling the blankets back, her eyes widened at the stain. It was time. The nine months were up. "Leo! Please get up!"
Leo groaned as he moved. "What? What is it?"
"It's time. Please get my bag."
"Really? Yes... of course!" He got out of bed and quickly grabbed her bags. There was a small pause in his movements where time stood still. Shaking his head, he smiled as he turned to the bed. Helping her up, they called for the limo and were soon on their way to the hospital.
"Ouch!" she cried while they moved her to the room and changed her. "When can I push!" she pouted.
"Not for a bit, Mrs. Masters. Just hold out a bit longer."
"But it hurts!"
"You're doing fine, Gia," Leo whispered. Kissing her forehead, he closed his eyes and stepped back. "I will be right back. I promise."
"What?!? You can't leave me!" she cried. "Ouch!"
"I'll be back. There is something that I have to do." He looked at her once more, a smile on his lips as he turned and left the room.
Gia cried louder. "Make it stop!"
"Just a little longer, Mrs. Masters!"
"Say that again and I will kick you in the face!"
"And the changes to the will are done?"
"Yes, Mr. Masters. Gia Masters and your children will be well taken care of," his attorney said with a smile. Leo nodded and stood, falling slightly only to grip his deck. "Leo, are you alright?"
"Yes... Just a little under the weather," he smiled. Fixing his glasses, he stood and wiped his lips. “I will be going now.” Walking outside, he froze as another wave of pain hit him. Holding onto the street sign for support, he watched as the world began to turn blurry. He smiled through the pain while blood dripped from his lips.
An old clock, forgotten about the past few months was blinking. It had reached zero, and now that its task was complete, it shut down to rest.
Leo doubled over, coughing up blood as he fell down on the side of the street. Rest. Rest sounded so good to him. As he closed his eyes, he could see Gia's tired yet happy face as the doctor let her see her three children. His three children.
For every star that is lost, a new one is born in the sky. His life, for his three children. He would gladly accept that. The darkness consumed him, and with him the images of his love and children. As he laid there on the wet street corner and people screamed for help, he still smiled.
