Journey

The train station was crowded.

It was a sea of colors, coats, and hats as far as the eye could see.

Regardless of the amount of people, the dampness clinging to the air cut through the dry noises of conversation.

The fog from one another's breath mingled into what could only be described as a hazy mist saturating the entire platform.

The train's whistle sounded, almost creating a clear path in the air.

An occasional tickle of a breeze would visit a random passerby with its enthusiastic touches.

The train finally came to rest at the tiny platform with a rusted sign and nine painted on with white.

Passengers could be seen gathering their belongings and children whose only desire was to discover the best hiding places on board.

The lack of movement nudged a small infant out of its peaceful slumber only to provoke it to cry as a response.

Elderly passengers moved calmly and with a steady pace, knowing there was no real hurry to join what awaited outside.

Melissa Olson gently placed her hand on her hat and ducked as she exited the train compartment.

The wind she'd seen through the window hadn't died down; a gentle push could send the hat into the endless stream of people.

Her long skirt was playfully dancing along the edge of the platform.

She lifted her head to take in her surroundings with her ice blue eyes.

The wind tugged at loose strands the color of honey from her neat bun and around her face to caress her skin and land on her shoulder temporarily.

There was no need to search for luggage, everything she had was located in the small carrying bag on her elbow.

This is where it begins. Where I discover what I am to become. There's no need to look to the past. Not anymore, Melissa girl.

She took a deep breath and stepped forward to be taken in by the raging bustle of material and flesh.
