I sighed impatiently.
I sat with my usual crowd plus Leo and Allison in the
cafeteria. They were exclaiming over some new movie. Allison
chided in with a snide comment about it every now in then, but for
some odd reason, the guys all seemed to find her pretty hilarious. I
sneered off in another direction. Today's events were really
beginning to irk me. I wondered if those girls had been joking
when they'd rushed through the streets screaming about giant
reptiles.
It was nearing the end of the lunch period and the situation
was seeming to become hopeless. I sighed again for the ten
billionth time and sat my head on the table. The guys all eyed me
suspiciously. "You okay, woman who is male?" Eddy probed.
"Yeah. You've been acting wierd today." Karl backed him
up.
Leo said, "She's been all outta sorts since last week after....the
singing."
"Whazzup, Wenne?" Jack asked through a mouthful of pasta.
I wanted to glare them all to ashes and bang my head on the table.
My mood was declining into a violent stage. I had to respond, less
I wanted them to grow too annoying. "I'm aggravated."
All of their eyes flicked over to look at Allison and then came
quickly back to me. Not one of them looked pleased. "Why?" Leo
asked with meaning to his tone.
"Nothing." I replied. "Cept that you're all questioning me." I
sat up and pulled the paddle ball out of my bag. I started bouncing
it and was somewhat stunned to see that I had improved. Allison
glared at the toy, probably remembering being hit with a pink
rubber ball in the back of the head. I made it as far as twelve the
first time and continued with it as an excuse to ignore the others.
And then I heard the sound that made me grin madly.
Screaming. Everyone ran towards the kitchens. I lurched
madly to my feet and turned as the others stood up too. They saw
the problem when I did. And there they were. The snakes were
nearing thirty feet long and were nearly two feet thick. They were
wearing spiked dog collars and hissing at passing humans. I knew
they had come for me. Allison screamed and her and the guys
started back with the crowd. Only Jack stayed behind. "Lenne!
Come on!" He urged. "NOW!"
I turned to him with a wicked smirk. "I'm not going
anywhere." I told him. The snakes got to me and stopped inches
before my feet. The only escape route was beyond them, so most of
the school stood behind me, frozen in terror. And I terrified them
even more.
"You've finally come for me then?" I asked them. They
hissed and twined around eachother. "Good. What have you got
for me?"
The snakes departed slightly and I saw a piece of folded wipe
paper laying on the floor. I took one step towards the predators
and people behind me screamed-shouted out warnings-or
demanded I come back. I walked until I reached the paper and I
picked it up. It was folded into three and as I unfolded it, I rolled
my eyes.
Freddy had written its contents in blood.
Hello Lenne. You haven't forgotten me now have you?
Be nice to Ely and Evy, I'm very fond of my two nasty pets. Pat
them on the heads for me, will you. OH. And just to warn you,
they won't take kindly to either Leo or Allison. Come visit me
again. I am veryunhappy with you right now. And I can too
use a yoyo! I changed the boiler room. You were right. It
looks better in green, but I changed it back to red just to spite
you.
With much Ill-wishing from myself
Make Haste on your journey Home.
Freddy Kruger
I smiled at the paper. How very predictable of him. He'd
missed me. Yet I wondered when he'd learned so many big words.
I refolded the paper and shoved it in my pocket. Then I reached
out and patted the snakes on the head several times. "Ely
and Evy, thankyou. You can go home now-but be nice to the
people." They hissed their goodbyes and slithered out into the
unknown.
I sighed, turning around to my friends. And then my sudden
happiness dispersed. I then remembered the reason why I had left
Freddy. I saw everyone looking at me like I was the Devil himself.
I figured it was time to choose sides. I could keep at it and ignore
Freddy entirely. Or I could go and visit him to prevent him from
sending anymore visitors to bring me back to him. I had to make a
choice. And I couldn't bring myself to choose a side.
Jack was the calmest of all the students shoved into the
kitchen and against the back wall. Leo and Allison were both
glaring in my direction. Eddy and Karl were grinning proudly.
Three of of them came my way. Eddy, Karl, and Jack were still on
my side. "Hell yeah, Lenne!" Eddy surmised. "You're buddies
with the worse murder in history! Way to go, girl!"
Karl whooped his agreement and Jack just smiled. He said.
"It seems that my Uncle really is quite fond of you, Lenne. I'd love
to meet him if he'd permit."
I grinned at the three of them. "Uncle?" Eddy and Karl asked
in unision.
Jack nodded. "Technically he is. My last name changed after
everything he did. But technically I'm still a Kruger. Freddy was
my Dad's brother." Frightened, some people gasped at this. Karl
and Eddy attacked him in search of consecutive high-fives. Many
people began rushing away and out of the cafeteria. I rolled my
eyes at them and came to an ultimate decision. Tonight I would
return to see Freddy.
"Could I meet him, Lenne?" Jack asked curiously.
"I could ask him. I don't know if he'd like that very much.
But I'll give it a sho-"
"LENNE HENNINGS!" The principal stormed over to my
side. She was an overweight woman with a gleam in her eyes that
meant business. She glared. "What is going on here? LEAVE!"
She snapped to the others. The lunch room cleared immediately.
I lowered my eyes. "There were snakes. Big snakes."
"Yes, but I've been told that you have something to do with
this. You've disrupted an entire school day for something so senile
as bringing your oversized pets to school!"
I nearly yelled at her-telling her how wrong she was, but
something stopped me. A sudden protective instinct specifically for
Freddy filled me and I told her, "They were not my pets! They just
got into the school! I used to have snakes and I knew how to calm
them down. I just wanted to make sure that every-"
"What dealings does this have to do with Freddy Kruger?"
The big lady snarled the name.
My face paled. "Wh-who?" I tried to plead.
"You know who! Don't lie to me. I've heard things of your
involvement with Kruger. The singing, the stories. Allison
Johnson has made it very clear. You're ignoring your medication
and allowing a maniac into your mind! Come with me!"
I glared. "NO! I'm not doing anything wrong! Leave me the
hell alone!"
"You are endangering yourself and your fellow community
by allowing this to happen! It will not be tolerated!" She snapped.
And then she heard it-the venemous hissing and spitting of
two very large snakes. The principal slowly turned around to stare
into the beady eyes of Ely and Evy. I growled and jumped in front
of her. "I told you to go home, Ely and Evy! GET! And tell him I'll
be fine on my own!" I demanded. They sunk back, as if ashamed
and slithered away. "Damn reptilians!" I mumbled and turned
back to the nagging principal. I sighed and uttered. "I will suffer
the unfair consequences of my harmless deeds. If despotic sanction
is what I must endure, then suffer it I shall."
The woman looked at me stunned, as if I had struck upon her
a curse of unbreakable quality. I guessed that she hadn't expected
me to know such big words. "Once again you throw upon me a
prejudice that I accomodate to each day that I reside here. Don't
underestimate me, Principal. I am much more capable than you
mongrels tend to think, excepting a few." I walked to her side and
offered her a glare that shot only from my eyes. She nearly
stumbled onto the floor in defeat. "You- You are free to go home,
Miss Hennings!" She stuttered.
I smiled and left the building, once again getting my way.
** ** ** ** **
I was in the boiler room-still brimming red-and staring at
Freddy Kruger impatiently. He was grinning oddly as if he'd
done something special. And then I thought that perhaps he had,
for I had fell to his requests and returned to him. I sighed and
threw up my hands in defeat. "Alright! You win! I'm here! I'm
back!" I said to him.
He came to stand with his face only inches from my own.
Smugly, he hissed. "I won."
I frowned and mumbled darkly, "Fuck you."
He cracked a huge grin and backed away to dance in a happy
circle. He reminded me vaguely of a penguin attempting to fly.
"Why did you stop coming to me anyway?" He asked when he was
done.
"Because I wanted a life outside of dreams I guess."
"Pfft. *Yawn.* How very dull of you, Lenne."
I scowled. "Why did you want me back?"
He fell onto the couch and asked like I was stupid. "Why do
people usually want other people to return to their sides?"
I smiled, halfheartedly and flopped down on the couch beside
him. "Awwww. You missed me, Fweddy!" I hugged him. He
nearly jumped out of my friendly embrace. I pulled away and
snickered. "Fweddy has a heart! Fweddy has a heart!" I sung. He
frowned at my teasing.
"You left me again for a boy!" He said, not denying my
provoking manner. I frowned, ignoring his comment. "Freddy,
you're not denying having a heart?"
"Denying? No. I do have a heart! It's just particularly black
and twisted. Why else would I be such a nasty handsome being!?
Now, why do you keep leaving me for other people?"
I sighed. "I didn't leave you for other people. I left you for
myself. You are annoying and distracting. You sent snakes to find
me!"
"BULL! You left me for Leo! And then Jack! I swear I'll kill
them all! Hah! Hah! Hah! Ha-"
I punched his arm. "Stop it." I ordered. "At least I'm back.
Now just leave it be."
He looked very unhappily at me for that response. "Then
you're not denying it?" He growled, unhappily.
"No. I like them both." I retorted. "What girl wouldn't."
Freddy twitched, stood, and disappeared into a cloud of
black smoke. I looked up and saw him on the floor above. He was
looking down on me, thinking about something important,
apparently. He seemed very upset now. I snorted. His "drama
Queen" personality was revealing itself once again. He leaned on
the railing and I detected something very sad and hurt in his
posture. Oh hell, I thought quickly. He's going to whine now and
make me feel bad. "You like them better than me." Freddy stated.
I felt my shoulders slump. Stand your ground Lenne! Don't
let him make you feel bad! I mentally shouted. "Yes. We have
more of an eye to eye thing Freddy. With Leo and Jack it's more
personal." I jumped when he popped up beside me and gave me a
straight face. He sat back down and his magical glove appeared.
He began poking me. Poke. Poke. Poke. Poke. Of course he
couldn't touch me, but it was still rather annoying.
"Stop. It. Now. Freddy." I warned. "What are you doing
anyway? You know that won't work." Poke. Poke. Poke. Poke.
He looked downfallen as he continued trying to hurt me. "I want to
know how to kill you." He whispered. "You make me feel stupid.
I don't like feeling stupid." Poke. Poke. Poke. "I think that if I get
rid of you, then all my problems will go away."
"Freddy..." I pleaded, "...Don't do this to me. It only makes
things worse." I stood up and walked away, turning a halfhearted
glare in his direction. I hopped a foot in the air when I realized
that he had followed me and was standing not a foot away. And
he began again...Poke. Poke. Poke. I rolled my eyes helplessly.
Freddy looked meaningfully at me like he had an idea. He
pulled me into a tight hug. I blushed and tried to squirm away.
"HEY! Let me go!" I demanded and felt a familiar tingling in my
shoulder. I glared then. He was trying to stab me in the back
now...literally! Poke. Poke. Poke. "LET GO!" I shook out of his
grasp, blushing crimson. I gulped, not used to his unusual male
attention, I felt the first bit of fear crawling up my spine.
Realization crossed his face and Freddy went to poke me
again. I squeaked when his knife made contact with my skin and
blood trickled down my arm. My eyes became as wide as saucer's
and my only thougths, I spoke aloud. "Y-You hurt me...." I
whispered. "I can't believe you would...." His expression stopped
my accusations. Freddy was looking dumbly at the blood on his
blade, as if something was wrong.
His eyes snapped to me again and then back down. And up
and down. And up and....he snapped his fingers. I woke up in my
bed and looked at my arm. A single letter was carved into my
shoulder...."F". I sat up and cried.
* * * * * * * *
Freddy was still standing in the boiler room looking lost and
annoyed. He didn't understand it. Why wasn't it working. He
had thought that after he'd found a way to hurt her, that he'd love
killing her and seeing her blood and then.....it didn't happen. He
was astounded. Usually, the blood of his victims was enough to
get his adrenaline pumping and his leading his mind. It
hadn't worked.
Lenne had obviously been afraid of....something....but he'd
taken advantage of the moment without thinking. And why
should he think? Freddy thought, angrily. He should've killed her
then. After that, everything would have been fine! He'd be back to
normal and wanting to kill again! Instead his mind wandered
uselessly. What had she been afraid of? He'd hugged her, so what
of it? She hugged him all the time. Perhaps now things were
different....No. "Face it, Freddy, you've become horribly needy."
He told himself, shrugging.
* * * *
I sniffled. "MOMMA! I FEEL TERRIBLE!" I exclaimed as
high as my fake scratchy voice would permit. I was at the shcool
nurse. It was second period-and well, my story wasn't entirely a
lie. Jack was there with me. His concern was kind and all, but I
really did want to just go kill Freddy. I moaned into the phone as
my Mother rejected my illness. "You'll be fine. I know your not
sick. You're never sick, hon. I'll see ya at home tonight. Love ya."
I sighed and slammed down the phone. The nurse gave me a
startled glance. And then I lowered my horrible gaze on her. "She
said to let me stay in here today. I need my rest. Got it?" I hissed.
The young nurse nodded and I turned to Jack. "I'll be okay now." I
told him, smiling a little. "I just have to...um."
"See Freddy? Yeah, I guessed that's what it was." Jack said
grinning. "What did he do to you to piss you off this much?"
I bowed my head and rolled up my sleeve. He gasped.
"That's horrible! Why-"
"No. The question is how. He usually couldn't hurt me when
he tried. For some reason this time it worked."
"Then you were scared of something, right? What freaked
you out so much?" Jack asked. I heard the concern in his voice for
me and frowned. "Him." I said honestly.
"Huh? I thought he didn't bother you?"
I blushed and looked away. "Well....when I get excited I hug
people. You know....a friendly hug?" Jack nodded, understanding.
I continued. "I never really expected Freddy to return that....it was
wierd, but he did. It wasn't what I would've ever expected."
Jack smirked and then really understood. "Ohhhhhhhh." He
cooed, "I think somebody's got a thing for my Uncle....heehee."
I twitched at his teasing. Anger bubbled just slightly.
"Freddy and Lenne! Freddy and Le-Oww!" He yelled as my
foot collided with his rib cage. Eyes burning, I told him, "N. O.
Don't you ever say that again, Jack. Or I'll send Freddy to devour
you're soul. And even if he can hurt me, he'll still obey me!" I fell
down onto the bed in the nurses office and grimaced. It was very
uncomfortable. I got no pillow and had to sleep on crackly thin
white paper. "Go away." I uttered.
Jack sighed. "Fine. Fine. I was just kidding, y'know? Tell
my Uncle hi for me. Bye." He left the office and I caught the nurse
sneaking a peak at his behind. I snorted and rolled over. I closed
my eyes and was instantly asleep.
Freddy was sprawled across the couch concentrating quite
hard on the dagger he had cut me with. I frowned. It was still wet
with my blood. "What do you want, Lenne?" He growled. "I'm
busy."
I crossed my arms. "Oh. Yes. I can definitely see that!" I
snapped. "I'm ticked, Freddy, and you know why! What are you
doing anyway?"
"Looking."
I raised a brow. "What?"
"Your blood is so....not fun." He remarked, squinching his
face up in confusion. "I don't like it."
"Yes, well I don't like it either." I retorted childishly.
"Anything else you'd like to say to me."
"Nope." He layed his hand beside him and stared
expressionlessly upwards. "Why did you get scared?"
I staggered. "Um...instinctive impulse?" Like he would
believe that! And he didn't. "But why? You're not afraid of me."
"I'm not afraid of you. No. But I'm afraid of...."
"Yes?" He insisted. "What is it?"
"Being touched."
He snorted. "Liar."
"That's the only way I can think to explain it." I stated
honestly.
"So if Leo hugged you..."
"I'd flip and kick him in the balls."
"Jack."
"Same as with you."
"Your Mother?"
"I'd be fine." I answered, not sure where this was going.
Freddy sat up then and put his elbows on his knees and his head
on his hands. "Sit by me." He commanded. I came and sat by
him.
"This doesn't bug you?" He asked. I responded. "No."
"Don't freak out, alright?" he asked.
I nodded, feeling my insides twist at wondering what he was
going to do. Freddy leaned over and hugged me gently. I
shivered, nervously. "This?"
"Yes. I hate it!" I said, squirming out of his grasp. I gave him
a frightened glare as I pulled away. "Don't do that!"
Freddy frowned, thinking. "Why not?" he asked. "I could do
worse, ya know."
"Can we talk about something else?" I whispered.
"You've met my nephew. Do you like him?" Freddy quizzed.
I relaxed slightly. "Yes. Jack's very sweet. A much better
friend than Leo."
"His father finally broke down and told Leo the truth about
his Mother." Freddy remarked, calmly.
"Oh! How'd it turn out?" I demanded, excitedly.
"Good. Leo forgave him and his Father bought Leo a new
car. Woop-de-doo! How boring..."
I punched his shoulder. "Not boring! It's a good thing! I
need to congratulate Leo!" I laughed, happily. "I wonder if he'll
tell me what kind of car it was?" I didn't see Freddy's slight frown
at my glee, or hear his annoyed sighing.
"The nurse is coming to wake you up." He told me. I stood
and walked away from him, waiting for my awakening. Freddy
came up and wrapped his arms around my waist from behind. I
froze in shock. "F..Freddy?" I gasped.
He whispered in my ear, "Better get used to it, Lenne. I'm
going to start doing this more often." I blinked once and found the
nurse shaking me awake in her office. I lurched off of the bed and
dashed out of her office and down the hall of the eighth building. I
ran around a corner and stopped, just to slowly back back around
it. It must've been lunch time by now and Leo and Allison were
having a private arguement behind an unused building.
I couldn't really hear what they were saying, but I knew it
ended with Leo getting slapped by Allison and him yelling
something at her. When she had ran away in tears, I chose to
approach. Leo saw me and was obviously surprised. "Lenne....are
you okay?"
I grinned softly. "I am. You?"
He smiled. "Yeah." And then he walked over to me and
pulled me into a hug that was more than friendly. Once again, I
froze. "I'm sorry, Lenne." He said. "I never really liked Allison,
but....I think that I'm in love with you."
I felt my shoulders sag and a weight dropped into my
stomach. "No!" I hissed through clenched teeth. "No! No! NO!" I
yanked away from him. He looked hurt. "Not you too!" I yelled.
"I can't deal with you both, right now!" Tears slid down my cheeks
and I tried to viciously wipe them away.
"Lenne, what's-" his eyes widened. He skin turned white
and he was suddenly paralized with obvious fear. I turned around
and stared into the eyes of fear. Freddy raised a gloved hand and
placed it protectively on my shoulder. I turned to gaze at Leo, who
seemed not to be able to move. "Kruger..." he whispered,
spitefully. "You really did kill my Mother! Dad told me the truth!
You did!"
I glared at Leo. "He didn't! That's nonsense! Freddy you
told me-" I stopped and frowned, suddenly confused. "What
happened? Really?"
"His father told him that I killed his Mother. Leo threatened
him and said he didn't believe that when his Dad offered him a
car."
"It's a pawn." I suddenly saw Leo's grinning face. "Well, it
got me what I wanted." He shrugged with a superior motive. "All
I had to do was blame Kruger."
"Asshole!" I screamed.
Leo sighed. "Love, I thought you might say that. But if you
don't come with me and get away from-" he glared, "That thing,
then I'm going to tell the authorities the truth! Your mother will
have to leave Springfield and they'll want to use you to catch
Freddy. So, what do you say?"
I scowled and took a step back into Freddy's grasp. He
wrapped his other arm around my shoulders. "I say, go to hell." I
hissed, defensively. "I'll never let you get to me! Or to him!"
Leo grimaced. "You would chose a murdering loony over
me!?"
Freddy chuckled lightly. "Of course she would. She's mine,
as I told you before."
Leo looked disgusted. "Y-yours?" he questioned.
I frowned, suddenly getting that irking feeling in my gut.
"Freddy..." I whispered, uncertainly. "I..." I snapped my lips
together as Leo took a step back. And then I realized what must be
happening. I had no choice this time. Freddy was shivering with
anticipation, but he would listen to what I said. "Let go for a sec." I
told him. He did.
Backing away, I stared at Leo and then back at Freddy, who
waited for my word. Leo acknowledged what was happening and
begged me. "Don't let him kill me, Lenne! I love you! He deserves
to die! I want-"
"HUSH." I snapped, glaring aimlessly at him. "You've been
nothing but an ass to me and Freddy." I sighed and looked at the
ground, knowing what I must do. I walked over to Freddy and
whispered something in his ear. He grinned lightly and snapped
his fingers. I fainted instantly.
