It was Friday. I was at shcool sitting in fourth period. Leo

hadn't spoken to me all day and that worried me. I had tried to

confront him at lunch about it. I had walked up and sat beside

him. He was sitting in a new spot, away from me and the guys.

He sat by Allison. Eddy, Karl, and Jack had warned me not to

worry about it. They said he'd probably just hooked a new girl

friend. I had a feeling that it wasn't that. Well, I was only half

wrong.

"Leo, hey!" I said sitting beside him.

He grunted something and tried to turn away from me.

"Hey!" I snapped and slapped his shoulder. He turned around,

bristling.

"Look. I've got a girl friend now. I can't hang around you

and the guys. Got it?" Leo spat.

"Does this have something to do with him?" I wanted to

know. Suddenly, Allison turned around and payed very close

attention to what we were saying.

Leo gave me a warning look. "He didn't say anything to you,

did he? Cuz if he did-"

"He didn't." Leo growled. "It's fine, okay?"

I sighed. "Not okay. He said something to you! Dammit, I'm

going to kill him when I get back! Did you...erm...talk to your

Dad?" I switched subjects far too quickly. I saw Allison scowl from

the other side of the table. Leo just rolled his eyes. He knew how

much I hated her. "No. And I'm not going to. He'll tell me when

he's ready."

"What? Are you nuts?"

"NO!" He half yelled, catching the attention of some people in

the cafeteria. He took a deep breath and whispered. "It is fine. Just

go on back to him and forget it ever happened. Thankyou." He

added. "But just leave it alone now."

I gave him the death glare and he jumped. I grinned and I

wondered how insane I looked right now. "He would've only

flinched." I stood with my lunch tray. "Oh. And don't forget.

Never go back there. He doesn't listen to me all the time, ya know.

And his pets haven't been fed in a while." I threatened. I walked

to the garbage can and tossed my food, no longer hungry.

. . . .

"Wow." Allison said, looking after Lenne. "She's pissed.

What was that all about?"

"I think I insulted her friend." Leo hesitated. "And he's worse

than she is when he's pissed."

"Who is he?" Allison asked, blue eyes gleaming. "What

happened with you two."

Leo smiled. "I met her boyfriend. We didn't get along."

Calling Freddy her boyfriend was sort of berating, but it fit

somehow. Allison grimaced. "Jealous?"

"Him. Not me. He thought we had a thing going on."

"Did you."

"Nope. She's a bitch." Leo felt chills crawl up his spine. He

realized that he'd made a mistake by saying that. If Freddy knew

what had happened to his Mom, then he could easily know what

happened to anybody. To everybody. Couldn't he?

. . . .

I wanted to scream in fourth period. I sat beside Allison and

Leo who decided that History should be a make out session. After

the late bell rang, I did the one thing that I knew would throw Leo

into fits. I hummed. I started humming Freddy's tune. Everyone

babbled through this class. The teacher was boring and didn't

really seem to mind anyway.

The humming more than caught Leo's attention. He jumped

three inches out of his desk with Allison in his lap. I giggled when

she glared at me and I kept humming the song, over and over.

Eventually, Leo was giving me such screwed up looks that I just

laughed and layed my head on my desk. I realized that I was

tired. So I let myself drift off, thinking about what excellent timing

I had. Leo poked my side and woke me up from a half daze. I

glared at him. "I'm sleepy!" I snapped.

"Don't!" he hissed. "Please?" Allison scowled at him. She

was definitely confused.

I grinned. "Why. I'll be fine." I closed my eyes and fell

asleep immediately. Freddy was sleeping on the couch. I looked at

him and shook my head. I poked his shoulder. "Freddy?" He

opened one eye. "What?" he rolled over.

"Wake up!" I demanded. He sat up and sighed. "You're

early." He remarked.

"What did you tell Leo? He's avoiding me now." I pouted

"And he's got a whore for a girlfriend-a whore he used to make fun

of. Tell me!"

"So you did like him?" Freddy teased.

"NO! I don't like being ignored!" Freddy snickered. "I'm not

telling you." He sung gleefully.

"Errrrr! FREDDY! Tell me right now!"

"N. O." He sighed. "But if you really want to freak out your

little friend, I can help you."

"You mean...Allison?" I concluded quickly. Oh the thought

had me gleaming inside and out.

"Yes." Freddy grinned wickedly.

"How?" I said desperately.

"Remember my song...."

. . . .

Leo watched Lenne wearily. He had a bad feeling about all

this. He'd noticed that she kept squirming in her sleep. Allison

kept questioning him. "Why do you keep watching her?" She

demanded. "Leo?"

"It's just...well." He really looked at Allison for the first time.

"It's..." He whispered in her ear. "Freddy." Her eyes grew wide

and her skin paled.

"W-what do you mean?" She asked shocked.

Leo hesitated again. "They are..uh....pretty well acquainted."

"How do you kno-" Allison was cut off by Lenne who was

singing in her sleep. Leo jumped up and several people turned to

identify the singer. Lenne was whispering and everyone heard.

"One, Two, Freddy's coming for you...

Three, Four, better lock your door....

Five, Six, grab your cruxafix....

Seven, Eight, better stay up late...

Nine, Ten, never sleep again.."

Allison screamed. The teacher balked and everyone jumped

up and got as far away from Lenne as possible. Some people ran

screaming out of the door, including the teacher. Two people

stayed: Leo and Allison. Leo ran to the teacher's desk and

snatched a half empty water bottle. He dumped its remaining

contents over my head. I lurched out of my nap, already there was

an unhappy scowl on my face. I turned my misfortunate eyes upon

Leo. And then I set my sights on Allison, who beheld the world's

most knowledgable expression. I nearly slapped the smug look

right off her face.

"Dammit, Leo! You told her?" I accused accurately.

He snatched his loving girlfriend into a protective embrace.

"Yes, I told Allison. We're together now, remember? Just like you

and the freak." Allison grinned triumphantly, hoping surely to see

jealousy and loss on my face. Instead she got an eyeful of hysterics.

I had lost it. "LEO! Me'n Freddy aren't together like that!

We're buddies! But you had to go and tell that bitch yankee girl

everything!" I made a sound like an angry dog and stormed to the

classroom door. Before departing, I turned to give Leo a lethal

eruption of rage. "Next time I won't even try to stop him from

killing you! And Allison...well, I never would've tried in the first

place. The song was meant for y'all by the way. Freddy sends you

his best, which inevitably means, his worst." I left boiling with

temper and a little voice repeating in my ear..."Just like you and the

freak"....That was so not the case between me and Freddy? We

were just really good and odd pals....

So, maybe not just pals. I knew that, given the chance,

Freddy would probably rip my throat out and eat my heart....or

something else along those rather gruesome lines. I looked out the

window and was immediately distracted. Some kid was playing

with a sparkly silver yoyo. At first I thought, it's so pwetty, but

then my mind wandered a bit more and I wondered if Freddy

would be any good with a yoyo. Auomatically, I decided that he

wouldn't. He'd probably impale himself with it somehow. That

made me snicker-and then frown.

Why had my thoughts revolved only around him since I'd

met him, I pondered. I didn't precisely get along with Freddy. If

anything thing at all, our relationship was based strictly on our

argumental status, which right now was pretty high. But what had

I gained since I decided to befriend Freddy? I'd lost my first real

friend. I'd made a definite enemy. I'd made three more friends

through Leo, but he could easily turn them against me. Of that I

was pretty sure. Well, perhaps not Jack. There was something

about him that said he wouldn't betray me. I wasn't sure why.

I thought more about this for a while and came to a very

exasperating decision. It hurt just to think about, but I was already

having trouble fitting in here. I needed not to be like the lady

down the street from my home-Ferny, of whom everyone feared

was a mental nutcase. I needed to live beyond my sleep. And so I

knew what had to be done.

I was at my house. It was drawing near ten o'clock. I was

already sleepy, if not a bit sad. Three things sat on my beside

table, under the shade of a tacky lamp. One was a glass filled with

about an inch of water. Another was the newest paddle ball that

Freddy had given me. The last-and the most important things-

were two very tiny pills. I picked them up, tossed them in my

mouth and drowned them with water.

I bit back a sob as I replaced the glass on the table and

grabbed the paddle ball. I walked across my room, opened my

closet door and shoved it in to the deepest corner that I could find-

and hopefully forget. I walked back to my bed and got in. I saw

my hand reach up to turn off the light and heard the switch as it

clikced. Half dazed and woozy, I closed my eyes. There was a

brief flash of him-Freddy, he was frowning and looking at me with

his eyes full of longing, disappointment, and of course, anger.

"Sorry." I whispered, before the vision disappeared.

Then I fell into the darkness that should've been my dreams,

but wasn't. Next I opened them, and it was light....

One Week Later....

Freddy wander his Realm of the Boiler Room and sulked. As

for all the years he'd spent here, it may as well have been his

childhood home. He knew every nook and corner, but it suddenly

seemed to lack all of one thing. Or one person. Of course, Freddy

was furious to the decision that Lenne had made. She'd taken the

hypnocil and ignored him. And for the sake of what but gaining

back a friend of hers-a friend that Freddy thoroughly despised.

Loathed. Hated. Detested beyond all others. Leo Carter had taken

away Freddy's only entertainment, his only excitement, and his

only-and he resented admitting it-friend.

Freddy had not known what annoyance and aggravation this

"friend" would cost him. But it was too late to reverse the tides. So

he'd sit and imagine all the horrible, and he really did know of

some horrifics, things that he could do to this "Leo". And Lenne,

the stupid girl didn't think he could handle a yo-yo, preposterous!

Lenne. He needed to get her back into dreaming. What had

happened to his fearless, determined, and overlyhappy

companion?

What could the Evil Demon and Devil of Dreams do?

Well. It was obvious, he could think of something. Jason?

No. He'd tried that route before. It had ended...badly for the both

of them. Honestly, Freddy contained a certain amount of respect

for Jason-Freddy's equal in many ways. No one else was dreaming

anymore. So if Lenne was to come back, he growled, she'd have to

do it on her own. And until then.....

Haunting was something that took far too much time and

patience. Freddy was not precisely thrilled at hunting people

outside of his dream world. But he didn't have to "haunt"

necessarily. He could leave little signs among Lenne's friends. Or

perhaps her enemies? Freddy didn't know. This was all too

confuddling to consider at a time so dull.

Sighing in frustration, Freddy fell onto the big red couch. He

sneered at it. And then he sneered some more just for fun. And

then he sneered at the boiler room in particular and had an

appalling thought. He snapped his fingers. And the room was

green. The couch was now white. Freddy smiled sheepishly.

What the bloody hell? He thought. The place really did need a

redecorating.

"Damn girl. Why do you always have to be right?" He

snorted and turned to stretch out on the couch. "You're lucky I like

your company. One day I'll find a way to kill you." It was then

Freddy realized that he was talking to nothing but air and he said

shortly, "I really gotta kill you. This is getting ridiculous." And it

was. Freddy was growing fond of her. Fond of a ruddy living

human who had chosen to ignore him.

Bored, he sat up and a red yo-yo popped into existence. He

stared at it uncertainly for a second and then stood to try it out. He

made it roll properly up and down the string and he grinned. He

spun it into a circle vertical to his body. Laughing evily, he lost his

concentration and it flew into his eye. He yowled and slung the toy

across the room.

Really losing his sanity now, he bowed to the fallen thing.

"For blinding me, Freddy the Great! I shall appoint

you....Richard...my sidekick in assasinating the weak pathetic

children who don't take their medicine! Together, we shall take

over the wo-.......Buggars! I'm losing my effing mind." He pointed

his index finger at the yoyo, in which case a sharp dagger was

pointing to a harmless toy. The yoyo burst into flame.

He snickered. "And that is what I'd like to call the

spontaneous combustion of a dangerous child's toy!" He looked

carefully at the remains of the yoyo, wishing dearly that it had

been Leo Carter. Freddy mentally cursed himself. "Ely! Evy!"

Freddy called. His pets came slithering from above.

"Hello my pets!" He smirked at the red spiked dog collars

wrapped around his two humongous snakes' necks. "I wish you to

do me a favor." Freddy had gotten these pets from a particularly

interesting character. Everyone had heard of the Grim Reaper, of

course. Freddy snorted at the thought. Mr. Grim had been a

disappointment. He was just an old fart who was rather fond of

gambling and dressing up like every day was Halloween. But

he'd given Freddy Ely and Evy for killing a few years ago.

Freddy loved his snakes. They were the scariest things to use

against people. And they were poor company, he snuffed irritated.

The only good thing was that they good sometimes wander in the

real world. "You remember Lenne?" He spat at them.

They hissed in recognition.

"Excellent. Go to the real world and seek her out. Make sure

she knows that I want to see her!" He yelled and they snatched

back their heads, tongues slicking out of their mouths aggresively.

"Scare people. Don't bite any that don't cause trouble. And if a Leo

or an Allison gets in your way, then fill your bellies with the girl

and bring me the brat. GO!"

His pets slithered away into the abyss of lines and pipes.

Freddy sat down and chuckled at his own expertise. He was

clever, indeed. A clever fool with a clever mind. And a clever

habit of going all too far for nothing. Lenne was going to

decapetate him for this. And he couldn't wait until she showed. If

she did.....

* * * *

I was, as Freddy would put it "in a fowl". I had not visited

him for a week and was as irritated as can be. Leo was finally

starting to accept me again, though my continuous dark mood and

untimely tantrums were beginning to scare him. He wasn't the

only one it was scaring. Eddy and Karl were as close as brothers.

They veered away from me like cats cornered by a pack of

ravenous wolves. Jack surprised me with yet more news that I

hadn't expected. His very last name stunned me into silence.

It was Kruger.

The day he'd confronted me was the Monday after the Friday

when I scared the wits out of my classmates and history teacher. If

there was anything close to another person whom would not fear

Freddy, it was his own kin. "Freddy had a brother." He'd

explained to me. "His name was Blake. He's my Dad."

I had stared wide eyed and amazed. "Freddy's your Uncle?"

And so Jack had clung thoroughly to me after that. I'd then noticed

similarities. The nose, the laugh, and also the offset posture.

Though Jack was very different from his Uncle. He had hair, black

as night, that he'd mess with and put into the wildest styles. That

day it had been spiked. The Tuesday after, he'd straightened it, so

it hung at full lenght over his golden eyes and pale skin.

Despite the oddities of the resemblance, I was entranced by

the mere thought of being close to one of Freddy's kin. But that still

didn't improve my mood much. Once another Friday had reached,

my personality had dropped to an all time low. Leo had greeted

me that day in an excellent mood, making me literally growl with

annoyance. He winced and chose to take a chance. "I'm sorry,

Lenne." He sighed and bowed his head. "You were only trying to

help me and I just made you hate me for insulting your friend."

I frowned, thinking that this wasn't entirely his fault. "It's

okay. Let's be friends again, kay?" I grinned. "Freddyless

friends?"

He looked horribly stunned for a moment and then he smiled

widely. "Great. You and him...erm...have some trouble?"

I glared at him. He jumped back this time. With a dark look

and a heated tone, I told him. "Let's not talk about him, got it?"

"Noooo problem." He said hesitantly.

I sighed and gave in. "We didn't fight, if that's what you

want to know. I just made a decision is all. One friend for

another." I was finally beginning to get a grip on my raging

temper. And then I saw Allison. She ran up to Leo and planted a

gooey kiss on his cheek. And anger returned. I loathed that girl

and secretly, I wished that if Freddy ever got hold of anyone of my

classmate's lives, that he'd choose Allison.

Something in me squirmed as Leo slid an arm around her

waist and gave her a heart melting grin. Anyone would recognize

such a reaction. Leo had fallen for Allison. I thought of Freddy

and sighed. The hard truth was that I missed him. But why I

should remember it now, I wasn't sure. Leo raised a quizzical

brow at my sigh and distant look. I had to think that he'd guessed

wrongly about my reaction. He looked guiltily at me and then at

her.

And then Jack raced in. Me'n Jack had become quite friendly,

developing a sister-brother love towards each other. "Hello,

nephewling of dreams!" I greeted cheerfully. He was the only

person that I could greet cheerfully anymore, even openly, with his

secret. No one had really caught on to the whole nephew thing.

His family had changed their last names to Kuger for safety, but

their last names were not forgotten. "Hello, ladyling of my uncle's

eye?"

I snickered at that. "What new otrocious names have you

come up with, Jack? Surely none of them could be so corny as that.

And so telling." I informed him flawlessly, glancing at Leo

glancing at us, confused and pondering our words.

Screaming down the hall caught all of our attentions. A

group of horrified freshman girls wailed as they soared by. They

were screaming something about snakes. I got a funny feeling in

my stomach at what snakes they were talking about. Leo kissed

Allison's forehead and pulled away from her with an apologetic

smile. And then he faced me, looking stern. He asked. "Do you

know what snakes they might be running from?"

I wanted to scream at him-yell at him that I was through with

Freddy and his lingering troubles. But I didn't. Because I knew

that that couldn't be true. Instead, I lowered my eyes and stared

annoyed at the floor. "I know what you're thinking. And I don't

really know if they're here, but if they are, then they're my concern.

I'll deal with them." I stared back into his eyes meaningfully.

"Don't get in the way." I glanced towards the others, sighed, and

finished what I was meaning to say. "If I know F-Freddy, then he'd

tell them to pick on the kids, but he'd name off a select few that

they could kill, if something were to go wrong."

I turned back to the direction the girls came screaming from

and saw nothing. "Lunch sounds nice. Let's go."

"But if-"

"LET'S GO!" I snapped. "They'll know where to find me." I

began slowly walking down the hall, mind fizzling with

annoyance already. Feeling a little sick, I picked at Freddy's song

in my head.

One, two, Freddy's coming for me.

Three, four, I'm gonna beat'm till he bleeds.

Five, six, I'm gonna kill him with a stick.

Seven, eight, I've never been so ticked.

Nine, ten, I'll get to see him again!

I smiled wickedly as I played that little tune over in my head.

Something was wonderfully reasurring about it. "Bring it on,

Freddy!" I yelled at the ceiling. My friends and Allison behind me

all jumped at the challenge. I laughed maniacally and started

skipping off to the cafeteria.

"She's lost it." Allison remarked, scornfully.

"Yep, but she's happier now." Jack put in.

"Have you met him then? Have you seen how she treats

him?" Leo asked.

"Nah." Jack replied. "Though I imagine it would be

interesting."

Leo cleared his throat. "She's scarier than he is. Even he

thinks so, I think." Jack shrugged. "Oh well. She gets along with

him. I say he can't be all that bad."

Allison looked at him like he was Freddy himself. "What the

fuck are you saying? I can't believe even she gets along with that

nut! It's insane, Jack!"

He grinned ever so slightly and started walking after Lenne,

the devil's lady, he thought sarcastically. The others followed

without knowing the danger they could've been getting themselves

into.
