Chapter 4

I slowly opened my eyes, my vision blurry. As my vision came into focus, I saw that I was in a huge bedroom.
Ruby red with golden embroidering covered the walls. The bed was covered in blue satin.
I groaned and rubbed my eyes, and took another look.
“You’re awake.” I looked towards the door and saw the girl from before. “I’ll get my master.” Before I could say anything she was gone.
I waited a few moments before I heard a familiar voice. “Catalina.” I winced a bit at the slight coldness.
“Kain…” My voice was soft and awkward.
“What are you doing here?” I turned and faced him. He was dressed in royal clothing, and was primped and proper.
“Th-the council told me to find you.” I looked down, not being able to meet his eyes.
“Is she finally here?” Another familiar voice. A girl with long white hair and lime green eyes came into view.
“Seth?” My eyes widened at her appearance.
“Hey, I was going to lead you here if you would have stayed with me.” She smiled at me.
“How did you get here before me?”
“I have my ways of getting home.”
“Home?” I finally looked at Seth’s clothing. Royal gowns, and her hair was all done up. “And who brought me here?”
“That was my chevalier, Candice.” Kain moved closer to me.
“So you’ve been here this whole time?” I finally looked up at him with curious eyes.
“Yes, there’s much to say, but first let’s get you cleaned up. Follow me.” I slowly followed the guy I’ve been looking for.
“Kain…” He quickly silenced me as we walked by a red oak door.
“My parents’ room.” He whispered, dragging me through the corridor.
“Kain, why didn’t you tell me?” I pulled my arm out of his grip.
“Cat, I couldn’t tell you!”
“Why not?”
“My family told me not to! There’s a lot that you don’t know about me.”
“Oh, you mean like how you’re royalty?”“Be quiet, otherwise…” His eyes soon widened in fear.
“Kain.” A harsh woman’s voice rang through the hallway.
“Who’s that?” My curiosity soon was answered.
A woman with long black hair, bright red-violet eyes, walked out of the red oak door we passed earlier. She was short, yet very thin, she looked quite young.
“Mother…I’m sorry, I promise we won’t disturb you again.”
“Kain, who is this?” I made eye contact with his mother’s red-violet eyes.
“This is Catalina, a friend of mine. I’m just going to take her to get cleaned up. I’m sorry for disturbing you.”
“I would love to talk to you later Catalina.” She narrowed her eyes at me, then turned back around and reentered her room.
“Your mother?” I whispered, letting out the breath I had been holding.
“Yes, but she’s not the greatest.” He rushed me back down the hallway to the bathroom. “Here, I’ll have Seth bring you clothes.” He soon left closing the door behind him.
I slowly stripped out of my dirty clothes, and reluctantly stepped into the shower to get cleaned.
After my shower, I crept out of the bathroom in the nice clothes that Seth brought from her closet, and quietly walked down the pervious hallway.
“Catalina?” A woman’s voice came from behind me. I jumped, started at the sound of my name.
The girl behind me had shoulder length honey brown hair, blue eye. She was slim, tall and wearing the usual royal gown.
I’m sorry to startle you. Kain has asked me to escort you to the commons. My name is Amber.” She gave a warm, inviting smile. I returned it, not being able to help myself.
“So, Amber, are you another chevalier?” I looked over at the tall girl beside me as she led me through many hallways.
“Yes, I’m another one of Kain’s many chevaliers.”
“Many?” I felt my jaw drop to the ground. How many could he have?
“Yes, he has many more, but for right now there’s only three of us. Candice, who you already met in the woods, me, and then there’s Kendra. Ah, we’re here. Kain will be with you in a minute.”
“Thank…” She was gone. “…you” I gently say down on one of the plush chairs.
“Cat.” I turned to look at Kain.
“So, are you ready to finally explain yourself?” I looked at him with a hard expression.
He slowly sat beside me. “Okay, first, I apologize for worrying you.. But I was going to come back safe and sound like I promised.”
“When were you deciding on coming back?”
“After the crowning ceremony, but that can only happen after I find my betrothed.” My eyes widened. Kain was going to be king of the vampires.
“Kain!” A mid-back length blonde haired girl walked through the door covered in blood. Her eyes were glowing a bright yellow, and she was baring her teeth.
“Kendra, are you okay?” He swiftly walked over to her.
“I had a struggle, he wouldn’t give up.” The glow in her eyes died, and she looved over at me. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t now you had company!”
“No, no, it’s okay, Cat is just a friend of mine. Now, go see Amber about those cuts and gashes.” She rushed out of the room, trying to make sure the blood wouldn’t drip on the floor.
“Your third chevalier?” I asked still looking towards the doorway.
“Yes, she is. She’s my hunter.” Kain sat back down beside me. He slowly turned to face me.
“So, you’re looking for your betrothed?” I looked down at my hands, remembering his and my kiss that happened so many months ago.
“Yeah, it’s been short notice.”
“Yeah, I would say.” I rubbed the back of my neck.
“Kain,” Kain’s mother’s soft voice filled the room. “can I speak with you?” She slightly glared at me. I slowly stood up, taking the hint, and walked out of the room.
As I walked down the hallway, I passed a room where Candice, Kendra, and Amber were.
“So, he found her?” Candice’s voice was filled with excitement.
“That’s what Kain said. I hope she’s not like some of his past wives in his past lives.” Amber explained, wiping blood off some of Kendra’s wounds.
“Oh, you mean like Thorn? Man, I hated her!”
“Yeah, she made me want to go on a rampage.” A chorus of laughter went through the room.
“But I hear that Kain’s mother has a feeling about another girl, and his dad agreed.” Kendra piped in.
“Yeah, well, I doubt Kain is going to let Mary tell him which girl to go for.” Candice made a face at the name of Kain’s mother.
“Well, she has never been wrong.”
“Well, that’s something Kain ahs to figure out on his own.” The room went silent, and all I could hear was Amber rummaging through her aid kit.
I slowly walked away, thinking. So, he already found a girl… My heart sunk when I heard that news, and if he didn’t find his betrothed in that girl, his mother, Mary, was never wrong.
“Catalina! Catalina, don’t ignore me.” Seth jumped on me. “Why do you look so glum?” She pinched my cheek and giggled.
“It’s nothing…” I sighed softly looking down. I soon felt pressure in my head. “Seth! Get out of my head!” I turned and glared at her.
“Jeez! What went up your ass and bit you?” She stormed away in a fit of anger. I sighed once more feeling guilty about yelling at her. After all, she was just tying to help. I leaned against the wall, closing my eyes.
“And who are you?” My eyes snapped open and landed on a tall, dark haired guy with strong, handsome facial features, and black and red eyes.
“I’m Catalina, a friend of Kain’s, and you are?” I could slightly hear my voice quiver.
“Ah, so you’re the partner he always talks about.” He talks about me? That was something new. “I’m Abel, his older brother.” He has an older brother? The longer I stayed in this house, the more I learned.
“Abel! Stay away from her, she’s not a piece of meat for you.” Seth walked in front of me and glared at her older brother.
“Seth! Why would you think such things of me?” Abel looked highly offended by his sister’s comment.
“Don’t act all innocent! You know damn well what I’m talking about.” Seth snarled through her teeth as a warning.
“I’m sorry for my sister, Catalina. She can be quite rude.” Abel smirked at his younger sister then shoved pasted us.
“Man whore?” I asked in a flat tone.
“The biggest.” She sighed. A giggle filtered through my lips. I looked at Seth with my hands covering my mouth. This little fit began her laughter.
Our laughter was soon interrupted by a door slamming. “Uh, oh, that was my mother’s door.” I took the slamming as a bad sign. “We need to go.” Seth dragged me through the hallway.
I could feel a dark aura in the air. It kept creeping closer and closer. I glanced at Seth’s face, her expression frightened.
We stopped abruptly, and I heard a scream come out of Seth’s mouth. “Mother, no, please!” I heard her beg. Seth’s grip on my arm loosened, and her hand soon dropped.
I looked back towards Seth. I watched as she was being dragged down the hallway. Just when I was going to say something, I saw a glimpse of her mother’s face.
Her eyes glowed a bright red, a snarl across her youthful features. She looked as if she was to kill.
“Mother, please! It’s not my fault that he won’t listen! Mother!” I watched Seth get dragged into one of the many rooms in the hallway.
My eyes were wide, and I was paralyzed in my spot. Fear shot through me. I could only imagine what awful things her mother was going to do to her. I was only there for a few hours and the mother already scared me.
“Catalina, come with me,” The voice of Kendra, which I recognized instantly, was urgent. “you don’t need to hear what happens.” There were tears gathering in her eyes.
